Road Items are a gameplay element of the Bloons TD series, officially present from Bloons Tower Defense 2 to Bloons Monkey City with the exception of Bloons TD Battles. While present in the Tower selection menu, road items are not towers, instead being directly placed on the path of a map to affect Bloons. They are still usually purchased with cash.

Throughout the series, there have generally been three "main" selections of road item:

  • Road Spikes, which pop Bloons before expiring.
  • Exploding Pineapples, which deal explosive damage after a 3-second delay.
  • Monkey Glue, which slows down Bloons floating over it before expiring.

While road items aren't their own category in Bloons TD Battles or Bloons TD 6, the concept remains through select Powers in 6 and the mobile version of Battles or items present in Geraldo's Shop from 6 derived from the item archetypes.

Road Spikes

Road Spikes were introduced in Bloons Tower Defense 2. They are depicted as a pile of black tacks which expire after either popping 10 Bloon layers or if a round ends.

Starting from Bloons TD 4, Road Spikes have been the projectile for the Spike Factory tower. In Bloons Monkey City, the Spike Shack Building grants the player 5 piles per Shack. In Bloons TD 6, standard Road Spikes have largely been supplanted by the similarly-named Road Spikes Power and the Stack of Old Nails Shop item.

Red Hot Spikes

Red Hot Spikes are a recurring variant of Road Spikes, which function largely similarly but have the ability to pop all Bloon types and do not expire until popping a usually larger amount of Bloons. They are not often present as a proper road item, instead being present solely as a Power or, in Bloons Monkey City, a Bloonstone purchase during battle.

Similarly to Road Spikes, Spike Factories have had access to a Red Hot Spike projectile upgrade since Bloons TD 4. They were introduced as their own item in the mobile version of Bloons TD Battles.

Monkey Glue

Icon in Bloons TD 4

Monkey Glue was introduced in Bloons Tower Defense 2, but was absent from Bloons TD 5 before returning as a Power in the mobile version of Bloons TD Battles. It is a blob of yellow glue that expires after coating up to 20 Bloons or the round ending.

The Glue Gunner introduced in Bloons TD 4 doesn't place piles of Monkey Glue, but it gives the same slowing and visual effects. The Glue Trap Power and the Tube of Amaz-o-Glue Shop item replace the Monkey Glue in function in Bloons TD 6.

Exploding Pineapples

Icon in Bloons TD 4

Exploding Pineapples (or just Pineapples) were introduced in Bloons Tower Defense 3. They are, as the name indicates, completely normal pineapples that proceed to display a red countdown before exploding in a small area after three seconds, as pineapples usually do.

Starting from Bloons TD 4, the ability to drop Explosive Pineapples has been an upgrade for the Monkey Ace tower. In fact, this upgrade is the only appearance the Pineapple has made in the Bloons TD 6 generation aside from being equipable as an Uncommon Weapon in Bloons Adventure Time TD. In Bloons Monkey City, the Pineapple Stand grants the player 5 pineapples per Stand.
