Introduced Version 49.0

The Desperado is a Primary tower in Bloons TD 6, introduced in version 49.0. It uses a pistol that fires twice in rapid succession each time it attacks. It has high range but low pierce and damage, and cannot pop Lead Bloons, Frozen Bloons, or Camo Bloons. Its upgrades focus on other weapons with different attacking styles. Its first path uses revolvers that fire multiple times per attack which can be further upgraded to fire even faster. Its second path uses a long-range rifle that can land Crits, with further upgrades able to place bounties on Bloons that increases the damage they take and generates more cash when popped, and unlocks two Activated Abilities for support. Its third path uses a shotgun that pushes Bloons back, with further upgrades improving shotgun power and knockback with life loss gimmicks.[1]

Mechanics

[edit | edit source]

The Desperado's pistol attack fires multiple shots in quick succession before it starts its cooldown. The delay between shots is not affected by attack speed modifiers, and the cooldown does not start until after it fires all shots. If it fires a shot, but there are no targetable Bloons within range while it still has shots left, it waits until it can fire its next shot and does not start its attack cooldown. If it reaches the end of a round, it instantly reloads its shots.

The 0-0-0 Desperado fires two shots per attack with a 0.1-second delay between shots and a 1.2-second attack cooldown. Each shot deals 1 Sharp-type damage to its target. Its shots hit the Bloon instantly, without any travel time, and it cannot hit more than one Bloon at a time (even with pierce buffs). Its path 1 upgrades affect the shot count and shot interval of its pistol, and its cooldown can be reduced from its path 1 and 3 upgrades as well as external buffs.

Upgrades

[edit | edit source]

Path 1

Quickdraw
Tier 1 — 200 XP to unlock
Icon of Quickdraw
Attacks faster the further Bloons are from Desperado.
$170 — Easy
$200 — Medium
$215 — Hard
$240 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the Desperado's attack speed based on the distance between it and the Bloon closest to it. Its attack speed increases by 1% per unit of distance between them, up to a maximum of +50% if the closest Bloon is at least 50 units (the range of an unupgraded Super Monkey) away.

This upgrade does not count Bloons the Desperado cannot target (e.g., Bloons behind line of sight blockers or Camo Bloons when it does not have Camo detection) when determining the closest Bloon. If crosspathed with Deadeye, it does not count Bloons within the rifle's deadzone while using the rifle attack.

Standoff
Tier 2 — 450 XP to unlock
Icon of Standoff
Attacks faster the fewer Bloons are in range.
$170 — Easy
$200 — Medium
$215 — Hard
$240 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the Desperado's attack speed by 60% if only one Bloon is within range, but reduces it by 10% per extra Bloon (to a minimum of 0% extra attack speed with 7+ Bloons in range).

This upgrade does not count Bloons the Desperado cannot target (e.g. Bloons behind line of sight blockers or Camo Bloons when it does not have Camo detection) when determining the number of Bloons within range. If crosspathed with Deadeye or Enforcer, this upgrade only counts Bloons within range of the attack the Desperado is currently using, and Deadeye's rifle does not count Bloons within its deadzone. Crosspathing with Bounty Hunter and Golden Justice also applies this while using Marked to Pop, but does not affect the attack speed of the passive marking attack.

Big Iron
Tier 3 — 2,100 XP to unlock
Icon of Big Iron
Upgrades pistol to a 6-shot revolver that can pop Lead Bloons. Attacks even faster the fewer Bloons are in range.
$1,020 — Easy
$1,200 — Medium
$1,295 — Hard
$1,440 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the number of shots it fires per burst from 2 to 6, increases its damage from 1 to 2 and changes its damage type to Normal. Since it must fire all six shots before it starts its attack cooldown, it effectively takes at least an additional 0.4 seconds to unload all shots and start its next cooldown. Additionally, it increases the maximum Standoff bonus from +60% to +120%, but increases the penalty per additional Bloon from -10% to -20%, so the minimum number of Bloons it takes to negate the attack speed bonus is the same.
Twin Sixes
Tier 4 — 9,500 XP to unlock
Icon of Twin Sixes
Gains twin higher damage revolvers.
$4,930 — Easy
$5,800 — Medium
$6,265 — Hard
$6,960 — Impoppable
This upgrade doubles the number of shots the Desperado fires per burst (from 6 to 12), halves the time it takes to unload each burst of shots (from 0.1 to 0.05 seconds), and increases the damage of each shot from 2 to 6. The time it takes to unload a full burst is effectively unchanged from Big Iron, and the cooldown after unloading all shots remains unchanged. Visually, it has two revolvers and alternates between them when firing.
The Blazing Sun
Tier 5 — 29,000 XP to unlock
Icon of The Blazing Sun
They say Desperado shoots so fast them revolvers catch alight.
$14,025 — Easy
$16,500 — Medium
$17,820 — Hard
$19,800 — Impoppable
This upgrade causes the tower to change behavior depending on how many shots it fires and Bloons it destroys. Its attack speed lowers slightly each time it fires a shot, but increases each time it fully pops a Bloon. If it lowers its own attack speed enough, it starts applying Fire-type damage over time in an area around each Bloon it hits. It resets if it goes a short time without firing any shots.

