XXXL Trap is the Engineer Monkey's path 3 tier 5 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. It improves the Engineer Monkey's traps, allowing them to collect and insta-kill MOAB-Class Bloons (excluding BADs and Boss Bloons), and increasing their capacity greatly. Additionally, the upgrade allows the Engineer Monkey to deploy traps more frequently. The XXXL traps have increased value; they provide +200% additional cash from collected Bloons, except on CHIMPS and Deflation modes.

Mechanics

[edit | edit source]

Just like the tier 4 version, XXXL Trap collects Bloons that touch it, instantly popping them. However, it gains MOABs, BFBs, DDTs (if visible), and ZOMGs. By default, traps will be placed on the nearest part of the track to the Engineer Monkey, including over walls and obstacles. If no part of the track is within its range, the Engineer Monkey will not deploy a trap unless given the Larger Service Area upgrade and the trap is retargeted.

Bloons popped by traps do not provide cash right away. Each trap can hold 10,000 RBE (10,030 with Big Traps Big Traps). Once full they no longer pop bloons, and are ready for collection. Collectible traps will shake, and can be collected by moving the cursor over them, or collected automatically after some time. They can also be collected by Banana Farmers and Monkey Wall Street. Once collected, the trap provides the player with as much cash as all the trapped Bloons are worth, plus an additional 200% cash value if not playing in CHIMPS mode. This additional income can be increased further by Monkey Town, Monkey City, and Rubber to Gold.

If a player deploys an XXXL trap, no Engineer Monkey purchased by the same player can deploy another XXXL trap until the first one is collected. However in co-op, multiple players can deploy an XXXL trap at the same time.

The Engineer Monkey deploys a new trap 4.6 seconds after a trap is collected, which can be decreased by attack speed buffs until it reaches the minimum trap delay of 2.1s. The deploy speed is reduced to 2.3s with the Faster Engineering upgrade and reduces the minimum trap delay from 2.1s to 1.4s.

If upgraded to Larger Service Area, the Engineer Monkey's trap location may be retargeted to anywhere within its range, including over walls and off the track. If upgraded to Deconstruction, the trap will de-fortify any Fortified Bloons before collecting them, letting it catch more Bloons should any Fortified Bloons enter the trap.

Traps can collect any Bloon type including Lead. However, traps cannot collect Camo Bloons unless the Engineer Monkey was provided camo detection when the trap was deployed. Providing the Engineer Monkey camo detection after a trap is deployed will not grant the trap camo detection; the Engineer Monkey will need to place a new trap before its trap can collect Camo Bloons.

Upon reloading a save file, any traps that existed when the game was saved will remain. However, buffs such as Monkey City and Camo detection will not be saved for traps.

Strategy

[edit | edit source]
This section was last updated for: version 49.2

XXXL Trap excels at insta-killing MOAB-Class Bloons, especially for later rounds such as round 81 and above, and on cash-generating game modes it is a solid mid-to-late-game income option when combined with income-per-pop buffs such as Monkey City, Rubber to Gold, and Bounty Hunter (if used only for MOAB-class). It favors slower Bloons such as ZOMGs and BFBs, rather than faster Bloons such as DDTs, due to the downtime of the traps. Additionally, its cash generation counts as pops, including income-per-pop buffs, therefore an excellent choice to maximize degrees for Master Builder.

Crosspaths are beneficial to improving its efficiency. 0-1-5 (Larger Service Area) is usually preferred due to its capability to reposition traps, and 0-2-5 (Deconstruction) is optional and should only be bought to handle masses of Fortified Bloons. 2-0-5 (Faster Engineering) improves the trap generation rate and lowers the trap's downtime, which is better if repositioning is not needed and rate of trapping is more important than repositioning.

For CHIMPS, XXXL Trap is usable as a rapid instakill against lots of slow-moving blimps, including Round 98, although often difficult to justify for practical CHIMPS runs when many of the T5's around its price range are more efficient and have superior T4 stepping stones.

