Caltrops is a separate attack from the shuriken that adds additional DPS to the Ninja for a relatively low cost. It is usually not necessary if only the lower-tier Ninja (Tier 2 and below) is purchased for the early game, and is often skipped if the budget is tight, but can be used if building into a [[Double Shot (BTD6) (Ninja Monkey)|Double Shot]] or [[Bloonjitsu (BTD6)|Bloonjitsu]]. If upgrading to a [[Grandmaster Ninja (BTD6)|Grandmaster Ninja]] there is little reason to not purchase it because the attack still benefits from buffs such as [[Shinobi Tactics (BTD6)|Shinobi]] or [[Berserker Brew (BTD6)|Berserker Brew]]. For [[Shinobi Tactics (BTD6)|Shinobi Tactics]], Caltrops is capable of dealing plenty of damage to single-target when buffed with [[Permanent Brew (BTD6)|Permanent Brew]] and multiple 0-3-2, but without it then it's not so necessary for 0-3-1 Shinobis. That being said, some players skip Caltrops as a crosspath if lag is a concern with Shinobi spam.
