Introduced Version 44.0

The Mermonkey is a Magic tower in Bloons TD 6, introduced in version 44.0. It attacks by throwing tridents that create damaging splashes around each Bloon they hit, similar to Hydra Rocket Pods and Captain Churchill's explosives. Each trident can create two splashes by default. Each trident has a very brief (0.05s) cooldown between activating a splash on a new target. The Mermonkey can be placed on both land and water, but has 35% more range if placed in water.

It can be upgraded to awaken an abyssal creature, fire freezing water attacks, or sing magical songs which heavily impede the bloons.

Upgrades

[edit | edit source]

Path 1

1
Trident Efficiency
Acclimation to local water density allows Mermonkey to attack faster with all attacks.
Costs:
160 XP to unlock
$125 (Easy)
$150 (Medium)
$160 (Hard)
$180 (Impoppable)

This upgrade reduces the attack cooldown of the Mermonkey's trident attack by 20%, effectively increasing its attack speed by 25%. Crosspathing with Alluring Melody and above reduces the delay of the trance attack pulling in Bloons by 10% (effectively +11.11% pull rate), but does not affect its attack cooldown.

2
Trident Swiftness
Tridents are thrown faster and travel further.
Costs:
580 XP to unlock
$210 (Easy)
$250 (Medium)
$270 (Hard)
$300 (Impoppable)

This upgrade reduces the cooldown of the trident attack by a further 25% (effectively +33.33% attack speed), for a total of 40% reduced cooldown (effectively +66.67% attack speed) relative to the base tower, due to it stacking on top of Trident Efficiency. It also increases the projectile speed of its tridents by 50%, but reduces their lifespan, so the maximum distance they can travel before expiring is effectively the same. Contrary to its description, this upgrade affects other attacks when crosspathed, not just the trident attack:

  • With Alluring Melody and above, it reduces the delay of the trance attack pulling in Bloons while active by 10%, for a total of -21% in combination with Trident Efficiency (effectively +23.46% pull rate overall).
  • With Riptide Champion and above, it increases the rate that its projectiles gain size and damage at by 50%, to compensate for their reduced lifespan. For Popseidon, it only affects the side tridents in this way.
  • With Arctic Knight and above, it also increases the projectile speed of Ice Jet's ice balls by 50%, without reducing their lifespan.
3
Abyss Dweller
The Abyssal Creature awakens, angrily lashing out at Bloons with powerful tentacles and granting nearby Monkeys a small pierce increase.
Costs:
2,800 XP to unlock
$1,530 (Easy)
$1,800 (Medium)
$1,945 (Hard)
$2,160 (Impoppable)

This upgrade grants the Mermonkey an Abyssal Creature that slaps nearby Bloons with its eight tentacles, dealing 8 Shatter-type damage with 15 pierce. Each tentacle is a separate attack with a 3-second attack cooldown, angled 45° apart from each other in a circle. Each tentacle can only target Bloons within a 45° cone in front of it, in addition to sharing the same range limit as the Mermonkey. Additionally, this upgrade increases the damage of the Mermonkey's trident splashes from 2 to 4, and it now grants a +10% pierce buff to all towers in its range (excluding itself and Paragons).

4
Abyssal Warrior
Coats tridents in a thick ink that slows bloons. Abyssal creature grows in power, destroying most Bloons with ease and enhancing nearby Monkeys with more pierce.
Costs:
11,000 XP to unlock
$3,570 (Easy)
$4,200 (Medium)
$4,535 (Hard)
$5,040 (Impoppable)

This upgrade allows the Mermonkey's trident splashes to coat Bloons they hit in ink, slowing all their layers for up to 10 seconds. It slows regular Bloons by 40% and MOABs and BFBs by 28%, but does not affect any other MOAB-Class Bloons, and does not affect Bloons that the splashes cannot deal damage to. This upgrade also imrpoves other aspects of the Mermonkey:

  • The Abyssal Creature's tentacles now deal 12 damage and +6 damage to Ceramic Bloons (enough to one-shot a non-Fortified non-Super Ceramic), have 25 pierce instead of 15 (still gaining +35% pierce with the Sharper Prongs crosspath), the slaps cover a 50% larger area, and their attack cooldown reduces from 3 seconds to 2.5 seconds (effectively increasing their attack speed by 20%).
  • The Mermonkey's trident splashes now deal 8 damage instead of 4.
  • The Mermonkey's buff to towers in range now increases their pierce by 20% instead of 10%.
5
Lord of the Abyss
The fully unleashed wrath of the Abyssal Creature brings the power of the depths to the surface, annihilating most Bloons, and greatly enhancing the pierce of nearby Monkeys.
Costs:
68,000 XP to unlock
$19,550 (Easy)
$23,000 (Medium)
$24,840 (Hard)
$27,600 (Impoppable)

