Bloons Monkey City (often abbreviated BMC and occasionally Monkey City) is a title shared by two games: the Flash version of Bloons Monkey City, a 2013 browser game developed by Ninja Kiwi that is based on the Flash version of Bloons TD 5, and the mobile version of Bloons Monkey City, a 2014 mobile game developed by Ninja Kiwi Europe that is based on the mobile version of Bloons TD 5. The gameplay of these games is a hybrid between city-building and tower defense: players build their city by constructing buildings and expand it by capturing tiles, which is done by playing a tower defense mini-game that is heavily based on Bloons TD 5. Buildings are used to unlock more towers and upgrades to use in the tower defense gameplay.

Buildings
Buildings are the main system to unlock towers and upgrades for use during the tower defense gameplay. Most buildings are purchased with City Cash, take a certain amount of real-world time to build, and reward experience once construction is complete. They can have conditions such as requiring a certain City Level or only being buildable on certain kinds of terrain. They are divided into multiple categories:
- Monkey Buildings
Bloons Monkey City (multiplatform) (a.k.a. Base Buildings
Bloons Monkey City (Flash)) unlock or increase the population of towers, allowing more of them to be used per game. - Upgrade Buildings allow upgrades to be unlocked through research.
- Special Buildings enable certain upgrades to be researched.
- MvM Buildings unlock or improve certain functions of the player's Monkey v Monkey attacks.
- Resource Buildings generate resources for the City. They can be upgraded to be more efficient.
- Premium Buildings
Bloons Monkey City (Flash) are purely decorative buildings purchased with NK Coins instead of City Cash. - Decorations
Bloons Monkey City (multiplatform) are similar to Premium Buildings, but allow for more customization and come in different types. Some are purchased with City Cash, others are only obtainable through events or in-app purchases.

Tower defense
The tower defense gameplay is based heavily on Bloons TD 5, sharing most of the same towers, upgrades, Activated Abilities, Bloons, and game mechanics, with some balance changes to towers. Unlike in BTD5, rounds are randomly generated based on the difficulty.
Monkey Knowledge
Monkey Knowledge is a system that unlocks permanent enhancements for towers and general gameplay. Monkey Knowledge is progressed by opening Monkey Knowledge Packs that contain XP for random Monkey Knowledge categories. Knowledge Packs can also contain other rewards such as City Cash, Bloonstones, and more Knowledge Packs.
