The Spike Factory is a Support tower in Bloons TD 6. It attacks by passively dispensing piles of spikes onto the nearby track that damage Bloons on contact. Each pile contains 5 spikes (6 with One More Spike One More Spike), and each spike deals 1 damage. Each spike pile disappears at the end of the round or after 50 seconds, which allows it to build up a thick layer of spikes over time. It can't damage Lead Bloons or frozen Bloons, which destroy its spike piles without being damaged.

It can be upgraded to dispense explosive spiked mines, MOAB-class-Bloon-shredding spikes with drastically increased attack speed, as well as laying spikes over the whole track, or increasing the duration and damage of the spikes.

The editor that added this notice elaborates: Base Spac with 5-spike piles, and clearing out some stray bloons

The Spike Factory's basic attack places a pile of spikes onto a random point on the track within its range every 1.75 seconds. It can attack even if there are no Bloons within its range, and it can deploy spikes onto parts of the track that are behind line of sight blockers, but it can't deploy spikes if there is no point on the track within its range. Each pile is a projectile that can re-hit Bloons every frame,[fn 1] and the number of spikes in the pile represents the amount of pierce it has. If its pierce is increased, it displays more spikes in the pile accordingly; it can only visually show up to 20 spikes, but it has no pierce cap. By default, each pile contains 5 spikes (6 with One More Spike One More Spike) that each deal 1 sharp-type damage. Spike piles expire on their own at the end of each round (except in Apopalypse mode, Race Events, CT Time Attack, and Boss Rush), after a Boss Bloon spawns, or 50 seconds after being deployed.

Although the Spike Factory's spikes can hit Camo Bloons, its attack is not considered to have Camo detection. This means that the Spike Factory does not allow Advanced Intel to target Camo Bloons in its range, nor does it allow Gerry's Fire to target or hit Camo Bloons if used on it.

Upgrades

Path 1

Bigger Stacks
Tier 1 — 170 XP to unlock
Icon of Bigger Stacks
Creates larger piles of spikes per shot.
$680 — Easy
$800 — Medium

This upgrade increases the pierce of new spike piles. For most Spike Factories, the pierce increases from 5 to 10. The pierce of Carpet of Spikes increases from 10 to 15, while the pierce bonus of Perma-Spike is +35, from 50 to 85. Despite its name, the spike piles don't have a larger radius.
White Hot Spikes
Tier 2 — 600 XP to unlock
Icon of White Hot Spikes
Cuts through Lead Bloons and Frozen Bloons.
$510 — Easy
$600 — Medium
$650 — Hard

Produces spiked balls that do extra damage to Ceramic and Fortified Bloons.
$1,955 — Easy
$2,300 — Medium
$2,485 — Hard
$2,760 — Impoppable
Instead of spike piles, it dispenses spiked balls that deal 2 Normal-type damage, +3 Ceramic damage, and +1 Fortified damage, and have 11 pierce.
Spiked Mines
Tier 4 — 15,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Spiked Mines
Spiked mines explode violently when they lose all their spikes.
$8,075 — Easy
$9,500 — Medium
$10,260 — Hard
$11,400 — Impoppable
Instead of spiked balls, it dispenses spiked mines that explode after expiring. Each spiked mine has 18 pierce, dealing 2 Normal-type damage, +6 Ceramic damage, and +3 Fortified damage. After losing all spikes or expiring naturally, the spiked mine explodes over 30 blast radius (40 with Long Reach). The explosion has 30 pierce and deals 10 Explosion-type damage, deals +2 Ceramic and +3 Fortified damage, and ignites Bloons without Purple Bloon properties with a burning damage-over-time effect that inflicts 10 damage every 2 seconds for up to 6.05 seconds.
Super Mines
Tier 5 — 32,500 XP to unlock
Icon of Super Mines
Creates gigantic exploding spiked mines that can wipe out almost anything.
$106,250 — Easy
$125,000 — Medium
$135,000 — Hard
$150,000 — Impoppable
This upgrade dispenses super mines half as quickly (every 3.5 seconds), but the mines deal much more damage and have many more explosions that can pop any Bloon type. Each super mine has 18 pierce, dealing 50 Normal-type damage, +30 Ceramic damage, and +15 Fortified damage. Every time a spike is depleted, a non-burning mini-explosion is produced, dealing 20 damage, with +15 Ceramic damage and +5 Fortified damage, to up to 30 non-Purple Bloon Bloons within 30 radius. If the super mine expires, it generates a huge burning explosion that deals 1,000 Normal-type damage, plus +500 Ceramic and +250 Fortified damage, to up to 60 Bloons within 100 radius (133 with 5-0-1). The burn damage-over-time is increased from 10 damage to 2,500 damage every 2 seconds for up to 6.05 seconds.

