Temple Sacrifice is a game mechanic for the Temple Of The Monkey God in Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City. Upgrading a Super Monkey into a Temple Of The Monkey God sacrifices all towers within the Temple's range, granting it additional attacks depending on the types of towers sacrificed and enhancing its attacks based on the total amount of cash that was invested into the towers it sacrificed. Regardless of difficulty, creating a maxed-out Temple requires sacrificing at least $30,000 worth of each of the following:

It costs at least $150,000 total to max out all five tiers for all five sacrifice categories.

Mechanics

The enhancements Temples gain from sacrificing towers depends on two factors: the kinds of towers sacrificed, and the total amount of cash spent on those towers and their upgrades. When a tower is sacrificed, its cash value (the same metric that determines its sell value) contributes to one of five different categories. The total amount contributed to a category determines that category's level. Each category unlocks an additional attack for the Temple, and the strength of the attack depends on the category's level.

There are five categories of sacrifices, each with five levels. A maxed-out Temple has all five categories of sacrifices at level 5, which requires a minimum of $30,000 contributed to each category. While tower and upgrade costs change based on discounts and difficulty, the cash investment required per threshold is always the same.

Level Total cost of sacrificed towers
1 $1–$1,499
2 $1,500–$3,999
3 $4,000–$9,999
4 $10,000–$29,999
5 $30,000+

In Bloons Monkey City, the Super Monkey's Monkey Knowledge multiplies the value of sacrificed towers by 10% starting at rank 5, effectively reducing the amount of cash required to meet each threshold by roughly 9.1%. The multiplier increases to 20% at rank 10, reducing the cash requirements by roughly 16.7%, and to 30% at rank 15, reducing the cash requirements by roughly 23.1%.

Tier Total cost of sacrificed towers
Ranks 1–4 Ranks 5–9 Ranks 10–14 Rank 15
1 $1–$1,499 $1–$1,363 $1–$1,249 $1–$1,153
2 $1,500–$3,999 $1,364–$3,636 $1,250–$3,333 $1,154–$3,076
3 $4,000–$9,999 $3,637–$9,090 $3,334–$8,333 $3,077–$7,692
4 $10,000–$29,999 $9,091–$27,272 $8,334–$24,999 $7,693–$23,076
5 $30,000+ $27,273+ $25,000+ $23,077+

Sacrifice effects

Unless otherwise stated, the effects of sacrifices are the same between all games of the same system. That is, the sacrifice effects in the Flash versions of Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City, as well as Bloons TD 5 Deluxe, are almost identical between each game, and the sacrifice effects in the mobile versions of Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City, as well as the console version of Bloons TD 5, are completely identical between each game. There are slight differences in sacrifice effects between the Flash games and mobile games.

Main attack

In the mobile games and the console version of BTD5, the Temple's main attack gains +1 damage per sacrifice level it has, up to a maximum of +25 damage with all 25 sacrifice levels (29 damage in total); however, the main attack's damage does not pass through layers, so the extra damage only applies to Ceramic Bloon and MOAB-Class Bloon layers. It has unlimited pierce at all levels.

In the Flash games, the Temple's main attack gains +5 pierce per sacrifice level and +1 damage per two sacrifice levels, up to a maximum of +125 pierce (175 total) and +12 damage (15 total) with all 25 sacrifice levels.

Missile attack

Sacrificing Bomb Shooters and/or Mortar Monkeys unlocks an attack that fires golden missiles every second, which can damage all Bloon types. At higher levels, the Temple fires multiple missiles at a time, but the missiles' explosions become smaller and have less pierce.

Due to an oversight in the mobile games and the console version of BTD5, the level 4 and level 5 versions of the attack are identical to the level 3 version.

Tier Effect (mobile / console) Effect (Flash)
1 Fires 1 missile at a time with 1 damage, 200 pierce, and a blast radius of 200 units
2 Damage: 1 → 2
3 Pierce: 200 → 150
Blast radius: 200 → 150
Missile count: 1 → 3
4 No effect Now deals +18 damage to MOAB-Class
5 Missile count: 3 → 6

Ice attack

Sacrificing Ice Monkeys unlocks an attack that fires exploding ice bombs that damage and freeze Bloons in an area. At all levels, it fires every 2 seconds, has 999 pierce, deals 1 damage, and can hit all Bloon types. At level 5, the Temple gains an Arctic Wind-like effect that passively slows non-MOAB-Class Bloons in an area around it, though the area is much smaller than the Temple's range.

