Great White is the Beast Handler's path 1 tier 3 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. The Beast Handler now handles a great white instead of a barracuda. Its Beast Power is increased by +5, changing its Beast Power scale from 3–6 to 8–24.

The Great White jumps out of the water at set intervals, latches onto a Bloon or MOAB-Class Bloon, including Lead Bloons, and thrashes multiple times before returning to the water, as opposed to Barracuda's rate-buffable, single-attack jumps. Thrashes are centered on the Great White. The thrash's damage (2–4 → 12–36), pierce (4–12 → 10–30), and radius (8 → 15) are all improved. Thrashes can be affected by all external buffs. Thrashes occur every 0.6 seconds and do not trigger immediately after grabbing. Merges increase the thrash's damage, pierce, attack cooldown, and knockback duration. The Great White itself has 40 range instead of 35.

If the target can be one-shot, the Great White drags it into the water; the target is immediately popped while the Great White moves at a constant speed towards the location it jumped from. If it cannot be one-shot, the Great White latches onto it for up to 3 seconds before disappearing.

Mechanics

Unlike previous tier, each attack now follows this order:

  1. Takes 0.4 seconds to jump to the target.
  2. Creates a splash that creates knockback effect when touching the target.
  3. If the target is a regular Bloon and has 1,000,000 RBE or less (ignores fortification), the shark will drag it to the water, or latches onto it for 3 seconds.
    • The dragging time is based on the Bloon's leak damage (leakDamage+14) and Lead Bloon takes an additional 0.5 seconds. However, there is a 1-second minimum dragging time for any type of Bloons.
    • While being latched, the target is slowed by 40%.

During dragging or latching, the shark creates splash that deals damage and knockbacks Bloons every 0.6 seconds. The splash has 15 radius and 10 base pierce. All merge benefits improve the pierce, attack speed, and damage of the splashes. Unlike the other beasts, sharks use the thrash cooldown to calculate the thrash rate (for further information, see this link).

There is also a 1.1-second delay after dragging or latching before the next jump, which is unaffected by merging or external buffs.

At max beast power, the shark can take 6 seconds to drag a MOAB instead of just latching onto it.

Low-power Great White is good for Round 40, but is a downgrade compared to Power 6 Barracuda in many cases due to its downtime, taking a long time after each jump compared to Barracuda's constant attacks. Power 24 Great White is powerful for the mid-game, dragging in blue MOABs while its thrash largely wipes out everything nearby in addition to breaking down higher-tier blimps well. However, its downtime means that it is still inconsistent, requiring another tower to clean up Bloons while it remains in the water.

Merging into the Great White is recommended, compensating its downtime with high grouped damage. Power 12 is enough to one-shot Ceramics, and Power 19 for Fortified Ceramics, however the main benefits for merges to Great White are increased attack speed and pierce. Power 24's blue MOAB one-shot is a major upgrade; the slower takedowns on blue MOABs allow the shark to splash for longer, in addition to eliminating individual blue MOABs. Merging with two Great Whites saves the most money.

Beast Handler’s general repositioning feels far too free right now, the reposition cooldown is being increased to a more reasonably noticeable number so this feels like a meaningful cost. [...] Great White lacks a lot of pierce for an upgrade with a slower widespread AoE design for the price range.

When first creating Beast Handler we balanced the T1-3 upgrade costs with a goal of creating a decision point between spending free playable space to save on cash or spending more cash to save on playable space. However in practice though some people have come on board with spending their playable space as a resource for more power; actual interest is much more divided between maximizing cost efficiency of these merges or simply using different towers. Given that spam of lower tier handlers already comes with the advantage of allowing them to be repositioned over a larger area, we’re changing our approach with a full cost rebalance across most T1-3 upgrades for exactly equal cost per point of merged beast power, instead leaving the nuance around understanding higher value merges & footprint advantage to depend more on discounts.

In going over our large list of price changes for Beast Handler’s lower tiers in 42 this change was received very positively, however we did not realize that in making this change we killed off all chance of dual-beast handlers being used as a round 1 starting option for under $650 in hard modes – So we gotta do that math all over again and convert it for difficulty, painful 😀 All T1 beast prices changed to allow 110 & 101 beast handler combos to be placed for under $650 in hard mode, all T2 & T3 prices shifted around to keep these same cost ratios. [...] Orca is very strong currently but Great White doesn’t do so much outside of max merge MOAB Takedowns, so damage is increasing to improve these non-maxed situations. [...] We’re slightly reducing beast reposition cooldown as the tiny range leaves movement very tight, which is especially painful for Microraptor path given the low range.

Base handler's beast range felt too high starting off when considering the tower is built around sharing range between multiple Handlers so this range is being reduced. Top Handler is designed around huge inconsistent power, however Megalodon feels that it should be more reliable for the investment required so we are improving both thrash radius and reducing the cooldown. Fish RBE limit before being able to devour the target instantly is being increased to last further into freeplay.