This upgrade increases the Mermonkey's range from 28 units to 32 units and allows water-based towers to be placed on land within its 32-unit range (functioning like the opposite of Arctic Wind). This upgrade also improves other aspects of the Mermonkey:

  • The Abyssal Creature's tentacles now deal 32 damage (while still dealing +6 damage to Ceramic Bloons), have 50 pierce instead of 25 (still gaining +35% pierce with the Sharper Prongs crosspath), the slaps cover twice as large an area, and their attack cooldown reduces from 2.5 seconds to 1.5 seconds (effectively increasing their attack speed by ~66.7%).
  • The Mermonkey's tridents attack twice as fast and have 9 pierce instead of 2. Their splashes now deal 10 damage instead of 8, but have the same pierce as before.
  • The Mermonkey's buff to towers in range now increases their pierce by 40% instead of 20%.

Path 2

1
Sharper Prongs
Can pop more Bloons with each attack.
Costs:
150 XP to unlock
$170 (Easy)
$200 (Medium)
$215 (Hard)
$240 (Impoppable)

This upgrade increases the pierce of its tridents by 1 (from 2 to 3 with its base stats) and splashes by 3 (from 3 to 6 with its base stats).

Crosspathing with Abyss Dweller grants its tentacle attacks +35% pierce. Crosspathing with Alluring Melody grants its trance attack +2 pierce.

2
Tidal Chill
Icy tridents are larger and can freeze Bloons.
Costs:
700 XP to unlock
$190 (Easy)
$225 (Medium)
$245 (Hard)
$270 (Impoppable)

This upgrade increases the radius of the trident splashes by 50% and causes the splashes to freeze Bloons they hit. The freeze lasts for 4 Bloon layers or 0.5 seconds, only applies to Bloons the splashes can deal damage to, and does not apply to MOAB-Class Bloons at all.

3
Riptide Champion
Mermonkey draws energy from the sea. Tridents can pop Lead Bloons, grow in power as they travel, and crash with devastating force.
Costs:
2,500 XP to unlock
$1,700 (Easy)
$2,000 (Medium)
$2,160 (Hard)
$2,400 (Impoppable)

This upgrade replaces its original trident attack with a new trident attack that fires every 1.5 seconds instead of every 1.2 seconds (20% slower than before) and has 32 units of range instead of 28 units. Its tridents move slower and don't create splashes, but they now grow in size and damage as they travel, and they spawn two wavelet projectiles laterally at the end of their lifespans or upon colliding with a wall (they do not spawn by running out of pierce).

At base, both the tridents and the wavelets have 25 pierce, deal 4 Frigid-type damage and +2 damage to frozen Bloons, and freeze all layers of Bloons they deal damage to for up to 1 second (0.5 seconds for Ceramic Bloons). They pass through White Bloons and Zebra Bloons (but not Purple Bloons) instead of colliding with them unless buffed to be able to deal damage to them. Per second of travel time, the tridents gain 50% more damage (capped at 3× damage, though this is functionally impossible to reach without projectile lifespan buffs) and 10% more radius, while the wavelets lose 20% radius (but do not lose damage).

4
Arctic Knight
Tridents grow in power faster. Ice Jet ability: Launches a barrage of bouncing ice balls following target priority, or targeted point.
Costs:
16,000 XP to unlock
$6,800 (Easy)
$8,000 (Medium)
$8,640 (Hard)
$9,600 (Impoppable)

This upgrade unlocks the Ice Jet Activated Ability, which causes the Mermonkey to stop using its trident attack, instead rapidly firing ice balls straight ahead with a small degree of random spread, for 3 seconds. The ice balls deal 20 Frigid-type damage (which does not soak through layers) with 240 pierce, freeze up to 3 layers of non-MOAB-Class Bloons for 3 seconds, and can bounce off of walls. By default, the ability targets Bloons over infinite range according to the tower's current targeting option, but the player can also lock the attack in one direction like a Dartling Gunner by using its Monkey Special. It cooldown is 45 seconds.

This upgrade also improves the Mermonkey's trident attack. It increases the base damage of the tridents and wavelets from 4 to 8, and they now +4 damage to frozen Bloons and +8 damage to MOAB-Class Bloons. It also causes the tridents to grow in damage by 75% per second (112.5% with the Trident Swiftness crosspath) instead of 50%.

