Revision as of 11:56, 31 August 2025 by Qwertyxp2000(talk | contribs)(→Strategy: added a tip about how to micro the mortar, a onesentencer that probably needs work)
The Mortar Monkey slowly shoots mortar shells at the selected target, anywhere on the map, with random deviation around the target. When landing, the shell create a blast, dealing 2 damage to Bloons hit by the blast, up to a pierce cap.
It can be upgraded to increase the size and damage of the explosion as well as creating a stunning effect, increase the attack speed, or gain support options, like burning Bloons and removing properties.
Pop and Awe has permanent rapid attack speed. Pop and Awe Ability: rains explosions over the whole screen, damaging Bloons and stunning them periodically.
Shattering shells strip special Bloon properties off all but the biggest bloons. Burny stuff melts through 5 layers with each shot and burns MOAB-class Bloons for extra damage.

The editor who added this notice elaborates: this should contain a few basic tips, details should be saved for the strategy article. also point out standout towers of each upgrade path
Mortars are flexible at dealing grouped damage on a focused area anywhere on screen, but require micromanagement to fully take advantage of. Regularly adjust the position of the reticle ahead of Bloons, preferably around bends. Being able to be purchased at the start of standard CHIMPS allows it to be an early-game carry on maps with tight bends, such as Dark Path and Glacial Trail. Most of its power come from its Tier 3 and above upgrades, as its lower-tiers are only okay. Striker Jones is its favored Hero for Mortar-centric defense, as he provides them with increased attack speed, black-popping, and other benefits that assist them.
Top path is focused on grouped damage and support via stuns. All of the higher-tiers on this path deal much more damage with Burny Stuff, so should be bought as crosspaths if the map has sufficient length or has wide bends, otherwise middle crosspath is better. They all have Black Bloon weaknesses, making Striker's black-popping buff vital.
Middle path is the speed path, and its higher-tiers lack Black Bloon weaknesses and excel against MOAB-class Bloons. Heavy Shells and above favor stun synergies to maximize damage. Artillery Battery is a powerful mid-game carry, and Pop and Awe has outstanding DPS and grouped damage against all Bloons below BAD.
Bottom path is mostly support-oriented, and its burning damage-over-time from Burny Stuff and above allow the Mortar to spread damage over multiple Bloons. Signal Flare is a reliable long-range decamo, and the blimp defortification from Shattering Shells assists against heavy Fortified rounds. Blooncineration does immense DoT damage, making it suitable as a late-game carry on CHIMPS.

Mortar’s Faster Reload feels like a ‘required’ as a crosspath with Burny Stuff never scaling well on any path but it’s own. We like choices not requirements so to counter this we have made Burny Stuff scale with top-path damage & shifted a small amount of the speed from Faster Reload onto the base mortar and reduced base accuracy considerably. — Update notes
”
Mortar base rate of fire increased ― 2.2s → 2s
Random spread radius increased ― 18 → 30
Note: Random spread with X-X-1 Increased Accuracy is unchanged (8)
We felt like we set up the math quite well with Mortar changes last update, but regardless of this missed shots due to inaccuracy vs. attack speed turned out to be unpopular and impacted the middle path too severely. Fortunately this change led to the community finding some critical bugs in the middle path upgrades there since Mortar’s release! That said, since low tier Mortars were never powerful we chose to leave the speed buff from last update but revert the accuracy nerf. — Update notes
We’re looking to shakeup mortar in a couple small ways this update, along with Striker Jones changes noted further on for ‘multi-mortaring’ synergy. From the base level Mortar has far more pierce than should ever be necessary at low rounds but doesn’t hit beefy enough for the low fire rate, so we are trading up some base pierce for damage, instead moving this lost pierce up into crosspath. — Update notes
”
Explosion: Damage increased ― 1 → 2
Explosion: Pierce reduced ― 40 → 25
Note: Bigger Blast and its subsequent upgrades unchanged
Mortar Monkey’s base price has been reduced to make it a possible starting tower, if you really want to try that. While it’s still not intended to be a great starter we hope that having the extra option will be fun. — Update notes