Path 2

This upgrade reduces the attack cooldown of the Spike Factory's attack by 20%, increasing its attack speed by +25%. For most Spike Factories, except Super Mines and Perma-Spike, attack cooldown is reduced from 1.75 seconds to 1.4 seconds.
Even Faster Production
Tier 2 — 650 XP to unlock
Icon of Even Faster Production
Increases production rate even more.
$680 — Easy
$800 — Medium
$865 — Hard
$960 — Impoppable
This upgrade reduces the attack cooldown of the Spike Factory's attack by 25%, increasing its attack speed by about +33.33%. In total, combined with the Faster Production upgrade, the total cooldown reduction is 40%, for a total attack speed bonus of about +66.67%. For most Spike Factories except Super Mines and Perma-Spike, attack cooldown reduces from 1.4 seconds to 1.05 seconds.
MOAB SHREDR
Tier 3 — 2,500 XP to unlock

$3,000 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the damage the Spike Factory's spikes deal to MOAB-Class Bloons by +7, for a total of 40 damage per pile (54 with One More Spike One More Spike and Very Shreddy Very Shreddy) and 80 damage when crosspathed with Bigger Stacks (99 with One More Spike One More Spike and Very Shreddy Very Shreddy).
Spike Storm
Tier 4 — 11,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Spike Storm
Spike Storm ability: Shoots out a thick layer of spikes over the entire track.
$5,950 — Easy
$7,000 — Medium
$7,560 — Hard
$8,400 — Impoppable
This upgrade grants the Spike Storm ability, and does not change the Spike Factory's main attack. When the ability is activated, spike piles are scattered over all available lanes, launching clusters of 4 spike piles every 0.04 seconds for 2 seconds, resulting in up to 204 spike piles per ability (208 on every 4th use). This attack has a minimum cooldown equal to its base cooldown, meaning it does not benefit from any attack speed buffs unless its attack speed is being reduced by something like a Jar of Pickles. Storm spikes are distributed randomly across available lanes (based on the amount of track area; longer lanes and overlapping areas will get a proportionately larger share of the spikes) and they last 9–11 seconds. Each group of 4 simultaneous spike pile launches is considered 4 separate attacks rather than 1, limiting the uptime of buffs that use a shot counter (e.g. Berserker Brew). The ability has a cooldown of 50 seconds.

Crosspaths affect the Spike Storm ability. Storm spikes gain +5 pierce in the same way as the main spikes when given Bigger Stacks, and change from Sharp to Normal damage type if given White Hot Spikes. With Long Reach, storm spikes last +100% longer (18–22 seconds), and with Smart Spikes the ability will only send spikes to the active lanes of the current round.

Carpet of Spikes
Tier 5 — 35,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Carpet of Spikes
Regularly sets a carpet of spikes over the whole track.
$34,850 — Easy
$41,000 — Medium
$44,280 — Hard
$49,200 — Impoppable
This upgrade grants a passive Spike Storm ability every 15 seconds, behaving identically to its activated Spike Storm ability, which is mechanically unchanged from the previous tier (only the spike stats are changed). Notably, this attack's minimum cooldown is the same as its default cooldown (both 0.04 seconds), meaning it does not benefit from any attack speed buffs unless its attack speed is being reduced by something like a Jar of Pickles. The passive and activated Spike Storms cannot both fire simultaneously.

Additionally, all of the Spike Factory's spikes deal +2 damage and have +5 pierce, and the main attack gains +100% increased attack speed (0.525-second attack cooldown) and more range (50 instead of 34). Both the main and ability spikes deal 3 damage, +7 to MOAB-Class. Each spike pile has 10 pierce, or 15 with the 1-5-0 crosspath. Passive and active Spike Storm spikes last for 18-22 seconds (36-44 seconds with 0-5-1) and can persist across 1 round.