  • Buff Traps no longer collect for reduced cash when under a Monkey Town (bug fix)
  • Nerf Traps should collect for the correct amounts after resuming save (bug fix)
  • Nerf Traps will no longer allow bonus traps to be placed when reloading save (bug fix)
Continuing our efforts to make crosspaths meaningful and fit the style of each path more solidly, a number of crosspath and base level balance shifts were made.
— Update notes
1-0-5, 2-0-5
  • Buff Oversize Nails crosspath now allows Sentries to pop frozen Bloons
  • Buff Oversize Nails crosspath now increases Sentry pierce by 1
Engineer is quite poor in terms of crosspathing, so we’ve added crosspath benefits to Cleansing Foam [...]
— Update notes
Some big buffs to Bloon Trap so it can now be used more effectively
— Update notes
  • Buff Can now spawn multiple traps per round, at a cooldown of 20 seconds for a new trap
Finally last update we allowed Bloontrap to be set multiple times per round, and we wanted to stay on the side of caution with a long cooldown, but after seeing it in the wild we are happy to make this cooldown faster.
— Update notes
2-0-5
  • Buff Faster Engineering: rate buff to Bloon Traps increased ― 0.8× → 0.6×
Engineer XXL trap is extremely powerful but too expensive for backline dps and we’d like to see it more viable for frontline engineer builds
— Update notes
  • Buff Upgrade cost reduced ― $60,000 → $54,000
we have also re-envisioned the ‘Larger Service’ crosspath as giving smarter service as well in the form for targeting for Bloontrap & Cleansing Foam
— Update notes
  • Buff Overall cost reduced by $50 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
0-1-5, 0-2-5
  • Buff Trap: Manual targeting option added
To add a bit of quality of life solving problems with trap needing to fill once before moving to target location, Bloontraps placed off-track never being able to fill, and maybe even to just add some interesting micro, any Bloontraps will now become expired after a short delay when their Engineer has a new target set.
— Update notes
0-1-5, 0-2-5
  • Buff Trap: Picking new target expires current Bloontrap & places new one
XXXL Trap 205 crosspath hasn’t actually ‘been working’ due to the base attack rate being faster than minimum deployment delay so we have slowed the base rate to make 205 crosspath actually matter. Along with this, since the fortification bonus aspect of x2x hasn’t ever done anything for Bloontraps, 024 will now ignore the fortification of Bloons that it eats
— Update notes
  • Nerf Bloontrap deploy rate reduced ― 2.8s → 5.8s
0-2-5
  • Buff Deconstruction crosspath grants Bloontraps the ability to de-fortify anything it consumes prior to capturing
2-0-5
  • Buff Faster Engineering crosspath 'should now work' and actually make Bloontrap’s cooldown faster
  • Nerf Bloontrap deploy rate reduced ― 2.8s → 3.48s
The 005 crosspath fix in the last update left XXXL Trap slower than previously even if crosspathed to 205, so we are increasing that base 005 slightly to match up the 205 crosspath again so that it isn’t any slower than before.
— Update notes
  • Buff XXXL Trap: attack cooldown reduced ― 5.8s → 4.6s
    • Note: 205 decreased from 3.48s to 2.76s attack rate. Effectively 2.8s due to minimum trap delay
Some extra of a makeup buff for XXXL, while the crosspathing rework itself feels nice it ended up nerfing the high-level micro play of this upgrade far more than intended.
— Update notes
  • Buff Upgrade cost reduced ― $54,000 → $48,000
Lastly Bloontrap was rather unfairly able to steal all cash in Co-op games; we want to avoid dividing one player's farm earnings between the group entirely, but decided on a compromise here to prevent it from stealing that base amount.
— Update notes
  • Neutral Bloontrap now divides the base value of absorbed Bloons between all players when collected, any extra multiplied value is fully granted to the owner of the Bloontrap
    • Note: Overall buff for co-operative gameplay, a nerf to the Bloon Trap user
Middle crosspath feels too good for Bloontraps because of the massive quality of life it brings, so we’re pushing the DPS more for top crosspath by allowing Double Gun to also double the projectiles of Sentries. The expensive XXL Trap's cash generation comes in too late given Bloontraps fall off as an income generator in the late game, so we’re reducing the upgrade cost and increasing the cash generation that it brings.
— Update notes
  • Buff Upgrade cost reduced ― $48,000 → $45,000
  • Buff Trap: cash per Bloon captured increased ― ×2 → ×3
  • Nerf Trap: Disappears when the Engineer is sold or sacrificed. No cash will be collected from the trap. (bug)
    • Note: This behavior is intended for Tier 5 but not for Tier 4
1-0-5, 2-0-5
  • Buff Double Gun Sentries now shoot two projectiles at once
1-0-5, 2-0-5
  • Buff Sentry: Double Guns upgrade no longer reduces their pierce ― 2 → 3 (bug fix)
0-1-5, 0-2-5
  • Nerf Bloontrap cooldown should no longer break depending on upgrade order (bug fix)
    • Note: Larger Service Area no longer bypasses minimum trap delay (2.8s)
Really only one major change here; a rebalancing to how the 2xx Crosspath applies across various engineer upgrades, and some base stats being changed to accommodate fitting this.
— Update notes
  • Buff Trap: Replacement delay reduced ― 2.8s → 2.1s
2-0-5
  • Buff Trap: Replacement delay reduced ― 2.8s → 1.4s
  • Neutral XXXL Trap should now count cash generated correctly (bug fix)
X-1-5, X-2-5
  • Neutral Bloon Trap now correctly moves on target point set after loading a save (bug fix)
