Introduced Version 20.0

Etienne is a Hero in Bloons TD 6, introduced in version 20.0. He can be unlocked for Monkey Money 5,000 starting at level 25.

Etienne does not attack directly, instead controlling drones that seek out Bloons and shoot darts at them. The drones operate similarly to Heli Pilots on Pursuit, being able to fly over line of sight blockers, but they can only target and pursue Bloons inside Etienne's range. Etienne starts with one drone and gains more as he levels up, up to a maximum of four at levels 19 and 20. Starting at level 8, he gains a UAV that flies around the map in a circle and grants Camo detection to all towers, akin to a global Radar Scanner. His Drone Swarm ability summons four additional drones for a short time, and his UCAV ability temporarily converts the UAV into a combat vehicle that fires swarms of homing missiles. At level 20, the UAV becomes a UCAV permanently, and the ability instead increases the UCAV's pierce and damage and allows it to pop all Bloon types temporarily. His main drawback is that he cannot pop Lead Bloons without the UCAV and cannot pop DDTs at all until level 20.

Mechanics

Drones

Etienne uses Drones for his attacks. Each drone moves within Etienne's attack range, and will move to a random position if no targets are available, but will attempt to move in front of the target if possible. Etienne starts with one drone, unlocks his second at level 7, his third at level 11, and his fourth at level 19. The targeting of the drones depends on Etienne's targeting and is indicated by color of the triangle-shaped light. (For ETn, the color of the UFOs' eyes change, and for Book Wyrm, the color of the dragons' eyes change.)

  • First — all on First
  • Divide And Conquer — Strong, First, Strong, First (unlocked at level 7)
  • Zone Defense — First, Strong, Last, Close (unlocked at level 11)

Targeting is assigned to the drones in the order they were unlocked in. For example, on Divide and Conquer, the initial drone and the level 11 drone target Strong, while the level 7 and level 19 drones target First.

UAV

UAV is unlocked at level 8. Etienne deploys a UAV that grants Camo detection to all towers on the map. It visually flies around the map in an anti-clockwise circle, but this is purely cosmetic when the UCAV ability is not in effect. The buff functions identically to Radar Scanner and can be disabled by Phayze.

Abilities

Drone Swarm

Drone Swarm is unlocked at Level 3. Etienne spawns four additional drones that have a short delay before they start moving and attacking and last for a short time. These drones share the same behavior and stats as the permanent drones at Etienne's current level, but have their own targeting settings that cannot be changed: one is on First, one is on Last, and two are on Strong. These drones last longer as Etienne levels up, initially lasting for 18.5 seconds at level 3 and increasing by 0.5 seconds per level, up to 27 seconds at level 20. The ability has a cooldown of 80 seconds, which reduces to 55 seconds at level 6 and 50 seconds at level 16.

UCAV

UCAV is unlocked at level 10. It transforms the UAV into a combat drone that launches volleys of homing missiles for 18 seconds. It initially fires 10 missiles in a circle around itself every 0.6 seconds, and each missile deals 2 explosion-type damage over a small blast radius that can hit up to 25 Bloons at a time. The missiles target First and can target and hit Camo Bloons. It has a 90-second cooldown, which reduces to 75 seconds at level 13. At level 15, the duration is increased to 20 seconds and the missiles' pierce is increased to 30 and damage is increased to 4, and at level 17, the damage is further increased to 7.

At level 20, the UAV is permanently replaced with the UCAV with its stats at level 10. The UCAV ability instead increases the missiles' damage to 12 and allows them to pop all Bloon types for 20 seconds. It does not restore its pierce at levels 15-19.

