Bloons 2

Bloons 2 is a title used to refer to multiple games in the Bloons series: the Flash version of Bloons 2, a 2010 browser game developed by Ninja Kiwi, as well as its two expansions Bloons 2 Christmas Expansion and Bloons 2 Spring Fling and the Bloons 2 Level Builder; and the mobile version of Bloons 2, a 2011 iOS and Android game developed by Ninja Kiwi Europe.
Gameplay
[edit | edit source]Bloons 2 follows the puzzle conventions established in previous games: the player controls a monkey that must pop a certain amount of Bloons with a limited amount of darts. This monkey can aim darts in any direction, and darts can be thrown with more power, letting them travel faster and further. Certain bloons grant the monkey different types of weapons that go away when they are thrown. Levels are completed in order, as beating a level unlocks the next level, and with one exception, completing 12 levels unlocks the next zone, containing 12 more levels.
Level skip
[edit | edit source]Level skips are a feature that will transform the monkey into a Super Monkey. This makes the monkey instead shoot a stream of lasers that can pop any obstacle and bloon, and has infinite ammo. The player starts with 1 skip, and the only way the player can get more skips is by buying more with real-life money. When a skip is used on a level, the player can replay the level with a level skip infinitely on the level they used a solution on.
Solutions
[edit | edit source]Solutions are a feature that let the player watch the developer's solution for a level unfold in real time. Having a solution finish playing will not automatically complete a level, and the player must still manually follow the steps shown. The player starts with 1 solution, and the only way the player can get more solutions is by buying more with real-life money. When a solution is used on a level, the player can replay the solution infinitely on the level they used a solution on.
Unlimited Darts
[edit | edit source]Unlimited Darts lets the player throw darts without consuming darts. Using this feature disqualifies the player from earning a new score while active, and the level completion menu will say "No Pain, No Gain...", but the player can still progress through levels normally with this feature enabled. This feature does not exist in the mobile versions of Bloons 2.
Score
[edit | edit source]Unlike Bloons, Bloons 2 has a scoring system. When beating a level, the player receives 10 points per bloon popped, and an additional 100 per extra dart leftover. Earning a new high score will replace the previous score for a level, and Unlimited Darts disables scoring entirely when active.
Changes from Bloons
[edit | edit source]- There is now a Max Power button that instantly charges the next throw to the maximum amount.
- Nested Bloons, Bee Bloons, Blooming Bloons, Ace Bloons, Camo Bloons, and Reverse Gravity Bloons have been introduced.
- The Light Sabre Bloon, Helium Bloon, and Chomper Bloon are absent, though the Bee Bloon serves a similar purpose to the Chomper Bloon.
- Strong Breakable Blocks and Breakable Rubber Blocks have been introduced.
- There are angled variants of all block types instead of just the Rubber Block.
- Levels can now have Bloons that move along cardinal directions.
- A scoring system dependent on amount of bloons popped and leftover darts.
Differences between the Flash and mobile versions
[edit | edit source]The mobile version of Bloons 2 is a reissue of the Flash original for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. It is a remake in a new engine that uses similar graphics. Unlike the Flash version, the Mobile version lacks Unlimited Darts. While the mobile version has some of the content from the Flash version, many levels are replaced entirely with new levels that typically require less reaction speed and precision, and Pirate Cove has 8 more total levels than the Flash version. The main menu track will play on every level instead of the respective zone's track. In terms of control scheme, instead of the power of a throw oscillating over time when holding the left mouse, power is instead determined by how far the player swipes away from the monkey when the player stops touching the screen. In the main menu, there is a help tab that explains everything in the game, and when the player first encounters a mechanic, there will be a popup explaining said mechanic in some instances.
For iOS specifically, there are Game Center achievements and leaderboards, the latter being derived from high score in all levels, which are currently not present in the original Flash version. There is no support for achievements or leaderboards in the Android version of the game.
