Lives (also referred to as health or hearts) are a resource that primarily appears in the Bloons TD series. In the Bloons TD series, it limits the number Bloons the player is allowed to leak. When a Bloon leaks, it removes a certain amount of lives (usually equal to its RBE), and causes a game over if the player runs out. Lives can also be consumed to activate effects, such as Activated Abilities. In most games in the series, the number of lives the player starts with depends on the difficulty.

Increasing starting lives

Life generation

Certain mechanics can generate extra lives in the middle a game. Some allow the player to have more lives than they started the game with, but others cannot. The player cannot generate extra lives on Impoppable mode in Bloons TD 5 and Bloons TD 6, but can in Bloons Adventure Time TD using sources that allow more lives than the starting amount.

In BTD6, the player earns 90% less lives if they have 1,000 or more lives (rounded down to a minimum of 1). If a source of lives causes the player to reach more than 1,000 lives, only the lives that put the player above 1,000 are reduced (for example, collecting a life crate from a Support Chinook at 995 lives earns 6 lives, because the first 5 lives made the player's lives equal to 1,000, and the remaining 5 were reduced to 1). By default, the player is capped at 5,000 lives, though some modes and challenge rules alter this.

Shield lives

In Bloons TD 6 and Bloons Adventure Time TD, the player can generate additional "shield lives" that act as an additional layer of lives. These function similarly to normal lives, except Bloons will remove shield lives before regular lives, and effects that consume lives (such as Ezili's Sacrificial Totems) will only consume regular lives. Shield lives have their own limit on the amount the player can have, separate from regular lives.

In the Endless Mine event, the player has a life meter that functions similarly to the Bloons TD series. When a Bloon escapes, the player loses lives equal to its RBE and resets their score multiplier. The First Aid Bonus Power restores up to 50 lives, and the Invincibility Bonus Power prevents the player from losing lives or their multiplier for 30 seconds. The player starts with 150 lives and is capped at 200.
