Prototypes
[edit | edit source]Four development builds of Bloons, all from February 2007, are archived on the Wayback Machine. These builds do not contain any levels, as they attempt to download them from servers that no longer exist, so they crash when any level is selected. Internal data indicates that all of these builds supported six levels. In the final game, the levels are built into the game directly and on-the-fly level loading is only used in the Bloons World version.
2 February build
[edit | edit source]- This build only features four objects: Basic Bloons, Tack Bloons, Bonus Dart Bloons (which have a different design), and the monkey. There are no blocks.
- Tack Bloons and Bonus Dart Bloons have no special behavior when popped, aside from Tack Bloons causing the monkey's eyes to blink (which all special Bloon types do in the final game).
- The monkey does not have a platform under it.
- This build only runs at 35 frames per second.
- All Bloons play the power-up sound effect when popped. This is the only sound effect in this build.
- This build and all later builds use a 24×13 grid for objects. The final game uses a 24×12 grid.
- There is no background.
- There is no Ninja Kiwi splash screen, and the main menu is simply a list of buttons that attempt to load different levels.
10 February build
[edit | edit source]- This build implements Ice Bloons, Bomb Bloons, and Chomper Bloons.
- The Tack Bloon now functions.
- The Bonus Dart Bloon now causes an icon of the number 1000 to appear when popped, but it has no effect.
- There is now a background.
- The monkey now has a platform, but it is wider than in the final game.
17 February build
[edit | edit source]- This build implements Boomerang Bloons, Triple Shot Bloons, Breakable Blocks, and Solid Blocks.
- There is now a title screen, main menu, how to play menu, and level select. The main menu features a nonfunctional "play 100 more levels" button.
25 February build
[edit | edit source]- This build implements Spikey Ball Bloons, Rubber Blocks, and Unlimited Darts Mode.
- The Bonus Dart Bloon's design and the icon that appears when it is popped now match the final game.
- The Bonus Dart Bloon now functions, granting the player an extra dart.
- The monkey's platform now matches the final game.
- The main menu buttons now play sound effects.
- The "play 100 more levels" button now takes the player to http://www.ninjakiwi.com/getbloons.html.
