from what i can tell, ink platforms behave the same as water for the purposes of buffs like bloontonium reactor. if it used to work differently, i have no idea when it changed

Range modifiers do not affect the size of the ink platform. This upgrade also improves other aspects of the Mermonkey:

This upgrade also improves other aspects of the Mermonkey:
*The Abyssal Creature's tentacles now deal 32 damage (while still dealing +6 damage to Ceramic Bloons), have 50 pierce instead of 25 (still gaining +35% pierce with the Sharper Prongs crosspath), the slaps cover twice as large an area, and their attack cooldown reduces from 2.5 seconds to 1.5 seconds (effectively increasing their attack speed by ~66.7%).

Lord of the Abyss is a relatively weak cleanup T5 on its own but stands out for its strong synergy with towers that depend largely on pierce. In particular, the further pierce bonus is significant on all Spike Factories, benefiting much for Carpet of Spikes and Perma-Spike, and very effective for Spike Storm spam in Boss Events. The ability to place water towers on land is beneficial for extra water space, such as building and powering up<!--i.e. water sacs--> water-based Paragons (especially Nautic Siege Core),<!--e.g. vortex event nautic placed far from vortex--> as well as just generally adding a water-based support such as Energizer, though this specific benefit is not so practical in standard CHIMPS games.

The 5-0-2 is generally preferred, even without considering innate camo detection from Echosense Precision, due to the huge range bonuses that Echosense Networks provide, allowing it to reach almost all of the map. In particular, placing on the middle of the water allows to cover all lanes of Quad. 5-2-0 is only needed for more pierce on the trident attack or the tentacles, but tentacles have huge pierce already.