5
Popseidon
Popseidon's Ice Jet ability draws such power that a rogue wave floods the map with supercooled water, freezing all Bloons and reclaiming the weak for the sea.
Costs:
70,000 XP to unlock
$44,200 (Easy)
$52,000 (Medium)
$56,160 (Hard)
$62,400 (Impoppable)

This upgrade enhances its Activated Ability, increasing the damage its ice balls deal from 20 to 30 and allowing them to bounce off the edges of the map. It also causes the ability to summon a flood that deals 70 Frigid-type damage to all Bloons on-screen (including Camo Bloons, even if it lacks Camo detection) and slows all Bloons (even Bloons it cannot deal damage to) to 50% speed for 8 seconds.

Additionally, this upgrade increases the Mermonkey's range from 32 units to 40 units, doubles the attack speed of the trident attack, increases the base damage of the tridents and wavelets from 8 to 15, increases the damage they deal to frozen Bloons to +7.5 and to MOAB-Class Bloons to +15, and increases the rate they gain damage to 112.5% per second. With this upgrade, it also fires two more tridents each time it attacks, angled 45° to each side of the middle trident.

Path 3

1
Echosense Precision
Tridents can detect Camo bloons and tridents seek their target.
Costs:
150 XP to unlock
$170 (Easy)
$200 (Medium)
$215 (Hard)
$240 (Impoppable)

This upgrade grants all of the Mermonkey's attacks Camo detection and allows its tridents to home in on Bloons within 80 units from any direction.

Crosspathing with Trident Swiftness increases the tridents' rotation rate while seeking to compensate for their increased movement speed, while crosspathing with Riptide Champion reduces their rotation rate to counterbalance their reduced movement speed. With Arctic Knight, it also reduces the random spread angle of its Ice Jet ability from 30° to 10°, but with Popseidon, it no longer reduces the ability's spread, instead increasing the spread angle of its side tridents (not the wavelets) from 45° to 60°.

2
Echosense Network
Increases range for all Echosense Mermonkeys. Stacks up to 10 times.
Costs:
670 XP to unlock
$240 (Easy)
$280 (Medium)
$300 (Hard)
$335 (Impoppable)

This upgrade applies a buff to all Mermonkeys with this upgrade (including itself), or a further upgrade on the same path, that increases their range by 7.5%. This buff stacks additively for each Mermonkey with this upgrade up to 10 times, for a maximum of +75% range for all affected Mermonkeys.

3
Alluring Melody
Entrances non MOAB-Class Bloons with a hypnotic tune, magically detonating all damage over time effects, disrupting Bloon movement, and strips Camo.
Costs:
3,000 XP to unlock
$1,700 (Easy)
$2,000 (Medium)
$2,160 (Hard)
$2,400 (Impoppable)

This upgrade unlocks a new attack for the Mermonkey that pulls non-MOAB-Class Bloons into a trance. The attack creates an area of effect that causes Bloons that enter it to lose Camo properties, instantly take the total remaining damage of damage over time if they have any (capped at 50 damage each), and continuously circle around the tower anticlockwise. It lasts for 6 seconds, returning tranced Bloons to where they were before when it ends, and has a 12-second cooldown (effectively 50% uptime without buffs). It has 6 pierce (with Ceramic Bloons consuming 2 pierce), which determines how many Bloons it can entrance at a time. This upgrade also increases the pierce of the Mermonkey's trident splashes from 3 to 9.

4
Symphonic Resonance
Hypnotic tune can affect low tier MOAB-Class Bloons. Can be set to echo from a nearby point.
Costs:
14,500 XP to unlock
$6,460 (Easy)
$7,600 (Medium)
$8,210 (Hard)
$9,120 (Impoppable)

This upgrade increases the Mermonkey's range from 28 units to 32 units and enhances the trance attack. It now has 12 pierce instead of 6 (still gaining +2 pierce from the Sharper Prongs crosspath), no longer consumes +1 pierce from Ceramic Bloons, can deal up to 125 damage from detonating damage over time instead of 50, and can now pull MOABs and DDTs into its trance (with MOABs consuming +2 pierce and DDTs consuming +3). Tranced MOAB-Class Bloons orbit at one-third the speed of regular Bloons.

This upgrade also unlocks a Monkey Special that allows the player to place a totem sub-tower anywhere within the Mermonkey's range, which causes the trance to emit from the totem instead of the Mermonkey. The player can also use the Monkey Special to remove the totem and return the trance attack to the Mermonkey, with a 6-second cooldown before the player can place the totem again.

