Introduced Version 50.0

Silas is a Hero in Bloons TD 6 introduced in version 50.0. He can be unlocked for Monkey Money 5,000 starting at level 25.

Silas attacks by casting ricocheting ice orbs that seek out Bloons, which can either cover Bloons in rime that slows them and makes them take more damage from ice attacks, freeze Bloons that are already rimed, or generate icy blasts from Bloons that are both rimed and frozen. This attack can detect Camo Bloons, but cannot affect White Bloons, Zebra Bloons, or Purple Bloons normally. The rime explosion can damage Purple Bloons, but not Lead Bloons. Like an Ice Monkey, he is placeable on both land and water, allows land towers to be placed on water near him, passively reduces the speed of nearby Bloons, and cannot be frozen on Glacial Trail. He has a circular footprint of 6 units, slightly smaller than most Heroes. As he levels up, his rime explosions deal more damage, his slowing aura slows Bloons more, and he unlocks more ways of slowing Bloons, synergizing with Ice Monkeys, and buffing other towers' ice and freezing attacks and the damage they deal to frozen Bloons.

  • Starting at level 2, he causes nearby Ice Monkeys to generate orbiting Ice Fragments when they attack. At higher levels, Ice Fragments have more pierce and deal more damage to frozen Bloons, and he allows higher-tier Ice Monkeys to have more Ice Fragments at a time.
  • Starting at level 4, he periodically places Ice Walls on the track that freeze Bloons on contact, including MOAB-Class Bloons. At higher levels, they last longer and can freeze more Bloons.
  • Starting at level 5, he buffs the freeze duration of other towers and causes all ice attacks to have a 50% chance to ignore White Bloon immunities, which becomes guaranteed starting at level 13.
  • Starting at level 6, his main attack can target Bloons within range of any Ice Monkey on the map, similar to Advanced Intel.
  • Starting at level 8, he buffs the range of all Ice Monkeys on the map and gains 5% (up to a maximum of 50%) more XP per round depending on the number of tier 3 or above Ice Monkeys on the map.
  • Starting at level 13, he provides a 15% discount to tier 5 Ice Monkey upgrades and allows the player to have two Ice Monkeys with the same tier 5 upgrade.
  • He has three Activated Abilities:
    • Frostbite (level 3) — For a short time, allows Silas to damage any Bloon type and increases the damage he deals to frozen Bloons based on their remaining freeze time.
    • Frozen Cascade (level 7) — Causes Silas and up to nine Ice Monkeys on the map to emit blasts of ice that damage and freeze Bloons.
    • Frozen Burial (level 10) — Triggers a Snowstorm-like attack that damages and freezes all Bloons, dealing much more damage to already frozen Bloons, then distributes Ice Walls over the entire track.

Mechanics

Main attack

Silas using his main attack

Silas's main attack creates an orb of magical ice and then launches it towards its target. The orb has 10 pierce, seeks out Bloons, accelerates over time, and can pass through line of sight blockers (though Silas cannot target Bloons behind blockers). It has a slow turning speed, but if it hits a Bloon, it instantly turns towards the next closest Bloon, similar to a ricocheting attack. It has Camo detection by default, an attack cooldown of 1.4 seconds, a delay of 0.5 seconds before launching, a range of 1-55 units and a lifespan of 2.5 seconds. On contact, the orb has a different effect depending on the Bloon's state:

  • If not rimed, it rimes the Bloon.
  • If rimed, it freezes 3 layers of the Bloon for 2.5 seconds.
  • If rimed and frozen, it generates an explosion that deals 1 Cold-type damage and has 3 pierce, a radius of 12 units and deals +1 additional damage to already frozen Bloons caught in the explosion.

Rime is a status effect unique to Silas's main attack that visually covers Bloons in ice crystals. It slows regular Bloons by 50% and MOAB-Class Bloons by 5%, and causes them to take +1 damage from attacks that deal Cold, Frigid, Shatter, or Glacier-type damage. It does not affect BADs or Boss Bloons. While the attack does not freeze rimed MOAB-Class Bloons, they do still count as frozen for the purposes of generating explosions when hit by the attack again.

This attack deals no base damage, but it is considered to have the Frigid damage type (allowing it to deal damage to Bloons afflicted with rime) and it can receive damage buffs. In this case the freeze effect is applied after the damage is dealt.

The bonus damage of rime and the explosion stack with each other, for example if Silas targets an already frozen Bloon, it will first deal 1 damage to the target (0 base, +1 from rime) and then the explosion deals 3 more damage (1 base, +1 from rime and +1 from explosion bonus).

