Super Maelstrom is the Tack Shooter's path 2 tier 5 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. It upgrades the Blade Maelstrom's ability to last 9 seconds instead of 3, shoot out 4 blades at a time instead of 2, gains +8 bonus Ceramic damage, and increases the pierce of the ability's blades from 100 to 300. Additionally, its regular attack gains +3 additional damage (5 total), +5 bonus Ceramic damage, and its damage type is changed to Normal. These changes do not apply to the ability.

Super Maelstrom Ability

The Super Maelstrom ability has a cooldown of 20 seconds, with an initial cooldown of 6.67 seconds. When activated, it fires out four extra-strong blades per shot in an 360° amgle at rapid rates, while spinning the ejection angles at 360° per second clockwise; this creates a spiral pattern with the ejected blades. The ability lasts for 9 seconds. Each blade deals 2 Shatter damage (+8 bonus damage to ceramics), has 300 pierce, and is fired with an attack cooldown of 0.045 seconds. It can be affected with all types of buffs (e.g. damage, attack speed, pierce).

The ability also receives crosspathing benefits:

  • Faster Shooting — ability gains ~17.6% increased attack speed (0.85x attack cooldown).
  • Even Faster Shooting — ability gains ~38.4% increased attack speed total (0.85x attack cooldown on top, total of 0.7225x).
  • More Tacks — ability gains +1.5s duration and spins counter-clockwise.
  • Even More Tacks — ability gains +3s duration total.

With support for Lead Bloons and Camo detection, Super Maelstrom is a win condition in Race Events. Super Maelstrom transitions smoothly from Blade Maelstrom as it extends the duration of Blade Maelstrom's ability when upgraded from it while the ability is active. 0-5-2 is the preferred crosspath in Race Events because of the longer duration. Super Maelstrom is also powerful against Bloonarius's spawns, especially in Timed settings.

Elsewhere, Super Maelstrom is a below average DPS option that falls off on Expert maps, but fulfills a niche role in cleaning up Super Ceramics for cheaper than most T5s (e.g. The Bloon Solver). In CHIMPS, 2-5-0 and 0-5-2 are equally favorable, with the former having stronger burst damage and the latter being more reliable. It benefits from Primary Mentoring's cooldown reduction; Primary Expertise and Energizer are far too expensive.

Maelstrom upgrades are in a good spot overall, but specifically for the low cost of this tower with such a rapid cooldown it was able to hit too many targets under race conditions. This targeted nerf is to the value of it under those race conditions and should be negligible in other game areas.

Blade Shooter has always struggled to find much value without MK or as a step to Maelstrom, so to give it build value on its own we feel like this should be a part of the base value on the upgrade.

Maelstrom crosspathing? Why not, feels that this could be cool to try out, and more consistency on bottom crosspath may be able to make it the preferred ability crosspath while top path which already improves the base tower more will give back the massive pierce amount for times where the greater punch per use is required.

The recent ability crosspathing for Tack Shooter was fun but feels too lopsided as pierce concerns are very niche on Maelstrom, instead we want to shift this entire focus around for top path to be the rate crosspath for more damage in a shorter amount of time and leaving bottom mainly about greater overall uptime.

As it is primarily a small Bloon cleanup tower path, Super Maelstrom has struggled to keep up in the lategame, mostly because Super Ceramics don’t care how fast you’re spinning if you can’t break them so we’ve added a Ceramic bonus to the attack and ability.
