The card artwork depicts an Alchemist losing its balance while holding an acid potion, choking with one pupil shut. It is in a cobwebbed wooden building with a furnace connected to pipes sprawling on the ceiling, the room filled with tables and shelves of laboratory paraphernalia.
The Acid Pools lingering for at minimum two turns means this monkey effectively has up to 85 damage with each attack. This makes it a powerful early game monkey, making it easy to use in decks that prefer to spend Gold on cycling cards over defense, such as Quincy OTK decks. The Alchemist has 42.5 damage per turn, making it the second strongest DPT possible for 2 Gold, with its benefits over Dart Monkey Twins being the lingering effect of Acid Pools, and only taking one monkey space.
The lingering effect of the Acid Pools also makes it strong against OTK, burn and aggro, as the 30 damage from the Acid Pools (if placed in the frontmost spot of the track) will hurt the leaking Bloon. This is one of the few ways to make leaking Bloon take damage, even if the opponent has cards like Return To Sender or Ability Ban. It can also be helpful against Setup Bloon, popping it and not allowing its ability to trigger (except versus Zee Jay's passive).