Levels
Level Effect
6 Silas can now target Bloons within range of all Ice Monkeys on the map. Unlike Advanced Intel, he can target Bloons that are not visible from his own line of sight when using an Ice Monkey's range. When targeting a Bloon from an Ice Monkey's range, the orb emits from that Ice Monkey instead of Silas.
12 Rime explosion damage increases to 5.
16 Rime explosion damage increases to 10.
18 Rime explosion damage increases to 20. Rime damage modifier increases to +5.

Arctic Wind

Silas has an Arctic Wind-like aura that slows Bloons by 15% and allows land towers to be placed on water within its radius of 30 units. It does not affect White Bloons or Zebra Bloons at all (even at levels 15+), and does not affect MOAB-Class Bloons until later levels. Unlike Arctic Wind, his Arctic Wind radius does not scale in size with range modifiers.

Levels
Level Effect
11 Now slows regular Bloons by 20% and MOAB-Class Bloons by 10%.
18 Now slows regular Bloons by 30% and MOAB-Class Bloons by 15%.

Ice Fragments

An Ice Monkey with an Ice Fragment

Starting at level 2, Silas provides a buff to Ice Monkeys within his range that causes them to produce one Ice Fragment each time they attack. Each Ice Fragment slowly orbits the Ice Monkey that created it clockwise and damages Bloons on contact, similar to Mystic Twister. Each Ice Monkey can have up to three Ice Fragments at once. They have 6 pierce, deal 1 Frigid-type damage, deal +1 damage to frozen Bloons, and can re-hit Bloons they have already hit after 1 second. They last for 10 seconds and do not disappear on contact with a wall.

Levels
Level Effect
9 Pierce increases to 12. Damage to frozen Bloons increases to +3.
14 Lifespan increased to 17 seconds. Tier 2 and above Ice Monkeys can have up to six Ice Fragments at once. The fourth, fifth, and sixth Ice Fragments orbit anti-clockwise at a faster speed in a larger radius.
16 Pierce increases to 18. Damage to frozen Bloons increases to +6.
17 Lifespan increased to 24 seconds. Tier 3 and above Ice Monkeys can have up to nine Ice Fragments at once. The seventh, eighth, and ninth Ice Fragments orbit clockwise at an even faster speed in an even larger radius.
19 Pierce increases to 24. Damage to frozen Bloons increases to +8.

Ice Walls

Silas creating Ice Walls

At level 4, Silas gains an attack that creates Ice Walls at random points on the track within 45 units every 10 seconds, and will prioritize active lanes. On contact with a Bloon, an Ice Wall inflicts knockback and freezes 10 layers for 3 seconds (1 second for MOAB-Class) and can re-hit Bloons it has already hit after 3 seconds. Each Ice Wall has 15 pierce (though MOAB-Class Bloons consume 30 pierce), lasts for 15 seconds, and can carry over 1 round. It can hit Camo Bloons, but cannot collide with White Bloons, Zebra Bloons, Lead Bloons, DDTs, BADs, or Boss Bloons, even if Silas is given a buff that allows him to damage those Bloon types. Ice Walls do not disappear if Silas is sold.

Levels
Level Effect
12 Lifespan increases to 20 seconds. Pierce increases to 30. MOABs now consume 5 pierce and BFBs now consume 15 pierce. (ZOMGs still consume 30 pierce.)
13 Now collides with and affects White Bloons and Zebra Bloons.
19 Lifespan increases to 30 seconds. Pierce increases to 60.
20 Attack cooldown reduces from 10 seconds to 5 seconds, effectively doubling the rate Silas spawns Ice Walls at.

White Bloon debuffs

At Level 5, Silas produces a map-wide affect that gives Cold, Glacier, and Frigid attacks a 50% chance to ignore the immunities of White and Zebra Bloons, working in the same way Striker Jones does for Black Bloons. This chance is applied separately for each Bloon, so, for example, a freezing shot that hits two White Bloons may damage one White Bloon but not the other. The immunity is completely removed starting at level 13.

Global-range buffs

This section is in need of research. You can help out by editing this article or discussing your findings on the talk page.
The editor who added this notice elaborates:
  • Verify if you can buy a combination of multiple different T5 Ices (e.g. 2 AZs, 2 Impales, and 4 Sbrits) in 4player coop. If so, show a screenshot of this.
  • Verify the Co-Op interaction and granting of extra T5. Does it apply to all players with one Silas lvl13+? Does it only apply to owner? (There are challenge posts where on silas lvl13+ worked in coop, but that's reload due to servers, isn't it?)
  • At level 5, Silas unlocks a global-range buff that increases the freeze duration of other towers (not himself) by +50%, increasing to +200% at level 20. It affects Ice Monkeys, Ball Lightning, Monarch of Storms, Tidal Chill, Riptide Champion, Arctic Knight, Popseidon, and Cold Sentries from Sentry Expert.
  • At level 8, Silas unlocks a buff that increases the range of all Ice Monkeys on the map by a flat +5 units.
  • At level 13, Silas unlocks a buff that applies a 15% discount to tier 5 upgrades for all Ice Monkeys on the map, and allows the player to have two Ice Monkeys with the same tier 5 upgrade at once (similar to Master Double Cross Master Double Cross, but the player can choose any upgrade path). In Co-Op, this benefit does not share to other players. Due to a bug, Silas allows any Tier 4 Ice Monkey to be upgraded to Tier 5 with up to four Tier 5 Ice Monkeys per player.

