Map difficulty
Map difficulty (called Track Type in Bloons TD 5) is a system used to categorise maps in the Bloons TD series. Maps of higher difficulty levels generally feature shorter paths, multiple paths, line of sight and placement blockers, and removable objects. The difficulty of a map does not necessarily correlate with the actual difficulty of the map; an infamous example is Geared in Bloons TD 6, which is classified as Advanced but is harder than several Expert maps.

Bloons Monkey City
Tracks in Bloons Monkey City are assigned difficulty values that are used in the calculation of the overall difficulty rating of tiles. The difficulty of maps is not shown to the player.
Bloons TD 6
In Bloons TD 6, map difficulty has multiple effects:
- It multiplies the amount of experience earned at the end of each round. This includes level XP, tower XP, and Hero XP.
- It multiplies the amount of Monkey Money earned by completing games.
- It affects the tier of Insta Monkey the player earns by completing round 100. Insta Monkeys earned for subsequent rounds (200, 300, etc) are always tier 3 or tier 4.
Initially, after completing the tutorial, only Beginner maps are available. Maps of higher difficulties are unlocked by winning games and earning medals. Winning multiple games on the same map does not count.
All maps created in the Map Editor are considered Intermediate for the purposes of Hero XP.
| Difficulty | Unlocked | XP multiplier | Monkey Money multiplier | Round 100 Insta-Monkey tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | After completing the tutorial | ×1.0 | ×1 | 0, 1, or 2 |
