Damage is the process by which a Bloon, or in the case of the iOS version of Hot Air Bloon, certain bosses and the player, loses health and/or layers in the Bloons TD series, Bloons Supermonkey series, the iOS version of Hot Air Bloon, and Bloons Pop!. Damage is primarily dealt by projectiles or status effects.
Damage is often described in descriptive text as the amount of "layers popped", which, while not incorrect for most Bloon types, is inaccurate for Bloons with multiple points of health.
Layer skipping
Layer skipping is when a tower deals more than 1 damage and skips layers. For example, if an unupgraded sniper pops a Zebra Bloon, since it does more than 1 damage (2), the black/white layers are skipped and only 4 Pink Bloons are left remaining. Layer skipping doesn't account for immunities (except in mobile games of the Bloons TD 5 Generation), so it can allow towers to pop Bloons with layers that would normally be immune to them. For example, when a Heavy Bombs bomb shooter pops a Lead Bloon, it deals 2 damage and can skip the black bloon layer it would normally be unable to damage.
Damage types
Damage types are a property of damage that determines which Bloons the damage can or cannot be dealt to. This concept was introduced in the mobile version of Bloons TD 5 and only appears in the Bloons TD series and Bloons Pop!, although similar mechanics exist in prior games.

Bloons TD 6
Sharp
Cannot pop Lead or Frozen. Attacks that deal Sharp damage are typically sharp objects such as darts, tacks, spikes, and swords.
Towers which deal Sharp damage can be buffed by the Sharpening Stone from Geraldo's Shop. The Flint Tips Relic Knowledge causes Sharp damage to apply a damage over time effect.
Shatter
Cannot pop Lead. Attacks that deal Shatter damage are typically sharp objects with an upgrade to allow Frozen popping.
Explosion
Cannot pop Black. Attacks that deal Explosion damage are typically explosives such as bombs and mortar shells.
Cold
Cannot pop White or Lead. (Cold can damage frozen by default, but Ice Monkeys have an additional property that prevents them from damaging frozen without Re-Freeze.) Attacks that deal Cold damage are typically ice-based and cause Bloons to become Frozen.
Glacier
Cannot pop White. Similar to Cold, except they can pop Lead Bloons.
Frigid
Cannot pop White or Purple. Attacks that deal Frigid damage are typically cold-based magical attacks.
Energy
Cannot pop Lead or Purple. Attacks that deal Energy damage are typically magical or laser in nature.
Attacks and damage over time effects that deal Energy damage deal more damage to Bloons haunted by Corvus. Projectiles that deal Energy damage add more heat than normal projectiles to Blastapopoulos.
Plasma / Fire
Cannot pop Purple. Attacks that deal Plasma damage are typically fire or plasma in nature.
Attacks and damage over time effects that deal Plasma damage deal more damage to Bloons haunted by Corvus. Projectiles that deal Plasma damage add more heat than normal projectiles to Blastapopoulos.
Normal / Acid
Can pop every Bloon type.

Bonus damage
Some attacks deal bonus damage to Bloons that meet certain conditions. They can deal extra damage to:
- Specific Bloon types, such as Pat Fusty dealing extra damage to Ceramic Bloons
- Specific Bloon classes, such as MOAB Mauler dealing extra damage to MOAB-Class Bloons
- Bloon Mods, such as the Ascended Shadow dealing extra damage to Camo Bloons
- Bloons with certain status effects, such as Sauda dealing extra damage to stunned Bloons

Boss Bloons | In Bloons Pop!, some attacks deal reduced damage to Boss Bloons. In BTD6, MOAB Mine does reduced Boss Bloon damage. |

Ceramic Bloons | In BTD6, some attacks that deal extra Ceramic damage also apply to Dreadbloon's Ceramic Armor Shell, while others do not. For example, Deadly Precision does apply to the Ceramic Armor Shell, but Spiked Balls does not. This is never stated within the game itself and there does not appear to be a consistent pattern as to which sources of extra Ceramic damage do and do not apply to it. |

Shocked Bloons | In BTD6, Dartling Gunners only deal extra damage to Laser Shocked Bloons afflicted with the same "tier" of the effect. For example, Laser Cannon only deals extra damage to Bloons shocked by itself and other Laser Cannons, not any lower or higher tier upgrades. |
