The {{mobile version of|Bloons TD 5}} is a reissue of the Flash original for iOS, iPadOS, Android, and Windows Phone, and later ported to Windows and macOS to replace ''Deluxe''. It is a from-the-ground-up remake in a new engine with completely redone graphics. In addition to introducing several new features, it incorporates some elements from ''Deluxe'', such as the Monkey Engineer and Bloonchipper. Because it runs in a different engine, there are several differences in game mechanics, such as how [[pierce]] interacts with exploding [[projectile]]s. The mobile version has almost all of the same content as the Flash version, but there are a few tracks exclusive to the Flash version.

Logo introduced in the mobile version and later used for the Flash version and console version
Versions

Bloons TD 5 (also known as Bloons Tower Defense 5, Bloons TD5, and BTD5) is a title shared by the Flash version of Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD 5 Deluxe, the mobile version of Bloons TD 5 (later ported to Windows and macOS), and the console version of Bloons TD 5. These games share mostly the same gameplay, but with different towers, tracks, modes, and other features. It is the successor to Bloons TD 4, introducing an expanded and revised upgrade system, Activated Abilities, Special Agents, Specialty Buildings, and co-operative multiplayer. It is the basis of Bloons TD Battles and Bloons Monkey City, which share mostly the same towers, upgrades, Bloons, and core game mechanics; they are sometimes unofficially referred to as the "Bloons TD 5 generation" collectively.

Gameplay

[edit | edit source]
Further information: Bloons TD (series)#Gameplay

Activated Abilities

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Activated Ability

Activated Abilities are effects that can be triggered by the player. Every main tower except the Banana Farm has an Activated Ability unlocked from their path 2 tier 4 upgrade. Activated Abilities tend to have powerful effects, but have a cooldown period after each use.

Special Agents

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Special Agent

Special Agents are items that are purchased with Monkey Money instead of in-game cash. Most Special Agents are towers, but unlike most other towers, they include non-monkey animals such as turtles and squirrels. They have a wide range of functions, including providing offensive coverage in the early-game and changing the terrain to allow water towers to be placed on land and vice versa. Special Agents can be permanently upgraded into Special Agent Pros by using them a certain number of times.

Specialty Buildings

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Specialty Building

Specialty Buildings are a mechanic that provides discounts for a specific tower and its upgrades, at the cost of increasing the cost and upgrade costs of another tower (usually one with a similar theme or function). Every tower except the Banana Farm and Monkey Village has a corresponding Specialty Building, and they can be upgraded to apply additional perks that are unique to each tower, such as the Dart Training Facility, which gives the player free Dart Monkeys every 10 rounds, and the Mage Spire, which gives the Monkey Apprentice an additional attack. Specialty Buildings are purchased and upgraded with Monkey Money, and only one Specialty Building can be enabled at a time.

Differences between versions

[edit | edit source]

Flash version and Deluxe

[edit | edit source]

Bloons TD 5 Deluxe is a paid "premium" port of the Flash version for Windows and macOS that adds the Monkey Engineer and Bloonchipper, new tracks, new Special Agents, and new Special Missions, allows Premium Upgrades to be purchased with Monkey Money instead of NK Coins, and removes all online features, including Co-op, online leaderboards, and Daily Challenges (replaced with Random Challenges). Because the Flash version continued to receive updates for many years after Deluxe was discontinued in 2014, the Flash version received a good deal of content and changes that were not incorporated into Deluxe, including the Monkey Sub, daily quests, a number of tracks, and balance changes.

Flash version and mobile version

[edit | edit source]

The mobile version of Bloons TD 5 is a game for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, and later ported to Windows and macOS (replacing Deluxe after it was discontinued) developed by Ninja Kiwi Europe. It is a from-the-ground-up remake in a new engine with completely redone graphics. This version introduces several features, such as the Monkey Lab and Impoppable mode, and incorporates some elements from Deluxe, such as the Monkey Engineer and Bloonchipper. This version includes almost all of the content in the Flash version, except for a few tracks. There are several gameplay differences between this version and the Flash version, such as Intermediate and Advanced tracks now requiring the player to win on other tracks to unlock them and Specialty Buildings having four tiers instead of three.

Mobile version and console version

[edit | edit source]

The console version of Bloons TD 5 is a port of the mobile version for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, and is playable on other consoles through backwards compatibility. It features both local and online Co-op and wider tracks, but omits most of the events and lacks content added to the mobile version since release.

Nomenclature

[edit | edit source]

Bloons TD 5 is short for Bloons Tower Defense 5. The full name is used on Ninja Kiwi's website and the right-click context menu of the Flash version, but is not used within the text of any version. The name is also sometimes formatted as Bloons TD5, though its usage is inconsistent. For example, it is parsed Bloons TD 5 on the Steam store page, but the name of the application itself is Bloons TD5.

The Flash version is sometimes referred to as Bloons TD5 web,[1] Bloons TD 5 web,[2] or the "web version". The term "Flash version" is used in the Ninja Kiwi Archive, including its website and Steam descriptions.[3][4]

The iOS, Android, and Steam releases are collectively referred to as Bloons Tower Defense 5 Mobile.[5] The Steam release is presumably included due to it being based on the iOS and Android versions, and it uses the same version numbering, but it is also referred to as Bloons TD 5 Steam specifically.[6]
