CHIMPS is significantly more difficult than most other game modes, especially when going for a black border for a map without guides. Avoid placing down too many low-tier towers in the early-game and mid-game that do not become relevant in the late-game. Instead, focus on a few strong towers with support as well. The hero is extremely important during CHIMPS, providing many attacking and supporting capabilities that centralize a defense around, making it important to place the Hero early to scale power and maximize value. Take advantage of support towers such as Berserker Brew and MOAB Glue to support a defense for relatively low cost. Avoid towers that have little or no purpose without the functionalities of generating cash and/or lives, such as Monkey Town and Benjamin, but don't ignore those that still are functional without them, such as Elite Sniper and Support Chinook.

Some beginner-friendly examples of strategies are Gwendolin paired with The Tack Zone and Inferno Ring, Obyn Greenfoot with Avatar of Wrath, and Striker Jones with MOAB Assassin spam. Besides Heroes, it's important to understand monkey synergies, like pairing a Berserker Brew Alchemist with relatively high attack speed towers with many projectiles such as Bloonjitsu Ninja or Armor Piercing Darts Sub.

Earning the red CHIMPS badge is not too difficult, and sometimes is easier than Impoppable because there's less worry about accidental leaking due to Retry Last Round giving second chances for free. The real challenge is completing without Retry Last Round; always pre-plan a consistently working strategy for all stages of the game, especially on harder maps.
