In standard play, it is played on Hard difficulty. In singleplayer, it can only be played on a map after completing it on Impoppable. Like Impoppable, it starts on round 6 and ends after round 100. This mode applies a number of restrictions:
*The player starts with one life and cannot gain any more (except in Odyssey mode), similar to Impoppable.
*Continues are disabled. The option to continue is replaced with "Retry Last Round", similar to the Challenge Editor.
*Hero Boosters are disabled.
*Powers (including Insta Monkeys) are disabled.
*Monkey Knowledge does not apply.
*All sources of cash except starting cash, cash per pop, and end-of-round cash are disabled. Map gimmicks that generate cashback (e.g. Three Mines 'Round) are not disabled.<!--separated sentence, bc not all maps have money-making map gimmicks-->
**Bloon Traps, XXXL Traps, and Obyn Greenfoot's Wall of Trees only generate the amount of money that would have been gained by popping the bloons normally.
**Banana Farms are disabled (even if enabled in the Challenge Editor).
**Double Cash Mode does not apply.
*The player cannot sell most towers. If a tower is forcibly sold through other means, such as using a Support Chinook to relocate a supporting Arctic Wind or Lord of the Abyss, it returns $0. Note that sacrifices, such as Adora's Blood Sacrifice, are not considered selling.
**The player is still permitted to sell Champion Sentries, Geraldo's Level 18+ Creepy Idol, and Special Poperations's Marine.
*Fast Track Mode does not apply.
*Perks do not apply. | |||
==Medals== | |||
There are two versions of the CHIMPS medal: the red version, which is earned by completing the map on CHIMPS at all, and the black version, which is earned in addition to the red version by completing the game in one session without exiting the game or using the "Retry Last Round" option. If the player only earns the red version, the black version can still be unlocked by replaying the map on CHIMPS and meeting the condition. In Co-op, the red CHIMPS medal is earned if the player quits and re-joins the game later; this doesn't affect the type of CHIMPS medal the other participants earn, so it's possible for players to get different CHIMPS medals from each other even if they played the same match. The map thumbnail doesn't show the red version if the black version is owned, but both are shown on the profile.

CHIMPS is significantly more difficult than most other game modes, especially when going for a black border for a map without guides, as it makes all cash-generating towers, such as Monkey Town, Rubber to Gold, Merchantman, and the hero Benjamin, useless. It is important to not put down too many low-tier towers in the early-game and mid-game only for them to become useless later on. Instead, focus on a few strong towers with support as well. The hero, too, is extremely important, as they have nearly 100 rounds to level up and gain massive attack and/or support capabilities to become by far the most valuable tower on the screen.
Earning the red CHIMPS badge is not too difficult, and sometimes is easier than Impoppable because there's less worry about accidental leaking due to Retry Last Round giving second chances for free. The real challenge is completing without Retry Last Round; always pre-plan a consistently working strategy for all stages of the game, especially on harder maps.
