In the mobile version, having Snap Freeze makes it extremely effective at wiping out rushes every time it attacks, with other towers like Bloonjitsu added for backup; Ice Shards is one of the most cost-efficient group-poppers in the entire game. However, since it can't proc shards on White and Zebras, the sharding can sometimes be unreliable if there's not enough Bloons entering it. Additionally, it becomes laggy if it hits way too many Bloons at once, which can cause game crashes when playing on Contested Territory.

Ice Shards is the Ice Monkey's path 2 tier 3 upgrade in Bloons Monkey City. It adds a status effect to Bloons it freezes that soaks through 3 layers (including White and Zebra Bloons) which triggers 5 shards of ice when popping affected Bloons (including with Snap Freeze damage). The status effect lasts 0.57 seconds shorter than the freeze. The shards deal 1 damage with 1 pierce, 72° apart. The shards have the piercing damage type, which does not pop Frozen nor Lead bloons (Fire on the Flash version which does not pop Lead bloons). Pierce buffs from Monkey Knowledge also increase the pierce of each shard.

Strategy

[edit | edit source]

In both versions, Ice Shards is a potent method of dealing a lot of collateral damage, despite its slow attack speed, having infinite freezing pierce combined with its shards. This makes ice shards a solid cleanup tower when paired with Bloon stalling such as Bloon Impact or Glue Hose (but not Arctic Wind as it disables the shard attack) in order to clump Bloons up, keep them within range of the Ice Monkey and additionally trigger the shards themselves. It can often be the sole damaging cleanup tower of mass Ceramic and Rainbow children if a defense is otherwise too heavy on MOAB-Class damage, such as when spamming MOAB Maulers or Bloonjitsus.

Take caution on low end devices, it can become laggy if it hits way too many Bloons at once, which can cause game crashes when playing on Contested Territory.
