The card list in the Collection, showing cards the player does and does not own

Cards are the core gameplay mechanic of Bloons Card Storm. They come in three major card types: Monkey cards, Bloon cards, and Power cards. Each player has a deck that consists of exactly 40 cards. Players can obtain more cards primarily by crafting them with Tokens or by opening Card Packs. A player can own up to three copies of each card (except Unique cards, which only allow the player to create one copy). Cards a player owns are stored in the Card Collection menu.

At the start of each match, but before the first turn, each player draws their starting hand from their deck. The player that will go first draws 3 cards, while the other player draws 4 cards. Before the first turn, each player can mulligan one card in their starting hand up to three times (or five times in some singleplayer modes). During a match, players can play cards during their turn (and only on their turn). Some cards can also be played by the Storm or by using Hero Abilities. At the start of each turn (including the first turn, after the starting hands are drawn), the turn player draws one card (unless their hand is full or their deck is empty).

There are a total of 280 cards. Of these, 17 do not appear in the collection, do not belong to any card sets, and cannot be crafted or added to a normal deck. Most of them are cards created by other cards or Hero Abilities, such as Baby Monkey, which only appears after using Shrink on a Monkey card. Counting copies of cards, there are a maximum of 739 obtainable cards.

Terminology

  • A player's deck consists of one Hero and the set of cards the player starts with during a match. During a match, the cards in the deck, and their order, is not visible to either player, but the number of cards in the deck is. The owner of a deck can see and change which cards are in it outside of a match.
  • A player's hand is the set of cards the player can play. Each player can have up to 8 cards in their hand at a time and cannot draw or add cards to their hand if it would exceed the limit. Cards in a player's hand are visible to the owner, but not the opponent. The number of cards in a hand is visible to both players.
  • To draw a card is to take the top card from the player's deck and move it to their hand. Some cards can draw specific kinds of cards from the deck, such as the Signal Bloon always drawing Large Bloons, which are not necessarily drawn from the top of the deck. If an effect draws a specific kind of card, but no card with that qualifier exists in the deck, no card is drawn.
  • To add a card is to generate a new card in the player's hand. This card only exists for the remainder of the match and does not enter the player's Collection when the match ends.
  • To play a card is to drag it onto the map to activate it. Played cards are visible to both players.
  • A player's graveyard is where Monkey and Bloon cards the player controls go when they are destroyed (unless stated otherwise, such as by Undead Bloons). Some cards' effects use cards in the graveyard, such as Bloon Amalgamation. The cards in a player's graveyard are not visible to either player, but the number of Bloon and Monkey cards in a player's graveyard are visible to that player only.

Keywords

Keywords are terms used to describe certain mechanics, card effects, or effect conditions. The player can see a card's keywords when viewing a card in the Collection and during a match. Each keyword has an icon, which is displayed next to the Monkey or Bloon during a match at all times.

Card attributes

Cards have different attributes depending on the type of card. All cards have the following attributes:

  • Cost: The resources the player has to spend in order to play the card. This is usually an amount of Gold ranging from 0 to 20, but some cards cost Bloontonium instead.
  • Charges: Some cards can be played more than once before being consumed, indicated by the number of coins under the Gold cost. All cards with multiple charges are cards that cost Gold. Charges range from 1 to 4, though cards with more than three charges are indicated with only three coins and a "+" icon. This attribute was originally exclusive to Bloon cards before Monkey and Power cards with more than one charge were introduced in version 2.0.
  • Class: Each type of card has three or four different classes. The class determines what kind of tokens are required to craft the card. Some cards have effects that depend on class, such as the Crippling Sniper only applying its effect to Large-class Bloons.
  • Rarity: Cards can be either Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, or Ultra Rare. It determines how many Tokens are required to craft the card, and some cards can only draw cards of a certain rarity.

Card backs

Card Backs are cosmetic items that customize the back face of each card in a deck. During a match, card backs are visible while a card is being played and in the opponent's hand.

Sometimes, certain cards may not necessarily match the player's selected card back for their deck. If a player uses Expert Negotiator on a tower, then uses Return to Sender on that same card, they will have the card back of the opponent for that card specifically. The Storm always uses the default card back.

Bloons

Bloon cards are the main way of attacking the opponent. They come in three classes: Basic, Advanced, and Large. Most Bloons have a Delay stat that determines how many turns the opponent has to defend and a Health stat that determines both how much damage the Bloon can take and deal. The turn delay decrements at the end of the player's turn and attacks the opponent if it reaches zero, dealing as much damage as it has health remaining. Playing a Bloon card also generates Bloontonium equal to the card's Gold cost. Each player can have up to 8 Bloons in play at a time, and more Bloons cannot be played if the player's side is full.

Monkeys

Monkey cards are the main way of defending against Bloons. They come in four classes: Primary, Military, Magic, and Support. Most Monkeys have an ATK stat that determines how much damage they deal to Bloons, an Ammo stat that determines how many times they can attack before needing to reload, and a Reload stat that determines how many turns it takes to restore their Ammo. Players can spend Ammo to attack their opponent's Bloons at any time during their turn. However, some Monkeys do not attack and instead have effects that support Bloons or other Monkeys. Each player can have up to 5 Monkeys on their side at a time, and existing Monkeys can be replaced by playing new Monkeys if the player's side is full.

Powers

When played, power cards instantly trigger an effect, then are removed from the hand. They come in three classes: Basic, Advanced, and Exotic. Some Powers require a target, such as selecting a Monkey or Bloon, while others have no conditions. Some Powers cost Bloontonium instead of Gold.

Obtaining cards

  • All players start with the 40 cards that make up the Quincy Starter deck. The player also obtains more cards alongside the Gwendolin Starter deck for completing The Basics.
  • The player can spend Tokens to craft copies of any card available in the Collection. The card's class determines which type of Tokens it costs, and its rarity determines the amount of Tokens required.
  • Opening a Card Pack unlocks up to five cards. The player is guaranteed two Commons, two Uncommons, and one Rare, Super Rare, or Ultra Rare per pack. There is a daily Card Pack in the Store that costs Monkey Money that has no duplicate protection, while other Card Packs have duplicate protection and provide cards introduced from specific game versions.
  • Daily Rewards and Ranked rewards include random cards of specific rarities. These cards have no duplicate protection.
  • Some feats and gift codes reward specific cards for claiming them.