This upgrade also improves the following base stats of its pistol attack:

  • Damage per shot increases from 6 to 20, and now deals +40 damage to Ceramic Bloons
  • Attack cooldown reduces from 1.2 seconds to 0.3 seconds (without affecting the time it takes to unload a full burst)

Path 2

Eagle Eye
Tier 1 — 200 XP to unlock
Icon of Eagle Eye
Desperado can see Camo Bloons.
$130 — Easy
$150 — Medium
$160 — Hard
$180 — Impoppable
This upgrade grants the Desperado Camo detection and the Camo Prioritization targeting option.
Bullseye
Tier 2 — 650 XP to unlock
Icon of Bullseye
Shots get a chance to Crit. Chance to Crit goes up when target Bloon is further away.
$300 — Easy
$350 — Medium
$380 — Hard
$420 — Impoppable
This upgrade adds a chance for the Desperado's attacks to crit, dealing 4× damage. The chance depends on the distance between the Desperado and the target, starting at 2.5% and increasing by 0.25% per unit of distance. With no range buffs, it has a 17.5% chance to crit at max range.
Deadeye
Tier 3 — 3,750 XP to unlock
Icon of Deadeye
Take Aim ability: target Monkey gains improved range, accuracy, and Camo detection. Desperado gains a long range rifle to use against distant targets. Rifle shots excel against Fortified targets and can pop Lead Bloons.
$2,550 — Easy
$3,000 — Medium
$3,240 — Hard
$3,600 — Impoppable
This upgrade unlocks a long-range rifle attack that the Desperado uses on Bloons that are out of range of the pistol. It is a non-burst attack that shoots more slowly than the pistol, but deals 10 damage and +10 damage to Fortified Bloons, has 4 pierce, and can damage all Bloon types. Like the pistol attack, it has a chance to crit for 4× damage depending on the distance between the Desperado and the target Bloon.

This upgrade also modifies the pistol, increasing its base damage from 1 to 6 but reducing its range to 40. It also unlocks the Take Aim Activated Ability, which allows the Desperado to temporarily buff a selected tower, increasing its range by 25%, reducing its projectile spread by 50%, and granting it Camo detection for 15 seconds, with a 30-second cooldown.

Bounty Hunter
Tier 4 — 18,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Bounty Hunter
Marked to Pop ability: Marks extra Bloons, then proceeds to attack all Marked Bloons. Marked Bloons take more damage and give more cash. All Desperados can target Marked Bloons.
$5,100 — Easy
$6,000 — Medium
$6,480 — Hard
$7,200 — Impoppable
This upgrade unlocks the following:
  • A non-damaging attack that places a mark on a Bloon every few seconds. Marked Bloons take double damage from all Desperados and earn double cash when popped.
  • A Monkey Special for all Desperados that allows them to prioritize marked Bloons, similar to Camo Prioritization.
  • The Marked to Pop Activated Ability, which rapidly marks Bloons for a short time, then attacks all marked Bloons, with infinite range.
  • An improved Take Aim ability, granting the targeted tower more range and accuracy and now allowing it to damage Black Bloons, White Bloons, and Purple Bloons for the duration.

Additionally, with this upgrade, the pistol and rifle now deal bonus damage to Ceramic Bloons (+6 and +10, respectively), which doesn't stack with its extra damage to Fortified Bloons when dealt to Fortified Ceramic Bloons.

