Homeland Defense is one of the strongest support towers in the game, as it gives all monkeys (excluding Paragons) on the map to receive a substantial boost in DPS that they wouldn't have otherwise, making it essential in freeplay. Its overall uptime is a little less than 50%, so adding a second village with [[Call to Arms (BTD6)|Call to Arms]] can be activated during this downtime, with three villages needed to have complete uptime coverage (or just two with [[Energizer (BTD6)|Energizer]]). Alternatively, selling the Homeland Defense will keep its buff on other towers, so one can sell and re-buy Homeland Defense as a more expensive means of keeping the buff, but this is not recommended unless the player has lots of cash they don't need. To maintain full Homeland uptime, one strategy is to buy another Call to Arms, activate and sell the Homeland, and then upgrade it to Homeland and repeat the sell-and-rebuy with Call to Arms.

Other than freeplay and Boss Events/Boss Rush which don't involve Lych, it is usually too expensive (mainly in CHIMPS) or a bit overkill (in other game modes). A Call to Arms is sufficient enough elsewhere.

There is no optimal crosspath for Homeland Defense, as it comes down to defense layout and personal preference. 2-5-0 is useful to buff towers in range with Jungle Drums, but if other villages with that upgrade are nearby it is not required.
