Damage is the process by which a Bloon loses health and/or layers in the Bloons TD series, Bloons Supermonkey series, and Bloons Pop!. Damage is primarily dealt by projectiles or status effects.

Damage is often described in descriptive text as the amount of "layers popped", which, while not incorrect for most Bloon types, is inaccurate for Bloons with multiple points of health.

Layer skipping

Layer skipping is when a tower deals more than 1 damage and skips layers. For example, if an unupgraded sniper pops a Zebra Bloon, since it does more than 1 damage (2), the black/white layers are skipped and only 4 Pink Bloons are left remaining. Layer skipping doesn't account for immunities (except in mobile games of the Bloons TD 5 Generation), so it can allow towers to pop Bloons with layers that would normally be immune to them. For example, when a Heavy Bombs bomb shooter pops a Lead Bloon, it deals 2 damage and can skip the black bloon layer it would normally be unable to damage.

Damage types

Main article: Damage type

Damage types are a property of damage that determines which Bloons the damage can or cannot be dealt to. This concept was introduced in the mobile version of Bloons TD 5 and only appears in the Bloons TD series and Bloons Pop!, although similar mechanics exist in prior games.

Bloons TD 6

Sharp

Cannot pop Lead or Frozen Bloons. Attacks that deal Sharp damage are typically sharp objects such as darts, tacks, spikes, and swords.

Towers which deal Sharp damage can be buffed by the Sharpening Stone from Geraldo's Shop. The Flint Tips Relic Knowledge causes Sharp damage to apply a damage over time effect.

Shatter

Cannot pop Lead Bloons. Attacks that deal Shatter damage are typically sharp objects with an upgrade to allow Frozen popping.

Explosion

Cannot pop Black Bloons. Attacks that deal Explosion damage are typically explosives such as bombs and mortar shells.

Cold

Cannot pop White or Lead. (Cold can damage frozen by default, but Ice Monkeys have an additional property that prevents them from damaging frozen without Re-Freeze.) Attacks that deal Cold damage are typically ice-based and cause Bloons to become Frozen.

Glacier

Cannot pop White. Similar to Cold, except they can pop Lead Bloons.

Energy

Cannot pop Lead or Purple Bloons. Attacks that deal Energy damage are typically magical or laser in nature.

Attacks and damage over time effects that deal Energy damage deal more damage to Bloons haunted by Corvus.

Plasma / Fire

Cannot pop Purple Bloons. Attacks that deal Plasma damage are typically fire or plasma in nature.

Attacks and damage over time effects that deal Plasma damage deal more damage to Bloons haunted by Corvus.

Normal / Acid

Can pop every Bloon type.

For example, Deadly Precision does apply to the Ceramic Armor Shell, but Spiked Balls does not. This is never stated within the game itself and there does not appear to be a consistent pattern as to which sources of extra Ceramic damage do and do not apply to it.
