Terrain is a game mechanic in Bloons Monkey City. The terrain of a track determines which towers are favoured and/or restricted on it. This applies even in My Tracks and Contested Territory, which do not have tiles. Some terrain types have a difficulty modifier that increases the base difficulty rating of a tile by a flat amount, but unlike favoured and restricted towers, this only affects tiles and has no effect in My Tracks or Contested Territory.
Special Terrain are variants of terrain types that contain Special Missions (with the exception of Caves Terrain). These terrain types inherit the same placement restrictions as the base terrain (for example, Ports can be placed on Shipwreck tiles because Shipwreck Terrain is a variant of Lake Terrain), though some Special Buildings require specific Special Terrain tiles. Only a limited number of Special Terrain tiles spawn per city.
Water's Edge Terrain is a term for any land tile that is orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to a Lake or River Terrain tile, including any Special Terrain variants. The only function of Water's Edge Terrain is that it is required for building the Pirate School.
