Rounds are a core game mechanic in the Bloons TD series. In general, rounds become more difficult and introduce more Bloon types as the game progresses.
Mechanics
Bloon groups
Rounds are subdivided into one or more "groups" of Bloons of the same type, which appear in a set order. For example, in Bloons TD 6, round 50 consists of one group with a single MOAB, one group with eight Fortified Lead Bloons, one group with 20 Red Bloons, one group with 20 Ceramic Bloons, and a second group with a single MOAB.
Starting in Bloons TD 5, the timing and spacing of Bloons within groups vary. This allows rounds to have gaps between groups, have multiple groups at a time, or have groups with dense or spaced-out Bloons.

Round generation
In some cases, particularly in freeplay, rounds are randomly generated instead of being predetermined. This is most prominent in Bloons Monkey City where most tiles use all randomly generated rounds, though some Special Missions have predetermined rounds.
In Bloons TD 6, Apopalypse mode uses the same round generation system as freeplay, but throughout the whole game instead of only after all regular rounds are exhausted.
