Megalodon is the Beast Handler's path 1 tier 5 upgrade in Bloons TD 6. The Beast Handler now handles a megalodon instead of an orca. In order to upgrade to Megalodon, the Orca must have 3 additional merged Orcas. Its Beast Power is increased by +20, changing its Beast Power scale from 16–64 to 36–132, with the default being 84 with the three extra tier 4s.

The Megalodon now has shorter jump delay, from 1.1 seconds to 0.8 seconds, faster splash rate, and its thrash splash has more damage, radius, and knockback power. Additionally, Megalodon now drags MOAB-Class Bloons much faster, for RemainingHP5000 seconds. Megalodon can drag BADs, but the maximum dragging time is 30 seconds for BADs instead of 6 seconds.

Strategy

Megalodon has long been considered one of the worst upgrades in the game after its version 36.1 nerf, but has seen resurgence with recent buffs. Now, Power 132 Megalodon is extremely powerful, being able to take down a non-Fortified BAD on Round 200 on Logs even without insta-kills and buffs, the only non-Paragon tower other than True Sun God to do so. It also deals extraordinary damage to Boss Bloons, even considering its cost. However, its high cost and downtime, despite being reduced, still prevent it from being a viable tower for CHIMPS.

The high cost of Megalodon makes buffs, especially Overclock, highly valuable. When selling is enabled, the 3 additional Orcas required for purchasing Megalodon can be sold with Favored Trades and replaced with Great Whites, which are far more efficient for merging into a Power 132 Megalodon. In Freeplay, Power 132 Megalodon (via 6 extra Orcas) is worth it for its extreme damage (exceeding the raw damage of every Paragon and all towers except VTSG when max-buffed), despite high space occupancy.

  • Nerf Resolved an issue where thrash rate was occurring too frequently if the beast was unable to consume the target ― 0s → 0.3s (bug fix)
As our newest tower to be added to BTD6, we went over feedback for every path and made a large number of adjustments addressing a variety of points.
— Update notes
  • Buff Upgrade cost reduced ― $55,000 → $45,000
  • Buff Megalodon thrash radius increased ― 30 → 36
  • Buff Thrash rate benefits from speed buffs
  • Buff Top and Middle path Beast Handler paths can now be targeted by Overclock and Ultraboost
Compared to other T4 Beast Handlers and given the high cost of merging multiple beasts we agreed that the Orca & Megalodon’s total prices were too much more expensive for their somewhat random nature.
— Update notes
  • Buff Overall cost reduced by $3,500 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
Beast Handler’s general repositioning feels far too free right now, the reposition cooldown is being increased to a more reasonably noticeable number so this feels like a meaningful cost.
— Update notes
  • Nerf Beast: Reposition cooldown increased ― 0.5s → 5s
  • Buff Beast Handler reposition cooldown reduced ― 5s → 3s
Megalodon’s maximum time to drag MOABs to the depths was higher than at T4 given that it now has to account for grabbing BADs, we’ve now separated this out for a separate max time for BADs and reduced drag time for other MOABs to match the T4 again - along with much stronger & faster thrash knockbacks.
— Update notes
  • Nerf  Megalodon knockback lifespan reduced ― 0.4s → 0.3s
    • Note: For all degrees of beast power, knockback lifespan is reduced by 0.1s
  • Buff  Megalodon MOAB knockback amount increased ― 0.5 → 1.5
  • Buff  Megalodon maxMOABGrabTime for non-BADs ― 0s → 6s
    • Note: It was 30s max before this change
  • Megalodon maxMOABGrabTime for BADs unchanged (30s max)
  • Buff Overall cost reduced by $890 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  • Buff Overall cost reduced by $115 (due to cost changes for previous tiers)
  • Buff Beast: Reposition cooldown reduced ― 3s → 2s
  • Buff Water beasts: Now spawns within 20% of their range to the track
Base handler's beast range felt too high starting off when considering the tower is built around sharing range between multiple Handlers so this range is being reduced.

