Airburst Darts is the Monkey Sub's path 3 tier 2 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. It reduces Monkey Sub's main darts to 1 unbuffable pierce each. However, they instantly split into 3 airburst projectiles (4 projectiles with Quad Burst Quad Burst) upon impact that each each deal 1 damage with 2 pierce (3 with Naval Upgrades Naval Upgrades). These airburst projectiles cannot damage Lead or Frozen Bloons unless the original dart could. The main darts will also automatically "burst" when they expire (this is easiest noticed at the end of rounds), though this (for the most part) doesn't affect gameplay.

With Barbed Darts, airburst darts gain +3 additional pierce.

Strategy

Airburst Darts is a versatile early-game option, being a strong choice on nearly all maps with water. Its early-game power is the most notable on maps with lanes that switch, such as Bloody Puddles and Muddy Puddles. Airburst Darts only struggles to be a carry on maps that go against straight lines, such as Quad.

Advanced Intel is recommended for Airburst Darts in nearly all cases, especially on multi-lane maps, as global reach generally outweighs the benefits of increased pierce and lead-popping.

When used as a crosspath, it is recommended for Ballistic Missile and its succeeding upgrades on maps where their base range partially covers all lanes. Airburst Darts is optional for Bloontonium Reactor and Energizer for extra single-target damage when unsubmerged, and it is not recommended for Submerge and Support.

Previously the rate increase to Ballistic Missile from crosspath was reduced due to Airburst having enough value on it’s own. This reason still applies as Airburst provides a significant power boost just on it’s own, so all rate increase has been removed from Airburst and applied directly to the base Ballistic Missile to help crosspath diversity slightly.

We have come back a number of times to add, fix & balance sub crosspathing, over years of learning though it currently feels messy and we’d like simplification. Heat-Tipped Darts doesn’t increase base sub pierce, so it feels silly to require it for maximum pierce on Submerged subs. Likewise Airburst shouldn’t be required to maximize the rate of submerged subs, instead we’d rather give people an easier way to work with the Airburst attack if they desire to upgrade to it so ‘Submerge’ is moving to a new Tower Special rather than target priority.
