- Compared to Firestorm, Spike Storm has more charges but less damage, both overall and individually, and is less cost-efficient. However, an important distinction is that it is the cheapest board clear, is a reliable counter to Red Bloon spam (including Swarm Red Bloons and Red Bloon Storm), and it can be equipped on any Hero. Additionally, its 2 charges is more flexible at removing extremely weakened bloons.
- For Player 2, a Spike Storm can counter Player 1's Red Bloon spam on Round 1, which cannot be done with Firestorm without Cash Drop. It is generally not recommended on the first turn unless the opponent sends 6+ bloons.
- Whether to use one or two Spike Storms against low-tier bloon spam may depend if the opponent may be planning to use a Bloon Embiggen to OTK you; against aggro players, it may be safer to use both to kill as many bloons as possible if they can afford Bloon Embiggen.
- If expecting a Spike Storm from the opponent, Growth Gas Bloons weaken the effect that Spike Storm has because of its low damage per hit. Two Growth Gas will make Spike Storm do very little against swarms.
- Players running Red Bloon Apopalypse can use Spike Storm to boost their own Extractor Bloons or scale Heart of Vengeance Druids safely.
- Spike Storm has a similar damage-to-gold ratio to Super Monkey Storm but is less effective against Bloons with Armor.
