Monkeys are a species of primates and the main characters of the Bloons franchise. Since the introduction of the Dart Monkey in the Bloons series, monkeys have appeared in some form in almost every Bloons game to date. Their enemies are the Bloons, balloon-like objects that threaten "the very social fabric of monkey society".[1]
"Monkey" is often used within Bloons games as an umbrella term for playable gameplay elements, even if it includes other animals, such as Wolves, and inanimate objects, such as Banana Farms (though many of the latter are still monkey-operated).
Gameplay
Monkeys comprise most of the towers in the Bloons TD series. In Bloons Monkey City, Bloons TD 6, and Bloons TD Battles 2, "monkeys" and "monkey towers" are often used to refer to towers as a whole. Not all towers are referred to as monkeys; most Special Agents are only referred to as towers, as most of them are based on non-monkey animals (except the Super Monkey Storm, Portable Lake, Pontoon, and Banana Farmer, all of which have been referred to as monkeys in later appearances), and in Bloons Adventure Time TD, the term "monkey" is used to refer to a specific group of monkey characters.
In BTD6 and Battles 2, monkey towers are grouped into one of five different categories: Primary, Military, Magic, Support, and Heroes.
The Bloons Supermonkey series stars Super Monkey as the main playable character, but in Bloons Supermonkey 2, he is joined by Ice Monkey, Storm Monkey, Dr. Monkey, and Allies, which are temporary monkeys summoned by powerups.
Monkeys are the primary method of popping Bloons in Bloons Pop!, dropping projectiles (or themselves) onto them from above.
Monkeys in Bloons Pop! are mostly not categorized, though Heroes can be summoned after filling up the dedicated Hero Bar and a Mega Monkey variant of a given monkey can be deployed if two monkeys of the same type are in the shot queue.
Monkeys are a type of card in Bloons Card Storm. They are the primary means of defending the player against the opponent's Bloons.
Biology
Physical characteristics
The monkeys of the Bloons franchise are mostly brown monkeys with medium-sized tails, black eyes, large ears, four-fingered hands, three-toed feet, and yellowish skin, though much variance exists in the colors of their fur. Druids have pale tan fur, Ice Monkeys have very pale blue fur and darker blue skin, Mermonkeys have fur in various shades of blue and pink, and Desperadoes have pale orange fur and grey skin. It is also common for them to have reddish or orange fur. Many monkeys also have hair, separate from their fur.
One monkey year is the equivalent to roughly three human years.[2]
They do not appear to be based off of any real-life primate species in particular.
Behavior
Monkeys are known to perform various expressions with their pupils, such as winking and turning into spirals when dizzy, though it is also common for them to close their eyelids partially or completely, with pupil expression or without.
Diet

Monkeys eat a variety of foods,[3] but have a strong preference for bananas.[4][5] Monkeys are incapable of getting hyperkalemia.[6] Other foods they eat include pancakes[7] and pizza.[5]
The monkeys sometimes put bananas on their pizza, but "mostly the dessert ones".[5]
Society and culture
Monkey society was completely peaceful before the Bloons arrived[8], and it continues to be peaceful aside from the Bloon War.
The Monkeys support each other regardless of culture and belief,[9] with utmost respect for individual identities.[10] They strongly support the LGBTQ[9] and neurodivergent[10] communities.
Arm wrestling has been prohibited in Monkey culture since an unspecified incident in 2016.[11]
Language
Monkeys speak a variety of real-world languages. Most monkeys speak English, but some are bilingual and speak other languages such as French, Portuguese, and Korean. In addition, most monkeys know a sign language.[12]
The monkeys have their own writing system called Monklish. Contrary to popular belief, Monklish is not the main spoken language of the monkeys, but a writing script unique to the Blooniverse.[13] For the most part, it is a cipher of the Latin alphabet as it is used in English. It is also available in Bloons TD 6 as a selectable language, though it simply displays the English text in a custom font with Monklish characters.
Technology
The monkeys have technology that is, in more ways than not, more advanced than human technology. They are able to use cybernetics to recreate the bodies of monkeys who have been badly injured or lost limbs (for example, Cyber Quincy), and they use both magic and science in their battles against the Bloons. Technology sees the Sun God as a benchmark of destruction that they try matching with technology by utilizing Phase Crystals for the Ray of Doom.[14] However, the majority of them seem to prefer more low-tech lives - most monkeys don't even wear clothes.
Religion

Monkeys worship the Sun God predominantly, with some, such as High Priestess Adora and Monkey Priestesses, acting as clergy. Clerical devotion is seemingly fervent, though the Monkey Priestesses are patient in their pursuits to join the Sun God.[15] In addition to the Sun God, there are various lesser-known deities, including an ancient springtime goddess[16] and Popseidon, the Mermonkeys' god.
There appears to be a tangible link between religion and the military, as Captain Churchill has described the Sun God as allying itself with whichever side has the "best" weaponry.

Relationship with real life
Monkeys are aware of the player's existence.[17] They are able to interact with the internet. According to Ninja Kiwi, Blooncyclopedia is "a bunch of info that lovely community members have made readable for us".[18]