Golden Justice
Tier 5 — 40,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Golden Justice
They say Desperado's longarm can hit clean through an army of Bloons.
$35,700 — Easy
$42,000 — Medium
$45,360 — Hard
$50,400 — Impoppable
This upgrade changes the rifle attack to produce a straight line shot that fires half as fast (every 3.18 seconds) but has practically infinite pierce and deals 280 base damage and +280 damage to Ceramic or Fortified Bloons. Additionally, this upgrade changes the following:
  • Increases the crit damage of all its attacks from 4× to 8×.
  • Improves the pistol attack to now deal 24 base damage, +24 damage to Ceramic Bloons, mark the target Bloon, and produce an area of effect around the target that hits up to 8 Bloons overlapping the initial shot's centerpoint, dealing the same base damage and damage to Ceramic layers as the initial shot. The AoE can hit the same Bloon as the initial shot.
  • Increases the base attack speed of the marking attack from every 6 seconds to every 3 seconds, and reduces its minimum attack cooldown from 3 seconds to 1 second.
  • Increases the base damage of its Marked to Pop ability from 30 to 300. Its version of the ability occupies a separate slot from Bounty Hunter's.

Path 3

Wanderer
Tier 1 — 150 XP to unlock
Icon of Wanderer
A Wanderer works best alone. Desperado attacks much faster, but less so when more Monkeys are in each weapon's attack range.
$185 — Easy
$220 — Medium
$240 — Hard
$265 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the Desperado's attack speed by 45%, but reduces it by 9% for each tower within its range except itself, to a minimum of 0% extra attack speed. This does not count sub-towers, flying units, or other Desperados with Wanderer.

If the Desperado has additional weapons, it counts the whole range(s) of the Desperado that overlap. For Deadeye and above, the rifle still loses stacks from towers placed in its deadzone. For Enforcer and above, the shotgun only loses stacks from towers placed in its range, while the pistol loses stacks from towers placed in range of either weapon.

Nomad
Tier 2 — 600 XP to unlock
Icon of Nomad
Attacks faster the more Bloons are in range. When lives are lost gets temporary range and attack speed increase, plus a small amount of cash if a Bloon leaked.
$240 — Easy
$280 — Medium
$300 — Hard
$335 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the Desperado's attack speed by 2% for each Bloon within its range, up to a maximum of +50% with 25 Bloons in range, and unlocks a passive effect that triggers upon losing a life, which increases its range and attack speed and generates additional cash from Bloons that leak. It lasts for 15 seconds and has a 60-second cooldown.

Unlike Quickdraw and Standoff, this upgrade does count Bloons the Desperado cannot target (e.g., Bloons behind line of sight blockers or Camo Bloons when it does not have Camo detection) when determining the number of Bloons in range. If crosspathed with Deadeye, this upgrade only counts Bloons within range of the weapon the Desperado is currently using, and the rifle does count Bloons within the deadzone. Crosspathing with Bounty Hunter and Golden Justice also applies this while using Marked to Pop, but not the passive marking attack.

Enforcer
Tier 3 — 3,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Enforcer
Uses a shotgun that can knock back Bloons when they get within close range.
$1,785 — Easy
$2,100 — Medium
$2,270 — Hard
$2,520 — Impoppable
This upgrade increases the damage of its pistol attack from 1 to 6 and unlocks a shotgun attack. The shotgun shoots a spray of three projectiles, spread evenly over a 35° angle, each with 3 pierce and 3 damage. It can pop frozen Bloons and knock non-MOAB-Class Bloons backwards (-100% speed versus all, including Lead Bloons and Ceramic Bloons) for 0.2 seconds.

The shotgun has a 1.97-second attack cooldown. Like its pistol attack, it fires the shotgun twice each time it attacks, with a 0.1-second burst interval. Unlike the pistol, it always fires twice; if there are no Bloons it can target after the first shot, it fires again in the same direction as the first shot. It uses the shotgun if it can target any Bloons within its close range (36 units before range buffs), and uses its pistol otherwise. Nomad's attack speed buff only counts Bloons within range of the weapon the Desperado is currently using.

Avenger
Tier 4 — 14,000 XP to unlock
Icon of Avenger
Shotgun hits release shrapnel and can even knock back MOABs. When lives are lost, weaker Bloons only take 1 life each for a short time.
$8,075 — Easy
$9,500 — Medium
$10,260 — Hard
$11,400 — Impoppable
This upgrade adds a new property to Nomad's passive effect while it is active: it causes all Bloons ranked Rainbow and below to only deduct one life if they leak. If the effect triggers from a Bloon leaking, that Bloon still costs its normal number of lives.

