The Phayze Bloon is a type of Bloon Mod in Bloons TD Battles 2 introduced in version 4.9. It adds a shield to the Bloon that has health equal to 1% of the base Bloon's health (with a minimum of 1 health). If an attack destroys the shield, excess damage does not soak through the shield. Upon being destroyed, the Bloon pauses and becomes invincible for a few frames, then quickly moves forward by 10% of the length of the track, then loses its invincibility. Like Shielded Bloons, the shield is permanently lost when it is destroyed. Natural Phayze Bloons start appearing on round 21.[1]

Phayze Bloons are expensive to send for just soaking overkill damage and headstarting, and are mainly beneficial in choke rushes. By preventing Bloons from damaging through the Phayze layer, Phayze Bloons can skip past a defense that lacks pierce and consistent attacks, requiring more space to fully pop them in a tight area. However, with towers that already have high attack speed and range across the entire map, Phayze Bloons become no better than just getting a minor headstart, which is not worth it compared to greater amounts of non-Phayze Bloons. Buying Phayze properties limits the capability to layer rushes, due to the extra costs.

Some notable defenses weak to Phayze Bloons include:

  • Ring of Fire + Blade Shooter: Weak to Phayze Purples when not covering multiple regions.
  • Backend Spike Factories, mainly Spiked Mines and bottom Spike Factory (especially Smart Spikes and above): No longer feasible to set targeting other than Normal, and Phayze Bloons can skip right past a stockpile.
  • Ground Zero: Instead, use Spectre against tight Phayze Bloons.

Phayze Bloons aren't effective against defenses that already have good range and attack quickly. Notable counters to Phayze Bloons include:

  • Super Monkey: Rarely has a range problem, and all upgrades have quick attacks that don't care about the shield's overkill. Most players don't use Super Monkey for the midgame regardless, only from round 17 onwards. Sun Avatar are common for handling early Tight Leads and Tight Ceramics.
  • Dartling Gunner: All maps where Dartling is popular have enough space to reach the beginning, and all of them attack fairly quickly. Hydra Rocket Pods is a common midgame upgrade for Dartling, reliably penetrating rushes of Bloons.
  • Sniper Monkey: Bottom path already attacks quickly, all Snipers have infinite range, and there's no reason to use other upgrade paths for MOAB-class damage. It's already practically useless against tight rushes regardless.
