Blooncyclopedia:Article titles
These guidelines outline the process of assigning articles a title.
Sources of names
This is a list of acceptable sources for article names, in order of priority. The title of the article should be from whichever source has the highest priority, and any additional names should be listed within the article's lede. Example: "Skull Peak (called Mountain Skull Peak in some achievement names) is a track in Bloons TD 5." In general, if the source is not directly from the game itself, then a citation must be provided, though if the name in the game itself is difficult to see or permanently missable on a save file, then it should also be cited.
- Names provided by in-game text. If multiple names are given, generally the most prominent name and/or least ambiguous name are used, though this may be determined on a case-by-case basis.
- If a name is only given in a non-English language, then the name should be a romanization and the article should be tagged with
{{foreign name}}. This mostly only applies to content exclusive to the Chinese version of Bloons TD 6.
- If a name is only given in a non-English language, then the name should be a romanization and the article should be tagged with
- Names given in official descriptions outside the game, such as Ninja Kiwi's website and Google Play Store pages.
- Names given in official patch notes.
- If the subject has a different in-game name from the patch notes, then the name given in the patch notes should be listed as an alternative in the lead section and redirects should be created. Example: "Bot Factory (called Bloon Bot Factory in the patch notes) is a map in Bloons TD Battles 2, introduced in version 1.8."
- Names given on some other official website or social media page, such Ninja Kiwi's Twitter/X and Facebook pages, except the Ninja Kiwi Blog (see below).
- Names given in the Ninja Kiwi Blog. This is considered a lower priority source because the blog is more casual and prone to errors.
- Names from internal data, provided name is consistent and distinct. For example, Golem is used because the name is distinct from the names of other similar subjects, while the internal names of the maps in Bloons Monkey City are not used because they are inconsistent and indistinct. Articles or sections with titles derived from internal data should be tagged with
{{internal name}}.
If the subject needs a name and all else fails, the subject should be given a conjectural name by the community. If there is already a generally accepted community-created name for the subject (i.e. Red Bloon second), then it should be used; otherwise, the name is up to the editor. Conjectural names should be straightforward and follow the title formatting guidelines (see below). Articles or sections with conjectural titles should be tagged with {{conjectural name}}.
The following are not considered acceptable sources for names:
- Unofficial statements from Ninja Kiwi staff members
- Moderators of official social media outlets (i.e. subreddits and the Ninja Kiwi Discord server) who are otherwise not affiliated with Ninja Kiwi
Title formatting
- If the subject has a name that is consistently formatted in a specific way, then the title should be transcribed exactly as written, including any spelling errors, capitalization inconsistencies, unusual punctuation, etc. This mainly applies to the names of towers, upgrades, items, locations, and game modes.
- Cases where the formatting of the subject's name is ambiguous should be ignored. For example, the names of all maps in some versions of Bloons TD 5 are written in all caps on the selection menu and in the game's data, but other places in the game, such as the names of achievements, use more standard capitalization, so those are used as the basis for the articles' capitalization instead.
- If all instances of the subject's name have ambiguous capitalization when viewed in-game (i.e. weapons in the mobile version of Bloons Supermonkey 2, which are written in a font that does not distinguish between letter casings), then the article's title should be written in title case regardless of how the names are formatted internally.
- For other subjects, such as game mechanics and terminology, titles should:
- Be singular, not plural.
- Not start with "the", "a", or "an".
- Use the infinitive form if it is a verb (i.e. Sell instead of selling, Crosspath instead of crosspathing).
- Be written in sentence case, with only the first word and proper nouns capitalized. For example, Boss Bloon and Activated Ability are usually treated as proper nouns, so all words in their titles are capitalised, but Damage type and Map border are not proper nouns, so only the first words in their titles are capitalised (this is done automatically by the software this wiki uses).
- Titles for articles about a subject in one specific game/title should use their name in that game/title, while articles about subjects in general should use the most recent name. For example, the article about the Wizard Monkey in general is named Wizard Monkey, but the article about its appearance in BTD5 is named Monkey Apprentice (BTD5).
- If the subject's name is different between versions, names in the mobile and/or PC versions take priority. For example, Bee Keeper (BTD5) is named "Beekeeper" in BTD5 (Flash) and BTD5 Deluxe, but is named "Bee Keeper" in the mobile, PC, and console versions, so the name in those versions is used.
Identifiers
Identifiers are those words or abbreviations in parentheses used to distinguish subjects with the same or similar names.
- In general, if two different subjects share the same name (or the name is only different in capitalization or punctuation, such as Super Monkey (BTD6) and Supermonkey (BATTD)), then both subjects are given an identifier. If one subject is clearly more popular than the other, such as Down the Drain and Down the Drain (level), then the more popular subject does not need an identifier.
- Typically, subjects are distinguished either with abbreviations of the games/titles they appear in (e.g., Quincy (BTD6), Quincy (Bloons Pop!), and Quincy (Battles 2)), or by what kind of thing the subject is (e.g., Garlic Bomb (upgrade) and Garlic Bomb (weapon)). In rare cases, the subjects may need to be distinguished by some other factor (e.g., Twin Darts (tier 2) and Twin Darts (tier 6)), or have multiple identifiers (e.g., Double Shot (BTD6) (Monkey Buccaneer) and Double Shot (BTD6) (Ninja Monkey)).
- Like titles, identifiers should not be capitalized unless they are proper nouns.
Lists
An article's title should be formatted as "List of X" if either:
- The subject is a generic concept and does not need to be defined or explained in the context of Bloons (e.g., List of voice actors in the Bloons franchise and List of non-playable characters)
- The subject is defined or explained elsewhere on this wiki and the article is just a list (e.g., List of upgrades in BTD6 and List of achievements in BMC)