Tier Effect (mobile / console) Effect (Flash)
1 Blast radius of 200 units, freezes 1 layer for 1.5 seconds
2 Blast radius: 200 → 250
Freeze duration: 1.5s → 2s
3 Freeze layers: 1 → 2
4 Blast radius: 250 → 300 Blast radius: 250 → 300
Freeze duration: 2s → 2.5s
5 Arctic wind: slows up to 40 Bloons to 50% speed in radius of 60 units Arctic wind: slows unlimited Bloons to 33% speed in radius of 105 units (BTD5) or 126 units (Battles / BMC)

Glue attack

Sacrificing Glue Gunners unlocks an attack that fires glue globs that splash on impact. At all levels, it fires every 0.5 seconds, glues up to 150 Bloons at a time, slows non-MOAB-Class Bloons to 50% speed, soaks through all layers, and lasts for 22.86 seconds. At higher levels, the glue effect also deals damage over time.

Due to oversights in the Flash games, the level 4 and level 5 versions of the attack are identical to the level 3 version.

Tier Effect (mobile / console) Effect (Flash)
1 Splash radius of 30 units
2 Now deals 1 damage every 2.29 seconds
3 Damage interval: 2.29s → 1s Damage interval: 2.29s → 1s
Splash radius: 30 → 36
4 Damage interval: 1s → 0.5s No effect
5 Now deals the first tick of damage after 0.1s instead of 0.5s

Whirlwind attack

Sacrificing Monkey Apprentices unlocks an attack that fires whirlwinds every 1.25 seconds that blow back non-MOAB-Class Bloons. At higher levels, it also deals damage to all Bloon types.

Due to an oversight in the mobile games and the console version of BTD5, the level 5 version of the attack is identical to the level 3 version, which makes the level 4 version the strongest.

Tier Effect (mobile / console) Effect (Flash)
1 60 pierce
2 Pierce: 60 → 90
3 Pierce: 90 → 120
Now deals 1 damage
4 Pierce: 120 → 150
5 Pierce: 150 → 90 Damage: 1 → 2

Blade attack

Sacrificing any other towers unlocks an attack that fires 16 blades in a ring around the Temple every 0.8 seconds. In the Flash games, the level 1 and level 2 versions of the attack fire darts instead of blades.

Due to oversights in the mobile games and the console version of BTD5, the level 4 and level 5 versions of the attack are identical to the level 3 version.

Tier Effect (mobile / console) Effect (Flash)
1 2 damage, 20 pierce, 0 radius, cannot pop Lead or frozen
2 Damage: 2 → 3
Pierce: 20 → 30
3 Damage: 3 → 4
Pierce: 30 → 40
Damage: 3 → 4
Pierce: 30 → 40
Projectile radius: 0 → 4
4 No effect Changes the spread of the blades slightly[fn 1]
5 Blades can now pop all Bloon types

Strategy

For freeplay setups in BTD5 and Contested Territory setups in BMC, maxing out sacrifices is vital for scoring the highest possible rounds, though the sacrifices are mostly only good for the buffs they grant to the main attack. In the Flash games, the missile attack is the only additional attack that has any meaningful impact on the Temple's damage output, and in the mobile and console games, none of the additional attacks have much significance by themselves.

Bloons Monkey City

Assuming no monkey knowledge discounts or sacrifice contribution increases, it is impossible to reach the final tier of sacrifice for the Apprentice category on all temples. Therefore the sacrifices go as follows:

With Rank 15 knowledge in Super Monkeys, it becomes possible to reach the final tier of the Apprentice category, as well as overall decreasing the requirements for the others.

Footnotes

  1. More specifically, it changes the angle of separation between each blade from 15π8 radians to 31π16 radians.
