Bloon is a corruption of "balloon". The capitalization is inconsistent and official sources often use both "Bloon" and "bloon" interchangeably. The term is sometimes used for entities that do not visually resemble conventional balloons or dirigibles, such as some bosses from Bloons Supermonkey 2 (including the Yeti and Radadactyl), though they still spawn Bloons when popped, implying the Bloons control them.

Website descriptions for early Bloons games frequently refer to the Bloons as "balloons". Occasionally, both "bloon" and "balloon" are used in the same text.