Extra XP

Starting at level 8, Silas gains 5% more XP every round for every tier 3 and above Ice Monkey on the map, capped at 50% more.

Abilities

Frostbite

This section is in need of research. You can help out by editing this article or discussing your findings on the talk page.
The editor who added this notice elaborates: Verify if the fractional freeze time rounds up, down, or nearest
Silas activating Frostbite

Frostbite unlocks Level 3. While active, Silas's main attack can damage any Bloon type, and if it hits a frozen Bloon, it deals 10 extra damage per second of freeze time it has remaining, rounded down. It lasts for 8 seconds and has a 30-second cooldown.

Levels
Level Effect
9 Damage per second of freeze time remaining increases to 15.
15 Duration increases to 12 seconds. Damage per second of freeze time remaining increases to 25.
20 Damage per second of freeze time remaining increases to 50.

Frozen Cascade

Silas activating Frozen Cascade

Frozen Cascade unlocks at level 7. Upon activation, Silas emits a blast of ice, then up to 9 Ice Monkeys (prioritizing the nearest ones first) emit a blast of ice after a delay based on their distance from Silas. The blast has a radius of 40 units, 45 pierce, deals 20 Shatter-type damage, deals +15 damage to frozen Bloons, and freezes 10 layers for 9 seconds (without affecting MOAB-Class Bloons). Starting at level 15, the bonus Frozen damage increases to +30. It has a 60-second cooldown and is decreased to 45 seconds starting a level 15.

Frozen Burial

Silas activating Frozen Burial

Frozen Burial unlocks at level 10. Upon activation, Silas triggers a snowstorm that hits all Bloons on-screen, which deals 1 Glacier-type damage, deals +80 damage to already frozen Bloons, and freezes 10 layers for 6 seconds (3 seconds for MOAB-Class Bloons), then, after a 0.5-second delay, places Ice Walls at evenly-spaced intervals across the entire track. It has a 90-second cooldown.

Starting at level 15, it deals +200 damage to frozen instead of +60 and its cooldown is reduced to 75 seconds.

Levels

Level Description
1 Silas attacks with magical ice. Hit Bloons are rimed. Already rimed Bloons are frozen. Already rimed and frozen Bloons burst in an icy explosion. Bloons are slowed near Silas.
2 Ice Monkeys in radius create orbiting Ice Fragment projectiles when they attack.
3 Frostbite ability: Silas can hit all Bloons while active. When hitting frozen Bloons, target takes extra damage based on remaining freeze time.
4 Ice Walls form on the track near Silas. Ice Walls push back and freeze Bloons. MOABs are frozen for less time.
5 White Bloons are less resistant to Ice attacks. Monkeys that freeze Bloons freeze them for longer.
6 Silas can attack Bloons in the range of Ice Monkeys anywhere.
7 Frozen Cascade ability: Creates a shattering blast of ice around Silas then other Ice Monkeys spreading out from Silas. Frozen Bloons take extra damage from ability.
8 Buffs the ranges of all Ice Monkeys & grants more Hero XP for each Tier 3 Ice Monkey.
9 Frozen Bloons damaged during Frostbite take more damage. Ice Fragment damage & pierce increased.
10 Frozen Burial ability: Immediately freezes and damages all Bloons, dealing far more damage to already frozen Bloons. Then fills the track with Ice Walls.
11 Slowing aura around Silas slows Bloons more, and can slow MOABs.
12 Ice Walls can hit more Bloons and last longer. Rime explosion does more damage.
13 Ice Monkey Tier 5s are cheaper, and you can build a 4th Tier 5 of any path. White Bloons lose all resistance to Ice attacks.
14 Ice Monkeys create more orbiting Ice Fragments when they attack.
15 Frozen Bloons take more damage from all abilities. Frostbite lasts longer, and Frozen Cascade and Frozen Burial have shorter cooldowns.
16 Rime explosion does even more damage, and orbiting Ice Fragments do more damage to frozen Bloons.
17 Tier 3 Ice Monkeys create even more orbiting Ice Fragments.
18 Slowing aura around Silas slows Bloons even more. Rimed Bloons take even more damage from Ice attacks, rime explosion damage increased even further.
19 Ice Walls have more pierce & lifespan. Ice Fragments pierce more and deal even more damage to frozen Bloons[sic]
20 Frozen Bloons take even more damage during Frostbite. Silas creates Ice Walls more often. Monkeys that freeze Bloons freeze them yet longer again.