5
The Final Harmonic
This elder can echo its irresistible tune anywhere. While devastating to Bloons, the call inspires nearby Heroes with improved range and cooldowns, and Magic Monkeys extra pierce.
Costs:
52,000 XP to unlock
$21,250 (Easy)
$25,000 (Medium)
$27,000 (Hard)
$30,000 (Impoppable)

This upgrade unlocks a buff that applies to all Heroes and Magic towers (except itself) within the totem's range if it exists, or the Mermonkey's range if not. It grants Heroes +15% range and -15% Activated Ability cooldowns and grants Magic towers +3 pierce. Additionally, this upgrade increases the range of the Mermonkey (and its totem, by extension) from 32 units to 38 units, the pierce of its trident splashes from 9 to 18, and further enhances its trance attack.

This upgrade reduces the trance attack's cooldown to 3 seconds, increases its damage over time damage cap to 10,000, and allows its totem to be placed onto any valid location on-screen. It also allows the trance to affect BFBs, ZOMGs, BADs, and Boss Bloons: it can pull in and trance BFBs and ZOMGs in the same way as MOABs and DDTs, but against BADs and bosses, it only strips Camo and detonates damage over time, without pulling them in. BFBs, ZOMGs, BADs, and bosses all consume +3 pierce for the trance.

Strategy

Mermonkeys are amphibious towers that have a large variety of synergies with other towers. They fire tridents that act like a mini Hydra Rocket Pod, and gain different attacks as they level up to serve many different niches in the mid to lategame. Its base tower is very strong for its cost despite its relatively slow speed and low range when not placed in water, two-shotting most early-game Bloons.

  • Mermonkeys have very high power, but can struggle with range. They gain a significant range boost upon being placed in water and can gain a colossal range boost by stacking multiple Echosense Network mermonkeys.
  • The top path focuses on pierce, unlocking the abyssal creature. It attacks with multiple high pierce tentacles and enhances the pierce of nearby monkeys.
  • The middle path unlocks water based attacks. The tridents now deal freezing damage and do even more damage the further they travel. It gains an ability to fire a huge stream of bouncing ice balls. Range greatly benefits the tower, allowing it to fire at bloons where it would deal the most damage. It also benefits from walls, allowing the ice balls to re-hit targets much more often.
  • The bottom path allows the Mermonkey to support other towers. The song it sings hypnotizes nearby bloons, causing them to circle around the mermonkey for a significant amount of time, and detonates all damage-over-time effects on the target, limited in damage but letting those effects be re-applied. It later can echo the song from a totem, allowing it to be re-positioned and its timing to be reset, and have the song buff Heroes and Magic Monkeys.

We were cautious with initial low tier Mermonkey upgrades, but as nothing seriously unexpected came up we’ve reduced the base cost and improved the projectile lifespan which should help with issues on some higher tier upgrades.
— Update notes
  • Buff Cost reduced ― $600 → $475
  • Buff Trident: Projectile lifespan increased ― 0.5s → 1s
  • Buff Cost reduced ― $475 → $375
  • Buff Range bonus when placed in water increased ― +25% → +35%
Last update many players felt blindsided when Brickell stopped applying her buff to Mermonkeys since there was no mention in the balance changes section. We would like to apologize for that - it was tasked internally as a bug as it was indeed unintended to work that way. We then left the issue alone for a long time, mostly due to other more pressing matters, and this issue fell through the cracks. In retrospect, it would have been better to treat this as balance rather than a simple bug fix due to how much time had passed. Reading through your feedback, we did consider just reverting the change, however the bigger issue that the feedback reinforced to us was that players considered Mermonkey to be so bad that it was only a "good" tower when used in combination with a single, water-only hero. This sort of forced synergy goes against our design intentions - namely that Mermonkey being our signature amphibious tower should be able to stand on its own without being balance-locked to an interaction with a single hero. With all that in mind, we feel Mermonkey's highest priority right now is large sweeping buffs to each of the paths, so most of the following changes are our first step towards this starting from the low tier crosspaths.
— Update notes
  • Buff Cost reduced ― $375 → $275
Mermonkey ended up somewhat underrated and overbuffed, mid tiers for top and middle paths have really stood out here lately and need to be reigned back in line.
— Update notes
  • Nerf Cost increased ― $275 → $300
  • Nerf Splash: Radius reduced ― 6 units → 3 units
