Ice Shards is the Ice Monkey's path 1 tier 3 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. Bloons frozen by this Ice Monkey will add a "ice shards" status effect that soaks up to two layers, or up to three layers with 3-2-0 crosspath, but will not trigger it from the initial freezing damage. The duration of the "ice shards" is equal to the duration of the freeze. Popping a bloon affected by Ice Shards will produce 3 shards of ice, 120° apart within 360°, and deal 2 damage onto up to 3 bloons. Shards can be affected by external damage buffs but not external pierce buffs. Shards have the shatter damage type, which pops Frozen but not Lead. Only towers that can pop frozen can trigger this ice shards effect, since it requires to pop the bloon layer (given enough attack speed, 3-0-2 ice can pop its own ice shards as well).

Ice Shards additionally gains:

• The ability to permanently removes camo and regrow properties (with the exception of DDTs spawning regrow, but not camo, ceramics) with the freeze attack
• Gains +5 range, from 20 to 25 (27 to 32 with 3-0-1).

Strategy

Ice Shards is outstanding in Race Events and CT Time Attack, where its shards do extraordinary damage when Bloons frozen by it are popped by another tower. Having innate camo detection, a well-timed Ice Shards deals with Camos handily without relying entirely on another Camo popper, solidifying its power in these game modes. However, Ice Shards is rather slow, so it shouldn't be entirely relied on for popping dense clumps.

Outside of Races and CT Time Attack, Ice Shards is far too unreliable and there are usually not enough Bloons for its shards to trigger and perform significant damage. Thus, outside of Races and CT Time Attack, it is only bought as a stepping stone for Embrittlement, which has more reliable popping power, de-leading, and damage debuffs, rather than just de-camo and de-regrow.

For crosspathing, 3-2-0 is the preferred crosspath, as not only does Enhanced Freeze improve its attack speed, Deep Freeze soaks the "ice shards" effect through multiple layers, maximizing the total amount of shards at once. 3-0-2 is rarely useful outside of pairing with other Ice Monkeys, as Ice Shards already gains more range and middle crosspath is still more reliable for spamming Ice Shards.
