Permafrost is the Ice Monkey's path 1 tier 1 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. It applies permafrost to frozen Bloons, reducing their speed by 50% after they thaw out (60% with So... Cold... So... Cold...). The effect lasts for two layers, although the Ice Monkey's attack usually pops one layer, meaning it effectively applies to two layers only if the top layer has multiple points of health. The freeze has several crosspathing perks:

Strategy

edit
This section was last updated for: version 49.3

Permafrost has strong utility in the form of stalling Super Ceramic Bloons, granting extra time for abilities to recharge, and crosspathing to 1-1-0 enhances its stalling capability further. In addition, the permanent 50% slow to Golden Bloons greatly aids in popping them. When used as a crosspath for Tier 3+ Ice Monkeys, Permafrost is recommended when the Camo detection and Lead & DDT-popping power granted by its succeeding upgrade, Cold Snap, are desired.

  •   Pierce increased ― 30 → 40
1-4-0, 1-5-0
  •   Ability: No longer applies permafrost to MOAB-class (bug fix)
  •   Can now pop Lead Bloons when buffed by Acidic Mixture Dip (bug fix)
1-5-0, 1-0-5
  •   Can now apply permafrost to MOAB-Class Bloons
  •   Now applies the Permafrost effect to White and Zebra Bloons (bug)
    • Note: Unconfirmed
1-5-0
  •   Ability: No longer sometimes applies a weaker version of Permafrost (bug fix)
1-4-0, 1-5-0
  •   Snowstorm Ability: Now applies 50% Permafrost to MOAB-Class bloons (bug)
1-5-0
  •   Permafrost: slowdown to MOABs increased ― 25% → 50% (bug)
1-4-0
  •   Snowstorm ability: No longer applies 50% permafrost to MOABs (bug fix)
1-5-0
  •   Snowstorm ability: Permafrost slow to MOABs increased ― 50% → 75% (bug)
    • Note: Does not apply to base attack
Permafrost was previously reduced to a lower price than we’d like to try increase desirability of this crosspath, but as the reworks to metal freeze have had more success there in pulling this path ahead we want to add a little back on here.
— Update notes
  •   Upgrade cost increased ― $100 → $150
1-5-0
  •   Absolute Zero ability no longer applies an excessively strong permafrost effect ― 75% → 25% (bug fix)
    • Note: 250 unaffected and retain 75% slowdown
Ice Monkey base pierce is too high, very easily countering large numbers of strong Bloons early, mid or late in the game for small investment, leading to very low tiers of ice monkey (below t3) being highly effective spam options over upgrading your ice. We are reworking some of this base pierce to require crosspath investment [...]
— Update notes
  •   Pierce reduced ― 40 → 30 (extra pierce moved to Deep Freeze crosspath)
Lowest tiers of ice monkey are far too effective for their cost against ceramics, with this scaling well all the way to round 100, we feel like ice duration against ceramics needs to be reduced to counter this but for now this reduction will only apply until T3.
— Update notes
  •   Freeze duration: reduced by 50% on ceramics
    • Note: Tier 3s and above unaffected
We’re happier with more recent freeze changes succeeding in some of the intentions of older nerfs, given the base tower value in races being hit far more than intended we’re going back over the pierce for Ice Monkey base & middle crosspath.
— Update notes
  •   Pierce increased ― 30 → 40
  •   105 Icicle Impale should apply icicles correctly again (bug fix)
1-4-0
  •   Damage type ― Shatter → Sharp (undocumented)
    • Note: Causes snowstorm ability to only have 1 pierce and unable to damage bloons
  •   Overall cost reduced by $100 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  •   Can now be placed on water
1-5-0
  •   Arctic Wind: Can slow down small Bloons when crosspathed again (bug fix)
1-0-4
  •   No longer fails to damage the round 40 MOAB in Easy mode (bug fix)
