Bloons Supermonkey 2, also known as Bloons Super Monkey 2[2] and Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile,[3] is a mobile game in the Bloons Supermonkey series that released in 2016. It is based on the Flash version and has the same general gameplay, but has different levels, characters, powerups, and Boss Bloons. It was originally a paid game, but became free to play in version 1.8.1. It is the first Bloons game to fully feature 3D graphics, though the Flash version used Stage3D to render background elements with parallax scrolling.[4]

Differences from the Flash version

The editor who added this notice elaborates: this should contain general gameplay differences, while the main article should go more in-depth and cover subjects like weapon stat differences
  • Instead of Blop Cash, Red Blops and Blue Blops are two separate currencies. Red Blops are used to buy weapons, while Blue Blops are used for research and buying skins.
  • Allies in this version are separate characters, unlike the Ultimate Monkeys in the Flash version, which are transformations.
  • The player cannot change weapons during a level in this version.
  • This version has multiple characters, each with access to different weapons. The player can choose two characters to bring into a level and can switch between them at any time.
  • This version has two exclusive weapon types, Ice weapons and Storm weapons.
  • The player can activate Epic Weapons in any order in this version, unlike in the Flash version, where the player has to activate Epics in the order they finish recharging.
  • Blop Magnet and Hotter Cooldowns are powerups in this version instead of research.
  • This version has different Boss Bloons. The MOAB is mostly the same as in the Flash version, but the BFB is very different, and all other bosses are original.

Powerups

Main article: Powerup (BSM2 mobile)

Powerups are consumable items that can be equipped before starting a level, replacing the Special Powers from the Flash version. There are two types of powerups: Passive Abilities, which are passive effects that remain in effect without input, and Activated Abilities, which are triggered by the player by pressing a button and can only be used once per game. Powerups are primarily earned from crates, of which up to three can drop from popped Bloons per level. Using powerups multiple times levels them up and improves their effects.

Bonus Powers

Main article: Bonus Power

Bonus Powers are minor powerups dropped by Mystery Bloons, which replace Powerup Bloons. Collecting them activates an effect, such as attacking the Bloons or generating extra Blops.

Characters

Name Image Description
Super Monkey Super Monkey (or Supermonkey) is the starting character. He starts with Dart Shooters equipped to both his left and right arm slots, and he cannot equip Ice weapons or Storm weapons.
Ice Monkey Ice Monkey is unlocked after completing level 25, and is the only playable character for levels 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32 until the player completes level 32. He has access to Ice weapons instead of Dart weapons.
Storm Monkey Storm Monkey is unlocked after completing level 50, though unlike Ice Monkey, playing as him is not required. He has access to Storm weapons instead of Magic weapons.
Doctor Monkey Doctor Monkey becomes a playable character after completing level 100. He has access to all seven weapon types and has the unique ability to deflect Bloptonite and other projectiles from Boss Bloons, making him completely immune to their effects.

Endless Mine

Main article: Endless Mine

The Endless Mine is an area introduced in version 1.1 that hosts weekly events. As the name implies, the levels are endless, but the player has a limited number of lives that are lost when Bloons leak. Each event restricts the monkeys and weapons that can be used, and the objective is to achieve a high score for the leaderboard by popping as many Bloons as possible.

In-app purchases

Main article: Store (BSM2 mobile)

In addition with In-app purchases, Bloons Supermonkey 2 features forced and optional ads. Forced ads occur around every 2+ levels beaten, with optional ads available after every level for doubling blops and boosts earned. There is a daily limit of how many ads can be watched per day for doubling level rewards.

Forced ads can be removed by buying at least $0.99 USD worth of in-app purchases, but requires removing ads manually by contacting Ninja Kiwi Support. The player will get a popup message saying "Your status has been elevated", indicating a successful removal of ads.

Development

Bloons Supermonkey 2 was unveiled at GDC 2016. The reveal included a pre-release screenshot of Monkey Lane and a recording of Level 4.[5] The build in this reveal has several differences from the release version:

  • Blop Cash from the Flash version is used instead of the Blop system of the final game. Collecting Red Blops, Blue Blops, and Gold Blops fills a meter that converts them into a single shared currency.
  • Monkey Lane has minor differences from the initial release, such as the Monkey Town Hall having a green roof. This early rendition includes the entrance to the Endless Mine, despite it being absent from the game at launch.
  • Artwork of the Super Monkey from Bloons Monkey City is used as a placeholder on the UI.
  • Level 4 is slightly different and has 3,892 Bloons instead of 4,025.

The game was originally supposed to release on 19 October 2016, but was delayed to 1 November 2016.[6]

Unused content

Early weapon and powerup icons by Nicolas Charron
  • The Tack Bloon from the Flash version exists in the game's data, but is not used in any levels.
  • There are unused Bloon IDs for the purple UFO Bloon, the Squid, the Robo Boss, and the unused Coco Bloon from the Flash version (superufo, bosssquid, bossrobo, and coco, respectively).
  • There is unused text for Bonus Powers named "Weapon Randomizer" and "Berserk".
  • There are unused Powerup IDs named powerup_shield_swap and powerup_armor_piercing.
  • The texture atlas icons.png, which contains icons for Epic Weapons and Powerups, has unused icons named icon_emp_bomb, icon_phaser_flare, icon_armor_piercing, icon_shield_switch, and icon_stunning_aura.
  • The texture atlas front_end.png, which contains UI graphics that are used outside of levels, has unused icons named icon_phase_modulator, icon_xray, and icon_snap_feeze[sic], which correspond to the Phase Modulator, Energy Signature, and Snap Freeze Special Powers from the Flash version. It also has an unused icon named achievement_icon_cant_hide_from_me, which is intended for the "Can't Hide From Me" achievement. This icon is used in the Google Play Games achievement, but the in-game achievement reuses the icon from the Rang-ler achievements instead.