Additionally, this upgrade improves both of its attacks:

  • Increases the pistol's base damage from 6 to 18, and grants it +18 damage to Ceramic Bloons.
  • Increases the shotgun's knockback to -200% speed for regular Bloons and allows it to knock MOAB-Class Bloons back at -50% speed.
  • Causes each shotgun pellet to spray three shrapnel projectiles after damaging a Bloon, spread over a 120° angle. Each shrapnel projectile deals 1 damage and has 6 pierce.
The Desert Phantom
Tier 5 — 29,000 XP to unlock
Icon of The Desert Phantom
They say Desperado hits so hard it's like a mine blast.
$26,350 — Easy
$31,000 — Medium
$33,480 — Hard
$37,200 — Impoppable
This upgrade causes Bloons to explode if they fully pop within 4.55 seconds of being hit by its shotgun shrapnel. Each explosion deals 5 Fire-type damage, with +15 damage to Ceramic Bloons, to up to 3 Bloons within the radius (unaffected by pierce buffs).

Additionally, this upgrade improves both of its attacks:

  • Increases the pistol's base damage from 18 to 50 and damage to Ceramic Bloons from +18 to +50, and doubles its attack speed (without affecting its 0.1-second burst interval).
  • Increases the shotgun pellets' damage from 3 to 10, grants them +40 damage to MOAB-Class Bloons, and increases their knockback to -300% speed for regular Bloons and -200% speed for MOAB-Class Bloons.
  • Increases the shotgun shrapnel's damage from 1 to 3, and grants them damage over time that deals 10 Fire-type damage, and +10 damage to MOAB-Class Bloons, every 1.5 seconds for 9 seconds. Quickdraw causes the shrapnel to also deal +10 damage to Ceramic Bloons.

Strategy

The Desperado is useful for early game, even on many hard maps. Two Desperados or a Dart Monkey and a Desperado are viable starting choices for CHIMPS runs, and the Desperado's high range and perfect targeting can make these starts very consistent and easy to pull off compared to other options. Base Desperados can be used to chip strong bloons and snipe strays, using mostly Strong and First targeting. They also work as "spotters" for Advanced Intel Monkey Subs due to their large range and cheap Camo detection upgrade.

The top path focuses on single-target damage with the pistol attack. Compared to bottom path Sniper, top path Desperado can get higher DPS, much higher with Bounty Hunter support, but with limited range. The Blazing Sun is a strong, cheap option for T1 bosses.

The middle path focuses more on long range group damage with a rifle. Deadeye and Bounty Hunter offer mid-game support against Ceramics, Take Aim, and Bounty Hunter marking beefy single target blimps to double all Desperado damage against them. Golden Justice does incredible damage with infinite pierce, but its slow attack speed requires cleanup support.

The bottom path focuses on crowd control using a short range shotgun. It has high group damage and knockback, but is weak against single targets and DDTs, and it needs cleanup support to cover its slow attack speed.

Development

[edit | edit source]

The Desperado was originally planned to be released alongside the Frontier Legends DLC (while it was still named Desperado Legends);[2] however, due changes in the game's development pipeline, Ninja Kiwi decided to release the tower first and release the DLC towards the end of 2025.[3]

“
The Desperado Monkey Tower, while thematically aligned with Frontier Legends, will still drop in June. Desperado is just too cool to hold back, with three very distinct paths, weapons, and play styles, so we are super excited to get them into play this northern hemisphere summer, currently planned for mid-June. Of course, Desperado will have a fun role to play in Frontier Legends, but there will be a new sheriff in town when that drops.
— Update notes for version 48.0[3]
”
“
This Monkey is a gun-slinging, Bloon-poppin’ buccaroo. Starting with a humble pistol, each path upgrades into a different weapon alongside the pistol, giving significant variety to play style and effectiveness against different Bloons. Range factors strongly into each path, emphasizing the characteristics of each path’s weapon upgrade. Design and implementation on this new tower is moving ahead strongly, it has already been in testing and balance loops for a couple of weeks, and we are concentrating on how that balance flows through into all game modes. We are genuinely excited about how awesome this tower is looking and playing!