Strategy

See the strategy guidelines for more information on how to write strategy sections.
The editor who added this notice elaborates: How would you position Silas? On a place with wide coverage? How important is his innate awind? Do you only position his awind relative to mutually exclusive benefits? (Someone on quad put him in pond to consistent silas ice walls)
This section was last updated for: version 52.0

Silas is an effective Hero when synergizing with Ice Monkeys, providing Frozen Bloons that let him deal damage easier, and improving his abilities, leveling, and defense. It takes time for him to rime the Bloons so he can deal damage, and this combined with his slow attack and projectile speed gives him a difficult early game. In many cases, he actively makes the earlier rounds harder, because many early-game towers lack frozen popping power. However, he provides some good value with his Arctic Wind aura and camo detection, allowing for better tower placements on Flooded Valley and #Ouch earlier on and saving money this way. Place him where he can cover enough track area at the edge of his range while staying close enough on the track to make use of his slowdown aura.

He is not as effective as a standalone tower in the mid game before he gains his most powerful ability at level 10. With good timing Frostbite can one shot the children of early MOABs, and can deal decent damage at a high enough level. Frozen Cascade does not do meaningful damage, unless surrounded by many Ice Monkeys, but can clean up leaking bloons. Frozen Burial, however, is very powerful, as it is essentially a stronger Absolute Zero ability with a longer cooldown. Using this ability properly is essential for beating both the dense and the DDT rounds. But despite this, they are all useless against the BAD.

Icicles is one of the best mid game options for Silas since he removes its biggest weakness and has value as Ceramic control in the late game. Absolute Zero also works great as a general utility tower, but it should only be purchased once Silas reaches level 13 for the T5 discount. A second tier 5 Ice Monkey can be considered on maps with separated lanes, but is usually not worth the cost for CHIMPS due to their weaknesses to BADs, unless it's double Super Brittle. Avoid focusing defense entirely on Ice Monkeys because of the lack of single target damage. Silas should be paired with towers that can effectively deal with the BAD, such as Carpet of Spikes, First Strike Capability, and MOAB Eliminator. If using Super Brittle, use its Bloon debuffs to cover BAD damage with fast-attacking towers. Whatever weaknesses the main DPS tower has can be easily covered by Ice Monkeys.

Silas works well in the Golden Bloon event, especially for the Magical Gold achievement where Ice Monkeys are inaccessible. He stands out on Glacial Trail since he is immune to the freezing gimmick.

This update resolved an issue where Silas’ Rime slow was only applying a reduced slow value to standard MOABs, meaning that all other MOAB-Class Bloons (outside of Bosses and BADs) were being completely slowed by the same amount as standard Bloons. Silas has been incredibly powerful so this fix felt entirely fair as a nerf, however we wanted to clarify this here as we mentioned there was little free time this update to review the impact of said fix in great depth so we may consider reducing the total MOAB penalty at a later date after this has time to settle

Pre-release

Announcement

Silas was announced in the update notes for version 49.0, though it revealed little about him other than that he is a "Vanilla Ice Ice Hero".

Vanilla Ice Ice Hero! While ice powers tend to create bugs galore, the possibilities for fun gameplay are too compelling. Start skating on what you think we'll do with this chilling new Hero.
— 49.0 update notes[1]

Dev Diary #2

The next time that Ninja Kiwi talked about Silas was in the BTD6 Dev Diary #2[2], although the new information was limited as the post focused on the new map Lost Crevasse.

This cool cavern was inspired by our new upcoming ice hero, you may have heard about around the banana stands.
A secluded place that the ice hero enjoys visiting during his time wandering [...] Large ice crystals separate potential tower placement, if only there were a new ability that could help overcome this hurdle...
— BTD6 Dev Diary #2[2]

The "new ability that could help overcome this hurdle" may refer to Silas's mechanic of emitting his attack from other Ice Monkeys, though it did not ignore line of sight blockers until a bug fix in version 50.2.

TikTok teasers

Ninja Kiwi released multiple short teaser videos on their TikTok page where they attempt to conduct an interview with Silas, who hides in the company office's refrigerator before running off into the mountains, with the final video showing his unlock splash screen. These videos also revealed the gift codes SILAS and ICEBLOCK.
