Ice Monkeys (known as Ice Towers or, rarely, Ice Balls prior to Bloons Monkey City) are monkeys that freeze Bloons in an area around them. Inspired by the Ice Bloon from the Bloons series, they were introduced in the original Bloons Tower Defense, and have been included in all mainline Bloons TD games and some spinoffs since.

Gameplay

[edit | edit source]

The Ice Monkey freezes Bloons within a short range at a slow rate. Frozen Bloons do not move further along the track until they are either popped or the duration of the freeze ends. Frozen Bloons cannot be popped by sharp damage in a similar way to Lead Bloons. White Bloons are a type of Bloon throughout all of the games that are immune to this freeze effect until popped.

In both Bloons Tower Defense and Bloons Tower Defense 2, the Ice Tower is the only tower that can freeze Bloons, with Cannons being able to pop them by default and Boomerangs and Super Monkeys being able to pop them in 2 with their upgrades. In Bloons Tower Defense 3, the newly-introduced Ceramic Bloons are also immune to freezing, although this immunity would be removed in later titles.

In Bloons TD 4, its ultimate upgrade is Arctic Wind, which passively slows all Bloons around the tower. BTD4 also introduced Zebra Bloons that are immune to freezing and explosives to further inconvenience the tower.

In the Bloons TD 5 generation of games, the Ice Tower has two upgrade paths. The top path focuses on freezing and clumping large amounts of Bloons within its area, while the bottom path focuses on dealing damage and freezing the entire map with an Activated Ability. Its Specialty Building in BTD5 is the Ice Fortress, while its main buildings in Bloons Monkey City are the House of Ice and the Cryo Lab.

In Bloons TD 6 and Bloons TD Battles 2, the Ice Monkey is classified as a Primary tower, and gains the ability to damage Bloons by default. Its upgrade paths are somewhat reshuffled; the top path uses ice shards to pop Bloons, remove properties, and cause them to take more damage. The middle path has a slowing aura and the map-slowing Activated Ability from BTD5's bottom path. The bottom path allows it to target Bloons like a conventional tower via a cannon that freezes Bloons and MOABs over a longer range. In BTD6, its Paragon is the Herald of Everfrost.

In Bloons Adventure Time TD, the Ice Monkey is a Common ally, functioning similarly to its base tower counterpart in previous games. It can be equipped by all monkey characters and Ice King.

In the mobile version of Bloons Supermonkey 2, a playable Ice Monkey unlocks after completing Level 25. He can equip the same weapons as Super Monkey, with the exception of Dart weapons, replaced with Ice weapons. Ice core weapons can freeze Bloons in an area around the Ice Monkey, while Ice arm weapons can pop frozen Bloons. Ice weapons don't affect White or Zebra Bloons.

The Ice Monkey is a Monkey that is unlocked at level 9. It freezes Bloons in a radius every time it bounces off Bloons or bouncy surfaces. Its Mega Monkey variant, Mega Ice Monkey, does more damage and spreads its freeze onto neighboring Bloons.

Appearance

[edit | edit source]

In the first four Bloons TD games, the Ice Tower took the form of a blue snowglobe-like mechanism with ice surrounding it. Starting with Bloons TD 5, Ice Monkeys were redesigned to be proper yeti-like monkeys with white fur, blue skin and blue eyes.
