Rogue Legends (or Rogue Legend)[2] is an upcoming paid DLC expansion for Bloons TD 6.[3] It is a "BTD rogue-lite adventure"[4] and the first of a series of DLC campaigns called Legends.[3] In a Rogue Legends campaign, the player navigates a monkey on a grid with different types of tiles,[5] encountering Bloons and uncovering towers and enhancements to add to their Party.[6] When the player encounters a Bloon, the game transitions to a short Bloons TD game, much like the tiles in Bloons Monkey City, during which the player uses their party's towers, Hero, and items called artifacts to clear all the rounds. The campaign is split across five stages, each ending with a special Stage Boss tile.

Rogue Legends will release in version 47.0[3] and will cost USD$9.99.[1] It will involve a Quest titled Rogue Legends Preview that gives "a glimpse of the Rogue Legends campaign",[7] and a unique music track. Purchasing the DLC will unlock exclusive cosmetic items, and more can be unlocked through gameplay.[8]

Gameplay

The player begins a Rogue Legends campaign by selecting a Hero or Hero Skin, which determines the player's starter party, which is composed of two Insta Monkeys and one or more Artifacts.

Artifacts are objects that provide passive benefits or drawbacks for towers, special mechanics for towers, projectiles or the gameplay, and in some cases, can add additional Monkeys to the party, working on a similar way to Relic Knowledge in the base game. Each Hero / Hero skin has a set initial Artifact and the player is also able to select up to three additional artifacts to start their journey. The additional Artifact selection will have limited options at the beginning, but players will be able to choose between more options as they progress in the DLC. Players can encounter over 60 different artifacts[8] and most of them come in three levels of rarity: Common, Rare and Legendary, with more rare Artifacts providing larger benefits.

A campaign is divided on five stages. On each stage, the player progresses through a campaign map by navigating tiles on a hexagonal grid. Players can move by clicking on the tiles indicated by a blue wisp but they will be unable to move back afterwards. In some stages there can be multiple starting tiles or branching paths that the player can choose from, but all possible roads will eventually converge to the Final Boss tile. There are over 10 unique stage layouts that can appear.[8]

Some tiles will have a Red Bloon floating over it that lead the player to a Bloon Encounter, which is a game of BTD6 with a custom set of rules, rounds and mechanics. In Rouge Legends, the player cannot place towers and Powers freely and can only use their party Insta Monkeys, which cost cash to place. They are cheaper to place than their combined base and upgrade costs, but more expensive to upgrade than normal.[1] Insta Monkeys in the player's Party are reusable, but have a 4-round cooldown between uses and can only have up to 10 members, once they obtain an 11th tower, the game will ask the player to remove a Monkey to make space. Completing encounters earns items called tokens (represented by an icon of Geraldo's head) that can be used to trade with Merchants. The player has five hearts (separate from lives) and loses a heart each time they lose an encounter. If the player runs out of hearts, the campaign ends with no option of continuing.[1]

Bloon Encounters feature a unique "Rogue Bloons" round set.[8] These rounds scale in difficulty much quicker than the regular set (for example, MOABs will start spawining in the mid 10's), and to compensate, the players recieve a much larger amount of starting cash in addition to their party Insta Monkeys and active Artifacts. Encounters start at round 1 out of 10 with the default challenge rule modifiers. After each encounter cleared, all future encounters in the same stage will start 1 round later and will last for 3 more rounds at the end (ex. 1/10, 2/13, 3/16, and so on); also Bloon speed, MOAB health, and Ceramic health will be increased by +5% each encounter. During Bloon Encounters the player can earn temporary items called Boosts, which can be Artifacts, Powers (which are purchased with cash), or a one-time Insta Monkey. Temporary artifacts will be active for the rest of the encounter and Powers or towers obtained from Boosts will be lost upon finishing the encounter regardless if they were used or not.

Players can also encounter other type of tiles such as Mini Games or Mini Bosses that can award additional artifacts if the player can beat certain scores in Race, Endurance Races, Least Cash or Boss Rush modes, Merchants that can exchange their Artifacts for tokens or other Artifacts, Loot Chests with additional Artifacts, Camp Fires[sic] on which players can choose between adding more Monkeys to the party, upgrading their party's Insta Monkeys or Artifacts or regain Hearts, and, at the end of the stage, there is Final Boss tile which is a Bloon Encounter featuring a Boss Bloon (in Normal difficulty), players need to defeat it to progress to the next stage. Boss game will start at Round 15/50.

In Stage 2, the Bloon Encounters will start at round 2/13 and progress in the same way as Stage 1, also, the Final Boss will be in its Elite version and will start at Round 20/55.

After defeating Stage 5, the player finishes the campaign and can unlock CHIMPS mode,[6] which allows the player to play a campaign endlessly.[8]

Parties

Parties are a set consisting of a Hero, Insta Monkeys, and artifacts. Each Hero has a unique starter party that includes two Insta Monkeys and one hero artifact, and Hero Skins have different starter parties. Before beginning a campaign, the player can also choose their own "permanent artifacts" to start with, though limited to a combined artifact cost of 9.