Top Handler is designed around huge inconsistent power, however Megalodon feels that it should be more reliable for the investment required so we are improving both thrash radius and reducing the cooldown. Fish RBE limit before being able to devour the target instantly is being increased to last further into freeplay.
— Update notes

  • Buff Drag-down RBE cap increased ― 250,000 → 500,000
  • Buff Thrash projectile size increased ― 36 → 48
  • Nerf Merging/Beast positioning range reduced ― 60 → 50
Megalodon's 'not 1 shotting' damage feels too low compared to when it is able to 1shot, so we’re increasing this damage.
— Update notes
  • Buff Thrash: Damage increased ― 350 → 700
  • Buff Damage gained from beast power increased ― 400 → 1400
    • Note: Max-power 5xx damage increased from 750 to 2100, mid-power 5xx damage increased from 550 to 1400
As a quality of life improvement, Beast Handler movement cooldowns have now been separated
— Update notes
  • Buff Fish & Dino beast reposition cooldowns are now independent
  • Buff Grab: Max RBE cap increased ― 500,000 → 1,000,000
[...] Megalodon is currently overperforming particularly against Bosses its attack rate is being lowered to match Orca.
— Update notes
Shark latch-on lifespan for targets that are not 1shot is being reduced so it has to let go and re-target more frequently as an overall range reduction [...]
— Update notes
  • Nerf Latch: Time that the beast keeps latched to targets that it can't drag down reduced ― 5s → 3s
    • Note: This decreases overall single-target damage and reduces concentration of damage around the target
  • Buff Can now move beasts onto ice and ink platforms. Beasts with only ice/ink platforms as valid placement will no longer randomly choose a location when attempting to place into ice/ink platforms. (undocumented)
  • Buff Merging/Beast positioning range increased ― 50 → 60
  • Buff Thrash attack: Maximum cooldown reduction by Beast Power increased ― 0.3439s → 0.38s
  • Nerf Thrash attack: Attack cooldown increased ― 0.8s → 1.1s
    • Note: With both attack speed changes combined, the changes are an overall nerf to attack cooldown of the thrash attack of the Megalodon ― 0.8s to 0.4561s (84/132: 0.62805s) → 1.1s to 0.72s (84/132: 0.91s) (depending on Beast Power)
  • Change Solved a bug where Beast Handlers which were crosspathed on a specific order could fail to respawn their fish when reloading a game from a save and and use a Support Chinook to redeploy the Beast Handler. (bug fix)
As it is still overperforming in event cases, Megalodon damage is being reduced.
— Update notes
  • Nerf Splash: Base damage decreased ― 700 → 600
  • Nerf Splash: Damage scale decreased ― 1,400 → 1,200
    • Note: With both changes damage for 132 (maximum) Beast Power decreased from 2,100 to 1,800, and damage for 84 (default) Beast Power decreased from 1,400 to 1,200
  • Neutral Thrash calculation is now calculated correctly (bug fix)
    • Buff Thrash calculation: divisor for "base attack cooldown" changed from the attack cooldown of the Piranha to Great White ― 0.6 → 1.1
    • Nerf Thrash calculation: dividend for "base thrash cooldown" increased while latching ― 0.3 → 0.6 (undocumented)
      • Note: Does not affect dragging
    • Nerf Thrash cooldowns across all beast power increased while latching
      • Min power: 0.55s → 0.6s
      • Middle power: 0.455s → 0.49636363636s
      • Max power: 0.36s → 0.39272727272s
    • Buff Thrash cooldowns across all beast power changed while dragging
      • Min power: 0.55s → 0.3s
      • Middle power: 0.455s → 0.248181818s
      • Max power: 0.36s → 0.196363636s
  • Nerf Thrash attack: Thrash interval increased while dragging into water ― 0.3s → 0.6s (bug fix)
