Caltrops (BTD6): Difference between revisions
Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) →Strategy: i prefer "lower-tier", and despite popular terminology I don't think "base" is unambiguous. One of the few times that Qwertyxp2000 terminology is better, I reckon. Also shinobi mention, it's gooood in freeplay with pbrew, or just with pbrew in general |

Caltrops is the Ninja Monkey's path 3 tier 2 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. It grants Ninja Monkey an additional attack, which places caltrops randomly onto any track in its range. Caltrops deal 1 damage, have 6 pierce, and cannot damage Lead Bloons. Caltrops have a lifespan of 35 seconds, and disappear when a round ends[fn 1].

Caltrops is a separate attack from the shuriken that adds additional DPS to the Ninja for a relatively low cost. It is usually not necessary if only the lower-tier Ninja (Tier 2 and below) is purchased for the early game, and is often skipped if the budget is tight, but can be used if building into a Double Shot or Bloonjitsu. If upgrading to a Grandmaster Ninja there is little reason to not purchase it because the attack still benefits from buffs such as Shinobi or Berserker Brew. For Shinobi Tactics, Caltrops is capable of dealing plenty of damage to single-target when buffed with Permanent Brew and multiple 0-3-2, but without it then it's not so necessary for 0-3-1 Shinobis.

- "Shuriken seeking targets too far away has been fixed" (bug fix)
- Caltrops no longer add to the damage count of other towers when the Ninja Monkey is sold (bug fix)
"[S]hould no longer be able to occasionally shoot with an infinite range in specific setups" (bug fix)
Caltrops: attack speed reduced by 50%
Caltrops: pierce increased by 3
- Note: Due to an oversight, Grandmaster Ninja's caltrop pierce is unchanged
| “ | As ninja is the ‘Camo Specialist’ and has been since inception, it is the only tower that will unlock Camo Prioritization on the base tower. — Update notes |

Camo Prioritization filter added
- 0-1-2, 0-2-2, 0-3-2, 0-4-2, 0-5-2
Caltrop attack: Gains 15% distraction chance (bug fix)
| “ | frequently unused caltrops clutter up the screen and cause extra lag we want to balance out their lifespan to reduce the number always on screen and make them no longer last longer than the base Spike Factory. — Update notes |

| “ | Ironing out Caltrop inconsistency & power a little on top and bottom T5s, but also as frequently unused caltrops clutter up the screen and cause extra lag we want to balance out their lifespan to reduce the number always on screen and make them no longer last longer than the base Spike Factory. — Update notes |

Caltrop: Lifespan reduced ― 70s → 35s
- 5-0-2
Caltrop: Pierce increased ― 5 → 6
| “ | We’re mindful that this has been in place since launch, but still think this change could lead to more balanced crosspath Ninja play for casual and for apex players. Ninja's 1xx feels like it does too much, granting both range and attack speed to all crosspaths, so these benefits are now being split apart. — Update notes |
” |
Range increased ― 40 units → 47 units
Ninja Discipline crosspath is unchanged
| “ | For an early game Distraction improvement the consistency of blowbacks is being averaged out more with increased minimum distance but reduced maximum, in many cases there would not actually be 250 units of track length in front of defenses to be blown back across anyway so the overall average distance is slightly lower. More at the mid to endgame we are also weakening distraction distance against Ceramics specifically as by this point Ninja have stacked so much speed and projectiles the consistency doesn’t matter anymore. Finally, distraction values for secondary projectiles are being modified, as Distraction chance as it has existed was never balanced around more than the main attack — Update notes |
” |
- 0-1-2, 0-2-2, 0-3-2, 0-4-2, 0-5-2
Caltrop: distraction chance reduced ― 15% → 10%
| “ | While a great early game option, Ninja generally struggles with dominant crosspathing choices and also has relatively poor base tower value. Without going into every single change, T3s onward remain relatively unchanged with a lot of prices below T3 being moved around from less favorable crosspaths into better/higher tier upgrades. — Update notes |
” |
Upgrade cost increased ― $400 → $450
Overall cost is unchanged (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
Caltrop attack: Attack cooldown reduced ― 4.4s → 3.9s (attack speed increased by 12.82%)
Main attack: Attack cooldown reduced ― 0.7s → 0.62s (attack speed increased by 12.9%)
- Note: Attack cooldown with Ninja Discipline is unchanged
- 1-0-2, 2-0-2, 3-0-2, 4-0-2, 5-0-2
Caltrop attack: Attack cooldown increased ― 2.728s → 2.73s (attack speed reduced by 0.07%)
- 0-2-2, 0-3-2, 0-4-2, 0-5-2
Counter-Espionage now grants Caltrops +2 damage to Camo Bloons (undocumented)