Artifacts

Artifacts are items that can be equipped during a campaign. All of them have beneficial effects, though some have negative effects as trade-offs, and some of them can add more Insta Monkeys to the player's party. The player starts their campaign with one artifact called a "hero artifact" that depends on the Hero or Hero Skin, and can choose up to three additional "permanent artifacts". Each permanent artifact has a value that determines its cost to equip in the starter party and to trade at a merchant. There are over 60 unique artifacts and upgraded versions.[6] Most of them appear to come in at least three rarities: Common, Rare, and Legendary. Common Artifacts cost 3, Rare Artifacts cost 6, and Legendary Artifacts cost 9. After completing a stage, the player can extract one Artifact[8] to allow it to be chosen in a Starter Party, but the extracted artifact will be lost for the rest of the current campaign.

Boosts are temporary items that are obtained every 3 rounds on Bloon Encounters, after a certain number of rounds on Mini Games, at the start of a Mini-Boss and every 5 'pops' afterwards, and after triggering a Skull during a Final Boss fight. Boosts can be Artifacts, Insta Monkeys, or Powers (including the Cave Monkey).

When selecting a boost, the player can choose one of three items (except during Races or Endurance Races where they are awarded automatically), or spend cash to reroll them. The first reroll is free, and every successive roll costs an additional $300 ($300, $600, $900 and so on). Insta Monkeys from Boosts can only be used once, and Powers from Boosts cost cash to place instead of Monkey Money.[6]

Players do not lose a heart if they fail to achieve a goal score.
  • Mini Boss — Similar to Mini Games, these can award Artifacts if the player can achieve certain goal scores by challenging a Boss Bloon in Boss Rush mode. These use the normal round set with the boss-specific modifiers rather than the Rogue Bloons round set, and Powers are enabled. Players will be able to see which Boss Bloon they will be facing in that tile as it will be floating above it.
  • Loot Chests — Gives the player a set of Artifacts to choose one of.
  • Legendary Augment Tiles — Sparkling tiles that allow the player to choose a Legendary Artifact upon completing them.
  • Merchants — Allows the player to trade Artifacts and tokens for different Artifacts. A trade is performed by selecting 1 to 4 Artifacts from the Merchant's inventory and a combination of tokens and Artifacts from the player's inventory until the value of both selections are the same (Tokens have a value of 1 and Merchant Artifacts are valued on twice its regular price), and upon confirmation, players will lose the selected tokens and artifacts which and gain the ones they have chosen from the Merchant. Only one trade is allowed per Merchant tile.
  • Log Bridges — Allows the player to cross water tiles.
  • Camp Fires[sic] — Allows the player to choose one of four benefits:
    • Recruit: "Befriend a new Monkey to add to your Party." — The player can select a new Insta Monkey to add to their party.
    • Mentor: "Mentor one of your monkeys to make it stronger." — Permanently increases the upgrade tier on one path of a chosen Insta Monkey if available. For example, a 2-0-0 Alchemist can be enhanced into a 3-0-0 Alchemist, 2-1-0 Alchemist, or 2-0-1 Alchemist.
    • Enhance: "Study an Artifact to increase its strength" — Converts a Common or Rare artifact into the next tier.
    • Heal: "Taking a short nap can restore some health" — Restores two hearts, this option will not be available if the player already have 5 hearts.
  • Final Boss — A final battle against a Boss Bloon, played in a similar way to the Boss Challenge mode, but the Boss will spawn immediately upon starting the game. This tile will use the corresponding challenge modifiers of a Bloon Encounter tile, but the Boss will usually have higher health but lower speed modifiers compared to regular Boss Challenge. Defeating it rewards the player with a choice between a Legendary Artifact related to the Boss or Tier 5 Insta Monkeys, also the game will progress to the next stage on a new map.

Development

Legends were first mentioned in passing the update notes for version 41.0 as "periodic Legends content drops for players looking for even more challenge".[9]

Version 44.0

More information about Legends was revealed in the update notes for version 44.0, and that the first Legends will be DLC and a "rogue-lite adventure".

Legends - this is our answer to player questions and business questions around BTD7. We’re not ready to build BTD7 as we see incredible technical and creative potential inside BTD6 without disrupting our awesome community. With Legends, our plan is to build challenging new content that’s worthy of being in a new game and offer it inside BTD6 for a reasonable price. PC and console players will recognize that these are DLCs (downloadable content), which are standard ways to expand content on those platforms, so we are bringing this approach across to mobile as well. Overall we’ll continue to focus updates on a huge variety of content that players get at no additional cost, but we do need to keep IAPs and DLCs coming into the game to support all of our development. Hopefully tempting, this first Legends will be a BTD rogue-lite adventure.

Version 45.0

The update notes for version 45.0 revealed that the development team was planning a "dev diary" to preview the art and gameplay of Rogue Legends.

Legends is shaping up to be amazing and we’re eager to share more details (check back to the Update 44 Notes Looking Forward if you missed the explanation). We’ll plan on at least one dev diary during development to preview the art and gameplay of this super cool rogue-lite DLC.

Version 46.0

The update notes for version 46.0 revealed that the first Legends DLC was planned to be released in version 46.0, but was delayed until version 47.0.

Those who have been following along may note we planned to release our first Legends DLC along with version 46, but there was even more we wanted to add to truly make it a full game within the game, so we hope you won’t mind waiting until update 47 in early February.
