Freeze is an attack behavior in the Bloons TD series, Bloons Supermonkey 2, and Bloons Pop! that causes Bloons to become frozen. Frozen Bloons stop moving, but are immune to certain kinds of attacks (except in Bloons Pop! and the Flash version of Bloons Super Monkey 2) until the effect wears off. In Bloons TD 6 and Bloons Adventure Time TD, it is a type of mutator. Ice Monkeys, Mad Snowmen, Ice King, and Silas prominently use freezing attacks.
Mechanics
Bloons TD
Freezing causes a Bloon to stop moving and become immune to sharp attacks.[fn 1] Most freezing attacks only last for a limited time and affect a limited number of layers, wearing off before the duration ends if all affected layers are popped. Prior to Bloons TD 6, MOAB-Class Bloons cannot be frozen at all. In Bloons TD 6, Bloons Adventure Time TD, and Bloons TD Battles 2, certain freezing attacks can freeze MOAB-Class, though it reduces their speed to a set amount rather than stopping them completely. Additionally, starting in Bloons TD 5, Regrow Bloons stop regenerating while frozen (except in Bloons Adventure Time TD).
In the mobile versions of Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City, White Bloons and Zebra Bloons are always immune to freezing; if an Ice Monkey with Snap Freeze pops a Rainbow Bloon, it does not freeze its Zebra Bloon children, and if it pops a Zebra Bloon (when buffed to affect White Bloon properties, such as by an MIB or the Ice Fortress), it only freezes the Black Bloon child, not the White Bloon child. The exception is Absolute Zero, which can always freeze White Bloons and Zebra Bloons, but does not prevent Regrow Bloons from regenerating.[fn 2] In the Flash games, an Ice Monkey with Snap Freeze popping a Rainbow Bloon does freeze its Zebra Bloon children, even when not buffed by an MIB.
In Bloons TD 6, Bloons Adventure Time TD, and Bloons TD Battles 2, if an attack both deals damage and freezes, it does not freeze the children of Bloons if they are immune to the attack's damage type. For example, if an Ice Monkey pops a Rainbow Bloon, it does not freeze its Zebra Bloon children unless it is buffed to damage White Bloon properties. Additionally, in Bloons Adventure Time TD, if a Bloon splits into multiple children when popped, an attack that both deals damage and freezes only freezes one of its children.
Some freezing attacks inflict additional effects, such as Ice Shards, Permafrost, Viral Frost, and Icicles, which are separate from freezing (though a Bloon that is immune to freezing is usually immune to these effects as well). It is possible for a Bloon to have multiple of these effects, i.e. if an Ice Monkey with Icicles hits a Bloon, then an Ice Monkey with Ice Shards hits the same Bloon.

The editor that added this notice elaborates: examples of Bloons being frozen in all games (BTD1, BTD2, BTD3, BTD4, BTD5, BTD6, Battles, Battles 2, BMC, BATTD, BSM2, and Bloons Pop!) |
Footnotes
- ↑ Specifically, in the mobile versions of Bloons TD 5, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Monkey City, they become immune to Piercing-type and Ice-type damage, and in Bloons TD 6, Bloons TD Battles 2, and Bloons Adventure Time TD, they become immune to Sharp-type damage. In the Flash versions of BTD5, Battles, and BMC, and in all prior games, the ability to damage frozen is separately defined for each projectile, since damage types do not exist. Ice Monkeys also cannot damage frozen Bloons without Re-Freeze in BTD6 and Battles 2, though this is caused by a projectile filter, not the damage type.
- ↑ Internally, Absolute Zero inflicts a different status effect from freeze, named
AbsoluteZero.