Path 3

Long Reach
Tier 1 — 120 XP to unlock
Icon of Long Reach
Increases range for spike pile drops, plus piles last longer.
$130 — Easy
$150 — Medium
$160 — Hard
$180 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the Spike Factory's range by 8 distance units (from 34 to 42) and increases the lifespan of its spike piles during a round from 50 to 100 seconds. It also has the following benefits when given as a crosspath:
Smart Spikes
Tier 2 — 550 XP to unlock
Icon of Smart Spikes
Spike Factory gains special targeting priority and accelerated production at the start of each round.
$340 — Easy
$400 — Medium
$430 — Hard
$480 — Impoppable
This upgrade gains a tower buff at the start of each round that quadruples its attack speed for 3 seconds. If crosspathed with Spike Storm and Carpet of Spikes, their abilities will only dispense spikes on paths that currently have Bloons on them, and their abilities will dispense more spikes if they're triggered while the buff is still active. The buff can be absorbed by Lych. The Spike Factory also gains four new targeting options in addition to the default random behavior, which is labeled as Normal in the options:
  • Close — Dispenses spikes on the nearest section of track within range.
  • Smart — Targets whichever track has the Bloons that are closest to reaching the exit (or has Bloons at all), and dispenses spikes on the point closest to the end of that track. If it cannot reach any paths that have Bloons on them, it will dispense spikes on the points closest to the ends of each track within its range, keeping their coverage roughly even.
  • Set Target — Dispenses spikes to any location within range, the target point can be selected by clicking the Set Target button on the tower's menu and it can be set outside the track.
  • Automatic — Changes behavior depending if there are Bloons in range, if there are, the Spike Factory will target its spikes towards the Bloon that is closest to the exit ("First" targeting). Otherwise it will drop the spikes in the closest point to the front of the track within range, also, if there is more than one track in range, the spikes will be divided in a similar way to the Smart targeting.
Long Life Spikes
Tier 3 — 2,100 XP to unlock
Icon of Long Life Spikes
Spikes last much longer and can carry over one round.
$1,105 — Easy
$1,300 — Medium
$1,405 — Hard
$1,560 — Impoppable
Newly placed blue caltrop-like spike piles last for up to 140 seconds and can carry over 1 round, lasting up to 2 rounds. Like Smart Spikes, its predecessor, its attack speed quadruples at the start of each round, and has four additional targeting options (Close, Smart, Set Target, Automatic).
Deadly Spikes
Tier 4 — 9,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Deadly Spikes
Extra deadly spikes can pop through 3 layers per spike and last another round.
$3,060 — Easy
$3,600 — Medium
$3,890 — Hard
$4,320 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases damage of newly placed spike piles from 1 to 3, and they carry over 2 rounds instead of 1, lasting up to 3 rounds instead of 2. Spikes still last for up to 140 seconds.
Perma-Spike
Tier 5 — 29,500 XP to unlock
Icon of Perma-Spike
High damage spikes become almost permanent.
$25,500 — Easy
$30,000 — Medium
$32,400 — Hard
$36,000 — Impoppable
Spike piles are produced about 3.46× slower (without crosspaths, attack cooldown is increased from 1.75 to 6.06 seconds), but they now deal 10 damage per spike, have 50 pierce (85 with 1-0-5), last up to 300 seconds, and carry over up to 3 rounds. Additionally, the 4× start-of-round speed boost now lasts for 10 seconds. Unlike other Spike Factories (except the Paragon), spikes placed by a Perma-Spike are preserved when loading a save, though any buffs the spikes had will be lost.

Mega Massive Munitions Factory
Tier 6 — 1,000,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Mega Massive Munitions Factory
A factory of explosive spike Bloon annihilation.
$637,500 — Easy
$750,000 — Medium
$810,000 — Hard
$900,000 — Impoppable
The Mega Massive Munitions Factory deploys giant spiked mines in its radius which last for up to 5 rounds and split into 10 smaller spike piles after exploding. It has the same targeting options as Smart Spikes. It also creates a permanent carpet of spikes on the track that passively damages all Bloons on the map, similar to the vines created by Spirit of the Forest. It has two Activated Abilities:
  • Controlled Burst — Quadruples its main attack's attack speed for 15 seconds and is only usable once per round, similar to Smart Spikes.
  • Spikeageddon — Launches powerful land mines that land on approximately equally spaced intervals along each path that explode on contact with a Bloon, dealing massive damage and releasing 3 smaller spike piles. Activating the ability while there are still mines on-screen detonates them instead of spawning more mines. The number of mines dispensed depends on the track length and number of paths.

Strategy

For more in-depth strategies, see Strategy:Spike Factory (BTD6).

Spike Factory's capability to stockpile makes it a versatile cleanup option, and its higher-tiers are capable of dealing high damage to MOAB-class bloons. Generally, it serves as a last line of defense, to be placed at the end of the track so there's enough time to build up spikes. Base and lower-tier Spike Factory assist cleanup, especially early Camos, allowing it to tank all Camos up to round 37 on single-lane maps.

The first path is pierce-oriented, and its higher tiers are mainly for cleanup against stray Ceramics, as well as groups with Spiked Mines and above. These higher tier upgrades are generally preferred at the back of the lanes, but can sometimes be used for direct DPS. For crosspaths, White Hot Spikes offers innate popping of Leads, especially DDTs, in addition to additional direct strength of stockpiles.

The second path is speed-oriented and its higher tiers specialize in single-target damage to MOAB-class. Its activated abilities are an excellent option against single targets, with Spike Storm being a potent support against the Round 100 BAD, and Carpet of Spikes excelling against most non-dense rounds and fighting off Boss Bloons. When used as a crosspath, it offers consistent production, refreshing spike piles quicker.

The third crosspath focuses on utility, and higher tiers improve lifespan and the efficiency of stockpiles. In addition to long-lasting spikes, Smart Spikes enables focused targeting of spikes, which is important on multi-lane maps or to micromanage spike placements. Starting from Long Life Spikes stalling out rounds is important to maximize spikes for the next round(s).

Tips

  • If Smart Spikes cannot be bought, it is advised to place Spike Factory such that it has barely enough range to reach the track, in order to minimize random placement of spikes.

“
Like a few other towers before it, the attack speed crosspath for Spike Factory has outshined the others. We have reworked the lower Spike Factory tiers to distribute this power more evenly while keeping high tier factories at a similar level of power.
