Strategy

Bigger Stacks provides a significant pierce gain, allowing each spike pile to pop more Bloons. Its lead-popping successor, White Hot Spikes, allows dealing with DDTs without support, which should be bought for higher-tier upgrades. For most tiers, Bigger Stacks essentially gains (ignoring external buffs such as One More Spike One More Spike) a +100% pierce bonus for tanking bloons.

For lower-tier upgrades, this is an efficient crosspath for its cost, particularly for 1-0-2, which synergizes well with Berserker Brew, to the point of being more efficient than an Alch-buffed Spiked Balls. Bigger Stacks remains a favorable crosspath for a stronger stockpile (+100%, instead of +66% with Even Faster Production) throughout the entire bottom path. MOAB SHREDR and above appreciate Bigger Stacks increase its direct DPS to MOAB-class bloons, which matters more for Spike Storm's ability which doesn't benefit much from Smart Spikes.

Although Perma-Spike only gains +70% pierce from this crosspath, it's still more efficient at generating spikes than the 0-2-5's +66% attack speed, but almost equal when basic external pierce buffs (e.g. Abyssal Warrior and Berserker Brew) are involved (requires +3 flat pierce to equal). Likewise, Carpet of Spikes still usually favors this crosspath despite only gaining +50% pierce, as the 0-5-1's lifespan and 0-5-2's lane-switching are niche, and 1-5-0 has more effective synergy with Lord of the Abyss's percentage pierce buffs.

1-0-5
  • Buff Pierce increased ― 60 → 70
We quite liked how the lifespan changes for xx1 spikes went previously, though this still wasn’t enough to make the path competitive and increasing this number further wouldn’t have much of an impact since most earlier rounds aren’t long enough. Spiked Balls strats have also felt too strong compared to higher tiers on top path, so touching on all of these issues slightly the base lifespan of spikes has been reduced [...]
— Update notes
  • Nerf Upgrade cost increased ― $600 → $800
  • Nerf Base projectile lifespan reduced ― 70s → 50s
    • Note: Long Reach lifespan remains at 100s
Like a few other towers before it, the attack speed crosspath for Spike Factory has outshined the others. We have reworked the lower Spike Factory tiers to distribute this power more evenly while keeping high tier factories at a similar level of power.
— Update notes
  • Nerf Overall cost increased by $200 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  • Buff Base spike factory rate increased ― 2.2s → 1.75s
1-1-0
  • Nerf Rate reduced ― 1.32s → 1.4s
1-2-0
  • Buff Rate increased ― 0.99s → 0.98s
In addition, Permaspike’s neglected crosspath has had a small pierce increase as currently their only real use is under custom challenge rules.
— Update notes
1-0-5
  • Buff Pierce increased ― 70 → 80
Some minor changes to a few upgrades on Spike Factory evening out some aspects of it.
— Update notes
1-0-5
  • Buff Pierce increased ― 80 → 90
1-0-5
  • Nerf Spike per spike pile reduced ― 90 → 45
1-0-5
  • Buff Pierce increased ― 45 → 90
  • Nerf Spike Factory no longer can shotgun spikes for exactly one frame after spawning (bug fix)
Permaspike is seeing a small crosspath fix, as the x2x rate change threw this balance out.
— Update notes
1-0-5
  • Nerf Pierce reduced ― 90 → 85
