Abyss Dweller is the Mermonkey's path 1 tier 3 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. The Mermonkey gains an Abyssal Creature, with 8 independent tentacles that slap nearby bloons, alongside the "Abyss Dweller" percentage pierce buff, and increased trident damage.

  • Trident: Damage increased from 2 to 4.
  • Tentacles: 8 independent tentacles, lashing at bloons within the Mermonkey's range. Each tentacle is 45° apart from each other. Tentacles are arranged horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, with a field of vision of 22.5° per side. Tentacles deal 8 damage, have 15 base pierce, attack every 3.0s, a blast radius of 8, and the Shatter damage type. It has an initial cooldown of 0.5s.
    • With the Sharper Prongs crosspath tentacles gain +35% pierce (20.25 instead of 15).
  • Pierce buff: All non-Paragon towers within range, including itself, gain +10% pierce.

Strategy

For its cost, the Abyss Dweller is a decent early-game option for taking down stronger bloons, particularly along a curve or bend, in addition to a minor pierce bonus to nearby towers. It's not particularly impactful of a support tower, but has some synergy with Spike Factory by taking out stronger groups of bloons while the Spike Factory cleans up a little more efficiently. It stands out on Race conditions as a relatively inexpensive early-game carry, particularly on CT Time Attack with certain Relics such as Alchemist Touch. Despite the initial cooldown, the tentacles still provide a significant burst of damage in maps with large loops for Race conditions.

Crosspaths with 3-1-0 are better if camo detection isn't a problem, maximizing pierce, while 3-0-1 is preferred if needing camo detection or if spaced Bloons are a concern. 3-2-0, while it doesn't affect tentacles, clumps up Bloons better. 3-0-2 is very potent for mid-game as it improves coverage of its tentacles and buffs, particularly on maps that would have enough coverage for long tentacles if it would gain full Echosense range buffs.

While we’re not jumping into any full on balance changes, there’s a few corrections that we wanted to make for type-fixes and other intended play.
— Update notes
  •   Tentacle attack: Damage type changed ― Sharp → Shatter
As the middle crosspath is currently less useful for higher tiers, we’ve upgraded Sharper Prongs to improve Tentacle pierce as well. As the main Trident’s damage falls behind and has caused annoying layer skipping for some more observant players the damage of this attack is increasing at T3 & T4. The % pierce buff is being improved at all levels since this has settled without causing too much of a stir [...]
— Update notes
  •   Overall cost reduced by $125 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  •   Trident: damage increased ― 2 → 4
  •   Pierce buff increased ― +5% → +10%
  •   Pierce buff correctly stacks with other pierce buffs (bug fix)
  •   Trident: projectile lifespan increased ― 0.3333s → 0.6667s
3-1-0, 3-2-0
  •   Sharper Prongs now increases pierce of tentacles by 35%
Abyss Dweller is far too inconsistent before it gains the T4 ink attack, so a lot of price is being shifted up out of this update.
— Update notes
  •   Upgrade cost reduced ― $2,100 → $1,300
  •   Upgrade cost increased ― $1,300 → $1,600
    •   Overall cost increased by $50 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  •   Resolved a build order issue that could override higher tier Mermonkey buffs (bug fix)
Abyssal Warrior will now have a slight startup cooldown to limit certain exploity tactics. Middle crosspath trident gains extra projectile pierce to improve early game value.
— Update notes
  •   Tentacle: Now begins with 0.5s initial cooldown
3-1-0
  •   Trident: Pierce increased ― 2 → 3
    • Note: Does not affect splash (6)
    • X-3-X Riptide Champion unchanged (18)
Mermonkey weren’t[sic] feeling they favoured their natural habitat enough, so their Water Placement bonus is getting a boost.
— Update notes
  •   Range bonus when placed in water increased ― +25% → +35%
Last update many players felt blindsided when Brickell stopped applying her buff to Mermonkeys since there was no mention in the balance changes section. We would like to apologize for that - it was tasked internally as a bug as it was indeed unintended to work that way. We then left the issue alone for a long time, mostly due to other more pressing matters, and this issue fell through the cracks. In retrospect, it would have been better to treat this as balance rather than a simple bug fix due to how much time had passed. Reading through your feedback, we did consider just reverting the change, however the bigger issue that the feedback reinforced to us was that players considered Mermonkey to be so bad that it was only a "good" tower when used in combination with a single, water-only hero.

This sort of forced synergy goes against our design intentions - namely that Mermonkey being our signature amphibious tower should be able to stand on its own without being balance-locked to an interaction with a single hero. With all that in mind, we feel Mermonkey's highest priority right now is large sweeping buffs to each of the paths, so most of the following changes are our first step towards this starting from the low tier crosspaths.
— Update notes

  •   Overall cost reduced by $100 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  •   Trident: Attack cooldown reduced ― 0.804s → 0.66s (attack speed increased by 21.82%)
    • Note: Attack cooldown reduction from 1-x-x increased from 18% to 25%. The patch notes do not specify that the attack speed buff is only for the main trident attack, all other attacks unchanged.
  •   Tentacle attack: Pierce reduced ― 24 → 20
3-1-0, 3-2-0
  •   Tentacle attack: Pierce reduced ― 32.4 → 27
Mermonkey ended up somewhat underrated and overbuffed, mid tiers for top and middle paths have really stood out here lately and need to be reigned back in line.
— Update notes
  •   Upgrade cost increased ― $1,600 → $1,800
    •   Overall cost increased by $225 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  •   Tentacle: Now deals +6 damage to Ceramic Bloons
  •   Splash: Radius reduced ― 6 units → 3 units
    • Note: Stacks with X-2-X Tidal Chill ― 9 units → 4.5 units
    • Also affects all crosspaths up to 2-2-2.
  •   Tentacle: Damage decreased ― 9 → 8
  •   Tentacle: Pierce decreased ― 20 → 15
    • Note: Stacks with the 3-1-0 Sharper Prongs crosspath ― 27 → 20.25
  •   Tentacle: No longer deals +6 damage to Ceramic Bloons (bug fix)
    • Note: 4-X-X Abyssal Warrior unchanged (+6)