Stack of Old Nails icon This article or section needs cleanup to improve the way it presents information and/or comply with the style guide. You can help out by editing this article.
The editor who added this notice elaborates: This is too long for a non-main strategy section and is full of flowery and pedantic prose
  • Placement and range: Etienne's Drone management has very high Range, eventually having, at 80 units, the highest Range of any Heroes' default attack capability outside Rosalia and PSi. This can be used to help add consistency to his Drones and especially Drone Swarm while Etienne himself does not obstruct other towers.
  • Drone Swarm as a sudden blockade: Early on, Etienne doesn't have many permanent Drones to work with, and some may say that the ones he has are unimpressive. Drone Swarm can provide the power in numbers to stop even Pink bloons from passing so quickly. Between this and Drone Swarm's high duration, Round 15's covered Yellows and Pinks can be put in check, and Round 36's Pink rush and Camo Regrow Greens can similarly be stopped this way.
  • Leading the Drone Swarm: Drone Swarm has windup that limits its ability to be used in response to a bad situation, and long enough cooldown to limit consecutive use. Fortunately, a little prediction can go a long way, and in some circumstances, Drone Swarm can even wipe out the entirety of Rounds 22 and 23 while still catching Round 24's Camo Green.
  • WARNING: Leads: Etienne is one of the few Heroes with no battle capability against Leads until a higher Level. He must be supported by at least one tower capable of damaging Leads to stand a chance on Round 28. Having Etienne on Divide And Conquer is also ill-advised when Leads are around due to the Strong targeting drone likely precious wasting shots on them.
  • Drone Swarm targets: During the 30s, the higher variety of bloons that involve Damage type can influence what can compromise Etienne's still much needed tower support. Even the Camo Whites at the end of Round 37 may warrant a Drone Swarm if the player is scavenging for Camo detection upgrade skips in anticipation of Etienne's highly appealing Level 8 benefits of global radar, and the Round 38 Leads with active flank support make that much a potential compromise. It's up to the player to deduce and address the worst threats.
  • Drone Swarm's single target capability: While Drone Swarm support diminishes as Etienne gains permanent drones, going from initially quadrupling his power to merely tripling it at Level 7, even the eventual reduction to double power still can add up against lone targets, and what is around will help to puncture the Round 40 MOAB where feasible. It's definitely an option competing with Round 39's Rainbow buddy system.
  • Subtle benefits with Camo crosspaths: Variety is the spice of life. Even with Etienne, Camo crosspaths are bound to involve additional benefits. Some, such as Enhanced Eyesight and Monkey Sense, improve range. Others, such as Cold Snap, have clear benefits such as damaging Leads. Crafty management can reduce the need to think in absolutes even outside the Rounds that have no Camo to begin with.
  • UCAV's occasional power: UCAV is capable of clearing out many bloons at once and keeping the track clear for a good amount of time, but has the limitation of massive cooldown. Even more than with Drone Swarm, if a threat where it could be needed is approaching, failure to handle UCAV with absolute care can lead to disaster. If it still needs to be used on another threat in proximity, such as Round 61's Regrow Zebra flood, initiative and prediction are much desired.
  • Drones as utility attackers: UCAV has the additional weakness of doing no damage to Black or Zebra bloons, with the 2 Damage also turning Rainbows into Black bloons surviving the missiles. Fortunately, Etienne recognizes to alternate between Pierce increases and Damage increase in his drone upgrades. If the drones poke the Black and Zebra bloons, they have done their job. This especially helps Drone Swarm see use against one of Round 63's Ceramic clusters, the first being the furthest from Round 64's quick MOAB parade, in supporting the UCAV against the Lead flood.
  • Drone Swarm as a substitute for UCAV: Drone Swarm won't compare well to UCAV when it comes to the likes of a heavy number of Ceramics, but it can provide a power boost that may still suffice for when one is needed, while keeping the UCAV in reserve for an even more dangerous threat.
  • 80s' lack of Camos: Etienne is actively known for providing all towers with Camo detection, but there isn't a single Camo in sight during Rounds 79 to 89. If Camo crosspath benefits have still been chosen, those Rounds, more than any other, will put a strain on such decisions. On the other hand, making it through those Rounds could open up more possibilities that could even be needed.
  • WARNING: DDTs! DDTs!!!: Etienne's only way to damage DDTs without external aid is by activating UCAV while already at Level 20, likely too little too late. If MIB for simple Damage Type bypass is unavailable or undesired, addressing DDTs takes precedence. Towers that are normally stopped by the Camo in DDT busting, such as Transforming Tonic, can be deployed as necessary to destroy them.
  • Embrittlement boost VS DDTs: Embrittlement, upon landing a hit, removes all of the protective properties of the target for a few precious seconds. This is notable with Etienne, as his non-Level 20 UCAV and even his Drone Swarm can capitalize upon DDTs no longer having any protection on success, with both abilities guaranteed to last for the entire duration of the Round 95 DDT flood.
  • Stall usage workaround with Perma-UCAV: Attempting to stall for ability cooldown by stopping the bloons in front can only do so much with the permanent UCAV destroying them quickly enough. However, deliberate avoidance of Etienne's ability usage to slow down the destruction, as well as directing stall towers away from targeting the front may buy the desired time.

We have to admit there were some mistakes not trusting ourselves as much as we should have due to lackluster initial reception of Etienne (except for you die hard Etienne fans, who we greatly appreciate). He was quickly buffed in the very next update before giving users time to settle and find out just how to use a hero who played so differently and after the resurgence in play with the ETn skin. While we still feel that those changes rather nicely sorted out quality of life issues and we took more time to avoid ping ponging him around, he clearly reigns far too supreme and needs some nerf stick. Rather than removing any of those usability changes we have decided to trim down the power of his very dominant UCAV ability.
