Versions

Bloons Monkey City (often abbreviated BMC and occasionally Monkey City) is a title shared by two games: the Flash version of Bloons Monkey City, a 2013 browser game developed by Ninja Kiwi that is based on the Flash version of Bloons TD 5, and the mobile version of Bloons Monkey City, a 2014 mobile game developed by Ninja Kiwi Europe that is based on the mobile version of Bloons TD 5. The gameplay of these games is a hybrid between city-building and tower defense: players build their city by constructing buildings and expand it by capturing tiles, which is done by playing a tower defense mini-game that is heavily based on Bloons TD 5. Buildings are used to unlock more towers and upgrades to use in the tower defense gameplay.

Gameplay

City

A player's city is the primary location of the game. Within the city walls, a player can place Buildings to develop the city, and improve the players' arsenal of Monkeys, in order to capture new tiles. Tiles outside of the city borders can be attacked to capture the tile (or defended from incoming Bloons via Monkey v Monkey.)

On the Flash version of Bloons Monkey City, there is an additional second city that functions similarly, but certain resources like City Cash and Buildings are not transferable between cities, and have their own City Level.

Buildings

Main article: Building

Buildings are the main system to unlock towers and upgrades for use during the tower defense gameplay. Most buildings are purchased with City Cash, take a certain amount of real-world time to build, and reward experience once construction is complete. They can have conditions such as requiring a certain City Level or only being buildable on certain kinds of terrain. They are divided into multiple categories:

City Level

Main article: City Level

City Level is the main leveling system in the game. Increasing it provides additional starting cash and lives, as well as extra City Cash and Bloonstones per level. Leveling up is required for unlocking new towers and upgrades, as well as building additional MvM BuildingsBloons Monkey City (Flash), Monkey Buildings, and Resource Buildings. Capturing tiles as well as constructing buildings and researching upgrades earns experience which is required to level up.

Tower defense

Further information: Bloons TD 5#Gameplay

The tower defense gameplay is based heavily on Bloons TD 5, sharing most of the same towers, upgrades, Activated Abilities, Bloons, and game mechanics, with some balance changes to towers. Unlike in BTD5, rounds are randomly generated based on the difficulty.

Monkey Knowledge

Monkey Knowledge is a system that unlocks permanent enhancements for towers and general gameplay. Monkey Knowledge is progressed by opening Monkey Knowledge Packs that contain XP for random Monkey Knowledge categories. Knowledge Packs can also contain other rewards such as City Cash, Bloonstones, and more Knowledge Packs.

Tiles

Tiles (commonly referred to Terrain) are areas that allow the player to build on them once captured. There are a total of 3000 tiles in every city, with 2991 of them being capturable (the player starts with a plot of 9). There are 11 categories of tiles (14 in the Flash version), with the dominant one being Grass (Desert in the second city on Flash). Each tile category has unique favored towers, which makes every upgrade and base cost 15% cheaper, along with restricted towers that cannot be used. Tile categories tend to spawn in small groups around the map, with each category having a unique special mission.

  • Grass Terrain favors Monkey Aces (along with Bloonchippers on mobile) and restricts no towers.
  • Forest Terrain favors Ninja Monkeys and restricts Tack Shooters and Banana Farms.
  • Heavy Forest Terrain favors Sniper Monkeys and restricts Tack Shooters and Banana Farms (along with Heli Pilots on mobile).
  • Hills Terrain favors Tack Shooters (along with Heli Pilots on mobile) and restricts Dart Monkeys.
  • Mountain Terrain favors Ice Monkeys and restricts Monkey Aces, Banana Farms, and Dartling Guns (along with Heli Pilots on mobile).
  • Volcano Terrain favors Monkey Apprentices and Mortar Monkeys and restricts Ice Monkeys, Monkey Villages, and Boomerang Monkeys.
  • Snow Terrain favors Ice Monkeys and restricts Dart Monkeys, Boomerang Monkeys, Dartling Gunners, and Monkey Engineers.
  • Desert Terrain favors Boomerang Monkeys and Bomb Shooters and restricts Spike Factories, Super Monkeys, and Glue Gunners.
  • River Terrain favors Banana Farms and restricts Ninja Monkeys, Bomb Shooters, and Engineer Monkeys.
  • Jungle Terrain favors Glue Gunners and restricts Monkey Apprentices and Ice Monkeys.
  • Lake Terrain favors Monkey Buccaneers and restricts Ninja Monkeys and Bomb Shooters (along with Bloonchippers on mobile).
  • Badlands Terrain favors Monkey Engineers and Sniper Monkeys and restricts Monkey Aces and Banana Farms.
  • Arid Grasslands Terrain has the same favors and restrictions as the Grass Terrain, favoring the Monkey Ace and restricting none.
  • High Desert Terrain favors Monkey Aces and Monkey Engineers and restricts Spike Factories, Super Monkeys, Banana Farms, and Dartling Guns.

Special Items

Main article: Special Item

Special Items are permanent upgrades to a city, and are stored in a designated menu. They are typically unlocked in Special Missions or Treasure Chest tiles, and contain a variety of effects, from increasing starting cash to upgrading the Temple Of The Monkey Gods to Vengeful temples.

Special Items transfer between cities on the Flash version of Bloons Monkey City.

Monkey v Monkey

Monkey v Monkey is a gameplay feature for sending attacks to other players' cities. Players send attacks by consuming Bloontonium, and defenders fight on a tile with increased difficulty for additional rewards, including City Honor.

Contested Territory

Contested Territory allows players to compete against each other for resources. To capture the territory, the player must beat a minimum threshold of rounds with increasing difficulty. Conquering the territory will provide a cash prize upfront to be collected, then will generate more cash over time - separate to a city's Banana Farms. If another player takes control of the territory, the round they lost to will become the threshold. After a set amount of time without any successful usurps of the territory, the territory will be reset, and nobody will be in control of the territory.
